Mareep (Japanese: メリープ, Hepburn: Meriipu) (mah-REEP) is an Electric-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

Biology

Physiology

Mareep appears to be a blue sheep with wool surrounding most of its body. It also possesses black and yellow stripes on its tail and its ears. Mareep also possesses an orange orb at the end of its tail.

Behavior

Mareep are a common sight on farms, raised for their soft, fluffy wool. Their wool is used to make various different articles of clothing like jackets and sweaters, though it must first be treated to reduce its static-generating properties. Their coats grows continuously, but are shed periodically every summer. If sheared, this wool can grow back within a week. Their fur stores pockets of air that insulate them, keeping Mareep warm during colder months are cool during hotter ones. As they wander about, their wool, which generates static very easily, rubs together and begins storing electricity. Their coats will double in size once fully charged. Because touching their wool in this state would lead to a nasty shock, it is necessary for ranch hands to don rubber gloves while shearing or otherwise handling flocks of Mareep. The small orbs at the end of their tails will glow more brightly depending on how much static electricity they have charged up in their wool. Experienced trainers and farm workers will know on sight whether or not a Mareep is safe to touch, depending on the intensity of its bulb.

Natural abilities

Mareep has the ability Static and the hidden ability Plus. Static gives the opponent a 30% chance of paralysis when they hit Mareep with a Physical attack. Plus powers up Mareep's Special Attack by 50% when a Pokémon with the ability Minus is in the battle.

Evolution

Mareep evolves into Flaaffy at level 15.

Multiple Mareep appear in Mild 'n Wooly and one is owned by a young trainer called Mary. A Mareep owned by Cadee and Dr. Anna appears in Hassle in the Castle and A Chip Off the Old Brock respectively. Two separate Mareep also appear in Pruning a Passel of Pals! and Sticking With Who You Know.

Trivia

• Mareep's coloration changes twice in Generation IV. However, the shiny coloration stays the same, staying a faint pink color.
• Mareep is one of the few Pokémon to have three different sprites in Generation II.
• Mary's Mareep briefly appears in the opening of all Johto Journey episodes, using an unknown move, with other Pokémon such as Ledian and Noctowl.
• Mareep was originally pink and named Pachimee, which is Japanese for "spark bleat".

Origin

Mareep appears to based off a sheep. It could also be a reference to the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick, the basis of the movie Blade Runner.

Its Shiny coloration may be based on the phrase 'one pink sheep'.

Etymology

Mareep could be a combination of Mary (the titular character in the children's' song Mary Had a Little Lamb), and sheep. Additionally, Mareep is also an anagram for ampere, the SI unit of electrical current.

• French: Wattouat, from watt and ouate, the word for a ball of wool, both of which are homophones.
• German: Voltilamm, a combination of volt and lamm (German for lamb).
• Chinese: Both of its Chinese names, Mēleihyèuhng and Miēlìyáng, are derived from the Chinese words for Mary, Sheep Bleating, and Sheep. Yèuhng and Yáng might bear a resemblance to yingyang.
