Durant (Japanese: アイアント, Hepburn: Aianto) (dur-ANT) is a Bug/Steel-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

Biology

Physiology

Durant is a six-legged insect-like Pokémon that resembles an ant. Its body is made of shiny gray metal. It has sharp pincers on its mouth, long gray antennae, and six black legs. It has gleaming red eyes that are squinted, giving it an angry or determined appearance. Its thorax and abdomen are powerfully armored with a metal exoskeleton.

Behavior

Durant lives in large colonies similar to real-life ants. They are outfitted with metallic armor that helps protect them from Heatmor, one of their natural predators. Durant also has large mandibles that are used as weapons to help fight against Heatmor. Their eggs are the main food source for Sandaconda.

Evolution

Durant does not evolve.

Trivia

• Durant's Hidden Ability is Truant, which is ironic because in real life, ants are hard workers and almost never take breaks.
  • However, this may be a play on words as the word "truant" contains the word "ant" at the end.
• "Durant" is the surname of the NBA basketball player, Kevin Durant.

Origin

Durant is based on an ant, most likely an Army or Argentine Ant due to its jaw shape, with a metal exoskeleton. It may also be based on the Silver Spiny Ant due to its silver coloration. Its relationship with Heatmor is based on the predator and prey relationship of anteaters and ants. This is also reflected in their types in which Durant's Bug/Steel type is solely weak to the Fire type, the type that Heatmor is.

Etymology

Durant comes from durable and ant.

Its Japanese name, Aianto, comes from iron and ant.
