Torterra (Japanese: ドダイトス, HepburnDodaitosu) (tor-TERR-uh[1]) is a Grass/Ground-type Pokémon. It evolves from Grotle at level 32, and is the final evolution of Turtwig.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Ash's Torterra

Ash's Torterra about to use an attack

Torterra is a large Pokémon that resembles a cross between an ankylosaur and a tortoise. It has a dark-green shell on its back with a white rim and diamond shape, along with a large tree on top. Three spiked rocks also line its back, and part of its shell appears to be covered in dirt. Torterra's body is mostly dark-green above the midsection, but underneath, its body is brown. To keep its balance and support its weight, it has a short, pointed tail and muscular legs tipped with rock-like nails. Torterra also has two silver spikes on both sides of its head, red eyes, and a black, kite-shaped beak.

Behavior[]

In the wild, Torterra dwell in natural areas with greenery. They usually migrate in search of clean water, which makes them being mistaken for "moving forests". Many Pokémon tend to reside on Torterra's backs and spend their entire lives there, which Torterra don't mind.Torterra do not move around often, gathering most of their energy from photosynthesis via the trees and other plant life on their backs. Though typically docile, Torterra can retaliate powerfully when they or the inhabitants of their shells are threatened by using the devastating Wood Hammer. Thanks to their curious combination of peaceful demeanors and tremendous offensive and defensive capabilities in battle, Torterra have been and likely will remain reliable partners for Sinnohan trainers for years to come.

As seen with Ash's Torterra, it can be serious and always listens to its trainer. One also lets some other Pokémon live on its back.

In the Pokémon adventures manga, Dia owns a Torterra.

Trivia[]

  • Groudon and Torterra share the same species, both are classified as "Continent Pokémon".
  • Torterra is the heaviest fully-evolved Starter Pokémon.
  • Torterra has the highest Attack stat of all fully-evolved Grass-type Starter Pokémon.
  • Torterra has the lowest base Speed stat among all fully-evolved Starter Pokémon.
  • Torterra is the first (and, prior to Toedscool and Toedscruel's introduction in Generation IX, only) Pokémon to be both Grass and Ground-type.

Origin[]

Torterra is based on a tortoise and a biosphere. It also incorporates features of Ankylosaurs as well as myths of the World Turtle, a turtle from Hindu and Chinese mythology that supported the Earth on its back. It may also be a play on the Asian leaf turtle species. It may also be based on the World Turtle of Hindu and Chinese mythology. Torterra could be based on Yggdrasil, the World Tree in Norse Mythology

Etymology[]

Torterra comes from tortoise and terra ("earth" in Latin). It may also incorporate tuatara, a reptilian whose name means "peaks on the back" in the Māori language.
