I am Winona. I am the Leader of the Fortree Pokémon Gym. I have become one with bird Pokémon and have soared the skies... However grueling the battle, we will triumph with grace... Witness the elegant choreography of my bird Pokémon and me!

Winona is the Gym Leader of Fortree City in the Hoenn region. She uses Flying-type Pokémon in her gym. She awards the trainers the Feather Badge when they defeat her.

Appearance[]

Winona is a woman of medium height and slender. She has long, lavender hair tied in a thin ponytail with a white band, and violet eyes. Her hair sticks up at the side in two tufts, representing feathers. Winona is usually seen in her collared flight suit, with a gray helmet, and a pair of gray shoes.

Generation III[]

She wears a gray flying-suit with yellow outlines on her thighs, with white sleeves, which have gray bands around her biceps. She wears a pair of gray gloves and some white trousers.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire[]

Concept artwork of Winona for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

She wears a gray flying-suit, a pair of white gloves and trousers, with small decorations resembling wings, and a pair of gray shoes. Winona's back of her flying suit is shaped like a pair of wings.

Personality[]

Winona has a kind and caring personality, especially of those dear to her, and believes the best lifestyle is to coexist with nature. She is a woman of grace, and although specializes in Flying types, prefers bird Pokémon. She is focused on the refinement in battles and respects Trainers who are both graceful and strong. Sometimes, she speaks in a discontinuous way, owing to contemplating her own choice of words. Winona has the ability to read the wind's directions.

Etymology[]

The name Winona comes from "wing" and/or "wind".

Her Japanese name, Nagi, could literally be 凪 (nagi, a lull in winds). Following the plant-based naming of most Gym Leaders, it could also come from "Nageia Nagi", the scientific name of the Asian bayberry.

Biography[]

Games[]

Generation III[]

Winona is the sixth Gym Leader fought by the player. She uses the same team of Pokémon as in the anime (Swellow, Pelipper, Skarmory and Altaria) In Pokémon Emerald Version Winona's team changes slightly during the rematches. She includes a Tropius, Hoothoot and its evolved form, and Dratini and its evolved forms. When defeated, Winona will reward the player with both the Feather Badge and TM40 (Aerial Ace).

All of Winona's Pokémon are female, but in subsequent rematches in Pokémon Emerald Version, Winona uses only male Pokémon.

In the games, Winona owns an Altaria that has a few abnormalities, such as being level 33, even though its pre-evolved form, Swablu, cannot evolve to Altaria until at least level 35. It can also use Dragon Pulse, which any other Altaria cannot learn until reaching level 40.

Pokémon Black Version 2 and Pokémon White Version 2[]

Winona is an opponent in multiple tournaments of the Pokémon World Tournament, including Hoenn Leaders Tournament, Type Expert Tournament (grouped with Flying-type experts), and World Leaders Tournament. Winona's signature Pokémon is her Altaria, which she always uses in every battle.

In Japanese and Korean releases only, Winona is an opponent in the The Battle Between Legendary Pokémon tournament. She is the only Hoenn Gym Leader of that tournament, and the Legendary Pokémon in her party is a level 50 Rayquaza.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire[]

Winona has the same main role as before. Additionally, after the player defeats the Elite Four, Winona can only be seen on one of the transmission towers in Mauville City. Though the player cannot talk to Winona when this occurs, they can hear from an old lady, who questions Winona's recklessness.

Trivia[]

  • In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Winona's Ace Pokémon, Altaria, lacks any kind of STAB Flying-type moves in exchange for Roost.
    • As of now, Winona is the first and (so far) only Gym Leader to have the main Ace Pokémon that loses a STAB moves for their type specialty in a remake.
