Bronzong (Japanese: ドータクン, Hepburn: Dootakun) (brawn-ZONG[1]) is a Steel/Psychic-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV and the evolved form of Bronzor.
Biology[]
Physiology[]
Bronzong is a large Pokémon resembling a blue-green bell with two arms coming out of its sides. It has a hollow body and a yoke attached at the top. Its face can be best described as being a "Totem Pole" design; Bronzong has two round, red eyes with blue-green irises and a rectangular mouth with one visible row of square teeth. It also has several darker, rectangular markings on its body.
Behavior[]
Bronzong can undergo long periods of dormancy. When in this state, their eyes turn white, they stop floating, and they become immobile. Scientists believe can remain like this essentially indefinitely, and therefore conclude that they had been “asleep” for about 2,000 years. When angered, Bronzong let out a warning cry that rings out like the tolling of a bell.
Additionally, historians believe that Bronzong were once revered as “bringers of plentiful harvests”. Ancient civilizations thought that by ringing their gong-like bells, Bronzong could open portals to other dimensions and summon rain clouds. People would leave out offerings and complete ritualistic dances in hopes of appeasing these Pokémon during poor weather.
Natural abilities[]
Like Bronzor, some Bronzong appear to demonstrate an odd resistance to fire.
They can summon rain clouds, which earned them the nickname "bringer of plentiful harvests" and led to some referring to them as deities.
Evolution[]
Bronzong evolves from Bronzor starting at level 33.

Trivia[]
- In its beta design, Bronzong had a darker shade of green and did not have a mouth.
- However, Bronzong is still listed as green according to the Pokédex.
Origin[]
Bronzong and its Stage 1 evolution are based on an old Japanese myth often translated as "Of a Mirror and a Bell". The tale tells of priests in Mugenyama wanting to create a large bell for their temple, so they encouraged women to donate their dōkyō (bronze mirrors) so that they could be welded into the bell. However, one women regretted donating her mirror, as her mirror would not melt until she took her own life. Before doing so, she stated that whoever could break the bell would be gifted with wealth. This led to multiple people ringing the bell, which prompted the priests to sending the bell away into a nearby swamp.
Bronzong is based on a dōtaku (銅鐸), a type of ritual bell from the Yayoi period. This is evidenced not only by Bronzong's physical appearance closely resembling a dōtaku, but by its Pokédex entries which describe it as an ancient "bringer of rain," mirroring the real-life dōtaku's use in agricultural rituals. In addition, Bronzong is said to have been "found buried in the ground" in many Pokédex entries. Likewise, dōtaku are frequently found buried.
Etymology[]
'Bronzong' likely comes from the words bronze, gong, and/or bianzhong (编钟), an ancient Chinese instrument made up of bronze bells. Bronzong's name in Japanese, ドータクン (dōtakun) comes from 銅鐸 (dōtaku), the type ancient bronze ritual bell that Bronzong is based on, and どんどん (don don), an onomatopoeic word for a drumming noise.
