Marill (マリル, Mariru?) (MARE-rull[1]) is a Water/Fairy-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II. Prior to Generation VI, it was a pure Water Pokémon.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Marill is a small blue mouse-like Pokémon. It has a round body with a white belly, round ears and small limbs. Its tail is black and bends in a zigzag pattern, and it has a blue ball at its end.

Behavior[]

A Marill uses its tail to ensure it doesn't drown during its swim, as well as avoid getting washed away by strong currents by wrapping itself around a tree.

Marill can be found swimming in various bodies of fresh water as well as frolicking on lake shores and riversides. Their spherical tails, which contained nutrition as Azurill, now contain an oil that is less dense than water. They act as buoys when Marill swim, helping them stay afloat even in the roughest currents. The amount of oil in their tails can be regulated to allow the Pokémon to swim at varying depths.

Marill eat both underwater plants and occasionally fish for food. When fishing, these Pokémon will wrap their tails tightly around nearby trees and leap into the rushing rapids of rivers. After nabbing fish, Marill will pull themselves back onto land with their springy tails. Their ears are highly developed and can pick up minute sounds both above and below the the surface of the water.

Natural abilities[]

Marill's tail is extendable and contains oil that allows it to float. They are strong swimmer, although they are smaller than other Pokémon like Poliwrath.

Evolution[]

Marill evolves from Azurill if leveled up with high friendship and evolves into Azumarill starting at level 18.

    Trivia[]

    Buru pikablu

    Marill's original name: Pikablu

    • Marill was originally believed to be named Pikablu, it was even referred to as this in the Topps trading cards for the First movie. Other promotion for the first movie misspells its name as Marrill.
    • In its earlier design, Marill was originally supposed to be colored purple.
    • The anime shows it can bounce on its tail, though the concept was reworked into Azurill instead.
    • Along with Togepi and its pre evolved form, it has the lowest base Attack stats of all fairy types, and it and the latter have the lowest base special Attack of all fairy types.
    • In all pre Gen 6 games, a female Azurill may evolve into a male Marill due to the different gender ratios.
    • In Super Smash Bros., Marill is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. During this time, it uses the move Tackle.
      • It reappears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but as a collectible Spirit instead of a Poké Ball Pokémon.
    Marill early design

    Marill's early design.

    • In the early Gold & Silver 1997 demo, Marill was designed to be a pink Water-type Pokémon without its evolution Azumarill.

    Origin[]

Marill is a mix between a mouse and a beach ball. Its tail might be inspired by spherical lifesaving floats or buoys. Its ears are akin to the shape of water molecules. It may also be based on water rats, which are rodents that live near the riverside.

    Etymology[]

Marill and its Japanese name Maril may be named after "maru" (which means round in Japanese) or "mari" (ball in Japanese) and "ruri" (lapis lazuli in Japanese), as well as "rill", which means a small stream. It may also been named after the color marine blue.
