The Unova Starter Pokémon can be picked out of three Pokémon that cannot be found in the Unova Region. The Pokémon in question are:
- Snivy, the Grass type which evolves into Servine, then to Serperior.
- Tepig, the Fire type which evolves into Pignite which grants it the additional type of Fighting, then to Emboar.
- Oshawott, the Water type which evolves into Dewott, then to Samurott.

Games[]
Pokémon Black, White, Black Version 2 and White Version 2[]
In Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version, Professor Juniper brings the Pokémon to the player's house, after which Cheren and Bianca come and pick up their First partner Pokémon along with the player. Cheren will pick up a Pokémon that is strong against the player's Pokémon, while Bianca picks up the Pokémon that is weak against it.
In Pokémon Black Version 2 and Pokémon White Version 2, Bianca is coming to the starting town Aspertia City to give the player his/her new First partner Pokémon. Unfortunately the player's rival Hugh doesn't get a new First partner Pokémon but will battle you with the Pokémon that he got since it was an egg. He has a Pokémon that is stronger than your First partner Pokémon.
Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire[]
In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, after the Delta Episode is completed, Professor Birch can be found being chased by a Machoke on Route 101 and the player will be allowed to choose one of the Unova starters.
Pokémon Sun and Moon[]
In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, the Unova starters' final forms can be caught in the wild via Island Scan on Poni Island.

Like in the Black, White, and the second version of the games, beginning Trainers who originated in Unova can receive one of the first partner Pokémon in Snivy, Tepig and Oshawott from Professor Juniper. However, there have been exceptions of receiving one of them from a school.
Main[]
- Ash reused his pattern like he did for Kanto and Johto of catching all the First partner Pokémon in Unova, Oshawott, Tepig, and Snivy. However, this time around, he caught them in reverse of the Pokédex order rather than following it as he did with his Kanto and Johto starters, and Oshawott was in fact a First partner Pokémon that Professor Juniper allowed Ash to have after he ran away to be with him. However, like the Kanto starters, one out of the three evolved, as Tepig was the only one in the group to evolve by becoming a Pignite.

- Trip received Snivy from Professor Juniper as he evolved into Servine then into Serperior.
- Bianca started with Tepig as he evolved into Pignite then into Emboar.
- Burgundy started with Oshawott, but it has since evolved into Dewott.

Manga[]
In the Pokémon Adventures manga, both Professor Juniper and her father, Cedric, gave away first partner Pokémon. One night, however, N broke into Cedric's lab and caused trouble, scattering the Pokémon: Oshawott was found by Cedric, Snivy joined Team Plasma and Tepig was discovered by an advertising company, turned into a film star. Years later, the postman delivered a package to Black, who, after a bit of trouble, obtained Tepig, whereas Snivy and Oshawott joined Cheren and Bianca - Black's friends. Black was later joined by White, who held onto Tepig Gigi. N, who let the Pokémon loose, convinced Gigi that it was better off battling, and Gigi joined N, causing White to fall into despair, as N's Servine joined her side.
In later years, Blake obtained a Dewott as a policeman. Whitley, her colleage in Pokémon School, obtained Gigi from White. Their reckless rival, Benga, got a Pignite. Finally, Hugh discovered a Snivy aboard the Plasma Frigate with the "liberated" Pokémon.
Trivia[]
- The Unova Starters also gain signature attacks unique to them: Snivy gained Leaf Tornado, Tepig gained Heat Crash, and Oshawott gained Razor Shell. Leaf Tornado, Heat Crash, and Razor Shell were given to other Pokémon in later generations.
- Oshawott is the only Unova Starter that is one of the Hisui first partner Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
