Curse is a move introduced in Generation II. It became a ghost-type move in Generation V. It was a ???-type move prior to that. It was also TM03 in Generation II.

Effect

In battle

Curse works differently for Ghost types than for other types. When Curse is used by a Ghost-type Pokémon, it will cause the user to lose half of its HP to afflict a curse on the target. This curse will cause the afflicted Pokémon to lose HP that is equal to 1/4 the number of points of their max HP at the end of every turn. However, when Curse is used by a Pokémon that isn't a Ghost type, it will lower the user's Speed by 1 stage but will raise the user's Attack and Defense by 1 stage each.

Trivia

• Curse was the only official move that is ??? type until Generation V.
• With the exception of Hidden Power, Curse is the only move that has its effect vary among users.
• The move Curse appears to be a pun based on its Japanese name. "Noroi" can be interpreted as either "curse" or "slow", explaining why it curses when used by Ghost-type Pokémon but lowers the Speed stat when used by non-Ghost-type Pokémon.
