Zangoose (Japanese: ザングース, Hepburn: Zanguusu) (ZANG-goose) is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III. It's famous for its rivalry with Seviper.

Biology

Physiology

Zangoose is a large, bipedal catlike Pokémon that also possesses the traits of mongooses. It has intense pink eyes, a blunt, catlike muzzle with a small, triangular nose, and it is often scowling in a serious and fierce manner. Zangoose is covered in a thick coat of mostly white fur. It has red-tipped paws and jagged red patches of fur across the left side of its face, and across its round belly. Its short legs are covered in spiky white fur, and it has two sharp black claws on each of its paws, with pink paw pads. It has a particularly long, fluffy white tail.

Behavior

Zangoose are aggressive Pokémon that are known for their fierce rivalry with Seviper. If they sense Seviper near them, their fur will bristle and they will stand up, ready to attack. Their feud seems almost genetic, with even newborn Zangoose becoming aggressive when Seviper are nearby. The scars on their bodies are likely from duels with Seviper. They only bare their claws when attacking, leaving them withdrawn outside of battle. They are also shown to be very territorial and often travels in groups of 3.

Natural abilities

Due to their long-lasting feud with Seviper, Zangoose possess an immunity to poison, or even becomes more powerful when poisoned.

• Despite its name popularly being pronounced as "zayn-goose" the correct pronunciation is most like "zahn-goose," considering that the name is also used in the Japanese language, where the letter A is pronounced as "ah."

Origin

Zangoose is based on a mongoose. Its species name (the Cat Ferret Pokémon) implies it may also take inspiration from cats and ferrets. Zangoose and Seviper's rivalry might be based on the mongoose and cobra rivalry. That would also be why Zangoose is immune to poison just like a mongoose is immune to snake venom.

Etymology

Zangoose may come from 残痕, (zankon, Japanese for "scar"), 残酷 (zankoku, Japanese for "cruelty"), and mongoose.
