Chinchou (Japanese: チョンチー, HepburnChonchii) (CHIN-chow[1]) is a Water/Electric-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II. Chinchou evolves into Lanturn starting at level 27.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Chinchou resembles a small deep-sea fish with an oval-shaped body, two small fin-like arms, a pair of stubby legs, and two long antennas tipped with a yellow bulb-shaped sac. Chinchou also has two yellow eyes, each with a proton-shaped pupil.

Behavior[]

Chinchou can release negatively charged electricity from its antennas as means of hunting, self-defense, and communication. These Pokémon lives in schools of 20-30 individuals, though numerous groups numbering in the hundreds have been recorded during mating season. During this time, Chinchou head onto land en masse, where they perform intricate mating rituals involving the flashing and waving of their bulbs in patterns. People often come to see these spectacles, splashing Chinchou with water as they trek further inland to keep them hydrated. At the ends of these rituals, pairs of Chinchou head back into the water, lighting up the sea beautifully.

Anime[]

Goh Chinchou

Goh's Cinchou.

Several Chinchou played a very minor part in Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea. They helped destroy The Phantom's ship by overpowering and destroying his electrical equipment.

Trivia[]

  • The vowel sounds in Chinchou's English name are reverse of the vowels in its Japanese name.
  • Although Chinchou is shown to have the ability to walk on land in the anime, in the games, it can only be caught in water and it lacks a footprint.

Origin[]

Chinchou is based on an anglerfish. Its Japanese name seems to imply to is specifically based on a footballfish.

Etymology[]

Chinchou's Japanese name is a play on chōchin (提灯), which means lantern. Its English name is a reverse play on its Japanese name. It may also come from chōchin-ankō, the Japanese name for the footballfish, a type of deep-sea anglerfish.
