Volo is a character appearing in and the main antagonist of Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

Despite seemingly being an unsuspecting merchant from the Ginkgo Guild, it is later revealed that he is a direct descendant of a group of prestigious ancient Hisuian people called the Celestica and also the main culprit who caused the rampage of Dialga/Palkia, causing the sudden space-time rifts while attempting to summon Giratina and use it as a pawn in order to force Arceus out of hiding.

Appearance[]

Volo Concept Art

Concept artwork of Volo.

Volo is a slender man with a striking resemblance to Cynthia. He has short light blonde hair that covers his left eye, and his eyes are gray. He usually sports his Ginkgo Guild uniform (a dark-blue full body suit with a fluffy, yellow collar, alongside an apron with the Ginko Guild's logo printed on it) and bulky backpack.

After revealing his true colors, Volo wears an outfit similar to Arceus, including a white toga with yellow-ish gold outlines around his shoulder, green pants, golden sandals, and a necklace similar to Cynthia’s brooch. Volo also has some sort of golden star on each side. His hair resembles the mane and horns Arceus has.

Personality[]

Volo has a boundless sense of curiosity and is always interested in unusual findings and people. He also has a tendency to pop up unexpectedly.

However, it would later be revealed that underneath his friendliness, he is a delusional and ambitious megalomanic who is extremely obsessed with Arceus. His desire to meet the deity is so great, that he won't hesitate to defy the forces of the universe by gathering the plates to create a new and "better" world on his own. Even after losing to the player, he refuses to accept or respect the order of the universe, displaying his extreme delusion as well.

Volo also admitted he was willing to use physical force on the player force to take the plates from them should the player not wish to fight him.

Despite his negative traits, it is implied that he does care for his own Pokémon as shown with pictures of him and his Togepi at the photography studio, as well as the fact that his Togepi eventually evolves in Togekiss with Togepi's first evolution in Togetic being only possible if Togepi has high friendship with their trainer.

Etymology[]

The name Volo is derived from the Latin vocabulary volō, which translates to 'I wish'. This reflects on his insatiable desire to capture Arceus and remake the entire world with its power.

Being consistent with the plant based themed names, he also appears to be named after the plant volot'.

Biography[]

Volo is a character that the player encounters several times. He first appears at Jubilife Village to challenge the player into a battle. If the player defeats him during their first battle with him, he will reward the player with five Potions.

He then appears multiple times throughout the game to assist the player, and checking their progress on collecting Arceus's Plates, like the ones from Wyrdeer and Kleavor. He will teach the player how to use Back Strikes in order to capture and battle Pokémon in the wild.

However, Volo's ulterior motives begin to surface when he is interacting with his acquaintance Cogita, who questions his purpose of helping the player during the player's exile from Jubilife Village by taking the player to the Ancient Retreat. This suspicion is further raised when he follows the player to Lake Verity, Lake Valor and Lake Acuity for assembling components of the Red Chain, and later the Temple of Sinnoh. He also lets the player purchase from him during their exile.

Eventually, Volo becomes more suspicious as a person when he tasks the player to find all of Arceus's remaining Plates. However, after the player completes this task, Volo discards his uniform to replace it with his more religious garb, then reveals his true colors of being an ambitious megalomaniac, who's always been deeply jealous of the player's privilege of being able to meet Arceus. He even reveals himself to be the culprit behind all of the space-time rifts, just to see and subjugate Arceus for himself so he can recreate the world to his image. In fact, he is the true reason of why the player was displaced in Hisui in the first place, and he already has the Spooky Plate. He then challenges the player to a battle after the player refuses to hand over the rest of the Plates, and then summons Giratina to battle against the player.

After Giratina has been defeated twice and leaves him, Volo is infuriated. After throwing a fit on why Arceus chose the player instead of him, he surrenders the Spooky Plate to the player. To his surprise, the player's Celestica Flute is transformed into the Azure Flute, which causes him to throw a tantrum again. He soon takes his departure after declaring to the player that he will spend the rest of his life to learn about Arceus' mythologies and conquer Arceus by travelling around the lands of Hisui, no matter how many centuries it'll take him.

According to Cogita, Volo is disinterested in being a merchant at the Ginkgo Guild, as he would rather pester her on learning more about lore and myths from the ancient past to neglect his job. Professor Laventon later tells the player that Volo encouraged him to finish the Pokédex research before Volo himself left, implying that Volo won't be seen again in a long time.

Trivia[]

  • Volo is a significantly difficult character to battle against, due to him owning Pokémon with moves that can effectively counter the ones the player has on their field, and that he can summon Giratina that is able to carry on the battle with its Origin Forme without giving the player any chances to heal their Pokémon.
  • He is the first villainous character in the games to not be affiliated with any villainous organizations.
  • His battle theme against the player is a remix of Cynthia's version.
  • He is canonically 190cm (around 6'3) tall.
