The Great Glacier is a location in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. It is a large mountain of ice in the far north. Legends say that a great crystal lies inside with the power to make objects float, but this is later revealed to be the Bittercold.

Story[]

The Player first sees the Glacier the day after Victini and the V-Wheel appear from the top of Post-Town. Virizion explains what the Great Glacier is and that due to the impassable crevices and freezing wind surrounding it, is unable to be access or explored.

After Umbreon and Espeon are rescued from their pursuers, they reveal they were being chased for their Entercards, which are capable of opening a Magnagate that leads past the crevices surrounding the Glacier. They invite the Player's team to join them in exploring the Glacier and join the Player's team. However, Quagsire reveals that one member will have to stay behind due to HAPPI regulations and Virizion offers to stay behind. When the Player and Partner tell Umbreon and Espeon about Virizion's decision, but the latter object and reveal the reason Virizion is so cold to others is because of a letter from her friend Keldeo, who went to try and explore the Glacier, that stated Keldeo lied about going to the Glacier just to get away from Virizion and cut off their friendship. When Virizion met Umbreon and Espeon and learned about their plans to travel to the Great Glacier, she asked to go along in hopes of finding Keldeo, a hope she still has. The revelation makes the Player and Partner unsure about accepting Virizion's decision to stay behind and the team ultimately decides to draw straws to give everyone a fair chance to go. Dunsparce ends up drawing the short straw and is reluctantly chosen to stay behind. The next day, when the Magnagate is created and everyone prepares to depart to the Glacier, Emolga, knowing how much going to the Great Glacier means to Dunsparce, switches places with him at the last minute and the group is sent through the Magnagate.

After passing through the dungeon created by the Magnagate, the group exits on the other side of the crevice's surrounding the Glacier and move on to reach the Glacier itself. After traveling for a bit, the group is stopped by another crevice, but the Player discovers a mark in the ice that was created by a Magnagate. Though no one knows who created the Magnagate, Umbreon and Espeon discover they can also create a Magnagate that leads straight into the Glacier. After passing through the new Magnagate dungeon, the group exits inside the Great Glacier. They discover the glacier is actually a dome covering a large palace made of ice and go to explore it. During the journey to the palace, the group finds an area with several floating pieces as well as special crystals called Frisms that store and record message. Virizion finds a Frism with a message from Keldeo left behind for other explores to find, something that contradicts what Keldeo said in his letter. Hoping to find answers about Keldeo, the group keeps moving forward, but are ambushed by a Golurk and two Cryogonal. After defeating them, the group keeps going, but eventually everyone except the Player mysteriously pass out from being unable to breath and are whisked away by the arrival of a Kyurem. When everyone awakens, Kyurem introduces himself as the master of the glacier, explains that not even he can enter the place the group was heading to, and that he used his ability to see the future to save the group. After Kyurem confirms that the Great Crystal does indeed exist and that he did not know of Keldeo, as he apparently didn't make it as far as the group did, he leaves the group a chest of treasure for a reward and tells them to return home.

When the Player gets tricked by Munna and is rescued by Hydreigon, the latter reveals the existence of the Bittercold and that it is in fact the Great Crystal inside the Great Glacier. After the Player and Partner return to Paradise, the explain the situation to the other team members and together, they come up with a plan to use the Entercards to return the Great Glacier and destroy it while Dunsparce stays behind to try and rally the Pokémon of Post Town. However, they discover the Glacier Palace inside the Great Glacer has been lifted into the sky. Umbreon and Espeon create an alternative plan to use the Entercards to reach into the sky where the Glacier Palace is. After meeting up at the crevices and defeating Salamence from Munna's gang, the team uses the Entercards to infiltrate the floating Glacier Palace and up to avoid drawing the attention of Munna and her gang. Virizon and Emolga get ambushed by Purugly and several henchmen, but defeat them with the help of the Player and Partner. Meanwhile, Umbreon and Espeon discover Keldeo being held captive in a tower and discover he was the maker of the previous Entercards, including the same ones that allowed them to reach the floating Glacier Palace. The rest of the team are attacked by Munna, Toxicroak, and more minions, but they manage to defeat them. When Munna and her gang refuse to give up, Umbreon and Espeon arrive with Keldeo, the latter whom reveals he let himself be captured to try and turn Munna's gang away from letting the world be destroyed. Munnna and the Partner have a heartfelt conversatino about the world, but it is interrupted when the Glacier Palace begins to fall apart from the Bittercold's power. A column falls down that almost crushes the Player and Partner, but Munna, having a change of heart, pushes them out of the way. The column's impact creates a crevice that separates the Player and Partner from the rest of their team, forcing them to continue alone. The pair soon find the entrance to the Bittercold's chamber, but are confront by Kyurem, who wishes to protect the future of destruction. The two manage to defeat Kyurem, who admits he wishes to see if they can actually change the future, and travel into the Bittercold's chamber. However, the Bittercold's power causes the Partner to collapse and even affect the Player. Suddenly, the Player begins to hear the voices of the Pokémon of Post Town, the Team, and even Munna's gang, encouraging them to keep going to save the world. At first the Player is unable to damage the Bittercold, but manages to break open it's front with an all-out attack. The damage to the Bittercold causes it's power to waver and reveal the lost rainbows of hope again, which are witness by the Pokémon in Post-Town. The return of the rainbows gives the Pokémon hope and courage to keep believing in the Player. The Player hears their hopes battles the Bittercold again and with its weak point exposed, finally destroys it. With the Bittercold's destroyed, the rainbows of hope fully return even brighter than before they disappeared. Without the Bittercold, the Glacier Palace begins to crumble and fall apart as it crashes to the ground. Kyurem, grateful to the Player and Partner for showing him the future can be changed and there is still hope for the world, rescues those aboard the Glacier Palace when it was destroyed.
