There are certain Pokémon that only appear in one version in a set of games.

Background[]

In each pair or trio of main series games, these Pokémon are available in some but not all of the games in the set. For example, a user of Pokémon Diamond cannot obtain Glameow or Purugly without trading with a user of Pokémon Pearl. A Pokémon may be version exclusive in some sets of games, but not others; for instance, the Sandshrew line is a version exclusive in Red/Blue because it can be found in Blue but not Red, but it is not a version exclusive in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald because it can be found in all three games.
