The Future is an alternate timeline in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky. It is a dark future where the planet has become completely paralyzed and motionless. In the paralyzed world, the sun doesn't shine, water doesn't flow, nor does the wind, nature itself has completely stopped, leaving the world a dark ruinous shell.
Origins[]
At some point in the past, Darkrai sabotaged Temporal Tower, a tower that gives structure to all of time, causing it's eventual collapse, and with it the collapse of time. With the collapse of Time, Dialga, the Pokémon embodying time, went mad and reverted to a primitive state where his only thoughts were of self preservation. The only beings seemingly unaffected by the planet's paralysis were Pokémon, though the dark conditions of the world brought out the darkest sides of many Pokémon. Even Pokémon that are normally timid became aggressive under the dark conditions.
Changing the Future[]
Unable to bear living in such a bleak and hopeless existence, a group consisting of Grovyle, Celebi, and a human began searching for a way to end the nightmarish future. They eventually learned of Temporal Tower's collapse and that inserting five Time Gears could prevent it. Armed with this knowledge, Grovyle and human search for the locations of the Time Gears using the human's Dimension Scream ability to discover the secrets surrounding their locations. After learning all the locations of the Time Gears, the two made their way to the past via the Passage of Time, a portal that spans across all time. However, Darkrai, unwilling to let the dark future be undone, attacked the two in the middle of the trek through time. The result caused the human to be separated from Grovyle, be turned into a Pokémon, and lose their memories. The Player ended up on the beach near Treasure town while Grovlye was sent to Eastern Forest and began the search for the Time Gears.
The search for Time Gears[]
Grovyle begins his search the Time Gears finding the first one in Treeshroud Forest and the second in Limestone Cavern. Primal Dialga, seeking to keep history from being altered which would lead to all Pokémon from the future disappearing, sends his agent, Dusknoir, to the past to stop Grovyle. Dusknoir uses his knowledge of the future to become a famous and respected explore in order to disguise his agenda while he searches for Grovyle. Grovyle then steals a Time Gear from Uxie then Mesprit, despite the interference of the Player. Grovyle's continued thefts attract the attention of Wigglytuff's guild who, unaware of his true goals, are tricked by Dusknoir into going after Grovyle. Grovyle reaches his last target, the Time Gear of Crystal Lake, but it's guardian, Azelf, activates a security measure, sealing the lake with a barrier of crystals. Before Grovyle can defeat Azelf to undo the security measure, the Player and Partner arrive and battle him. Grovyle proves too strong to beat, but Dusknoir arrives and Grovyle flees empty handed. Dusknoir and the lake trio later come up with a plan to spread a rumor that the lake trio will seal the Time Gear to permanently prevent it's theft. This rumor will bait Grovyle into going after the Time Gear before it's too late and spring a trap. The plan works and Grovyle is captured. Dusknoir has Grovyle bound, gagged, and brought to a Dimensional Hole in Treasure Town's main square. Grovyle is sent back to the future and Dusknoir takes the Player and Partner with him in a surprise kidnapping.
Escape from the the future[]
The Player, Partner, and Grovyle are all eventually brought to the stockades to be executed, but they escape thanks to a collaborated plan. The three escape the stockades, but the Groyvle goes off on his own due the Partner being unwilling to trust him. The Player and Partner keep fleeing from the Sableye and eventually decide to seek out Grovyle to determine the truth behind the dark future. After rescuing Grovyle from a Spiritomb that became aggressive because of the dark conditions of the world, the two learn the reasons behind the planet's paralysis. The three reluctantly join forces to find Celebi in order to return to the present. After finding Celebi and escaping a trap by Dusknoir and Primal Dialga, where the Player's true identity and history are revealed by Dusknoir, the Player, Partner, and Grovyle return to the present while Celebi escapes capture.
The search for the Hidden Land[]
After returning the present, the Player, Partner, and Grovyle take action to prevent the collapse of Temporal Tower. First, they recover a Time Gear from Treeshroud Forest. Afterward, Grovyle reveals that Temporal Tower is located in an unknown location called the Hidden Land. The group splits up, Grovyle leaves to resume collecting Time Gears, while the Player and Partner return to the guild to seek their help in finding the Hidden Land. An elderly Torkoal is revealed to have knowledge of the Hidden Land. In order to get to the Hidden Land, which is across the sea, proof is needed to gain entry and that proof happens to be the Partner's Relic Fragment. Wigglytuff reveals he and Chatot have seen the pattern before in Brine Cave, and the guild mounts an expedition to search the cave.
Lapras[]
After recovering the Relic Fragment after it was stolen by Team Skull, the Player and Partner defeat a Kabutops and a pair of Omastar that ambushed them and Chatot. Chatot is taken back to the guild to be healed after shielding the Player and Partner from Kabutops' gang's surprise attack, and the two are joined by Grovyle. The three visit the pattern at the end of the cave, which reacts the Relic Fragment and summons Lapras, the guide to the Hidden Land. The groups hops upon Lapras and leave for the Hidden Land.
The Hidden Land[]
Lapras takes the three through the gap in time that hides the Hidden Land and crosses the "sea of time" up to the hidden land. Lapras explains the only way to access Temporal Tower is with the Rainbow Stoneship, which lies within the Old Ruin. The three cross the Hidden Land and reach the Old Ruin, where they discover a monument that reveals the key to accessing the Rainbow Stoneship is the Relic Fragment. However, before they can insert the Relic Fragment, Dusknoir and his Sableye minions ambush them and a try to take them back to the future through another Dimensional Hole. After a grueling battle, Dusknoir is defeated and the Sableye flee. As the Partner activates the Rainbow Stoneship, Dusknoir reveals that by changing history, all the Pokémon from the future, including the Player and Grovyle, will disappear from existence. Dusknoir then tries to attack the Player again, but Grovyle stops him and begins pushing him into the Dimension Hole. After leaving the Time Gears he's collected and entrusting the future to the Player and Partner, Grovyle takes Dusknoir back to the future and the Dimension Hole closes. The Player and Partner collect the Time Gears and head to the Rainbow Stoneship, while the Partner is unaware of what will happen when history is changed and the Player contemplates what will happen to them.
Temporal Tower[]
The Player and Partner reach the Rainbow Stoneship and ride it to Temporal Tower. As they climb the tower, they feel tremors that indicate the tower is nearing collapse. When the two reach the top of the tower, they discover a red vortex of clouds blasting lightning on the tower and a monument where the Time Gears are to be inserted. However, the Primal Dialga of the present attacks them, falsely believing them to be the cause of the tower's deterioration, though this Primal Dialga has not fully lost his sanity yet. After Primal Dialga is defeated, the Partner inserts the Time Gears into the monument where they merge with it. Just as the tower is about to complexly collapse, the Time Gears stop it and save the tower in nick of time. Thought Temporal Tower and the Hidden Land were ravaged by the event, they survived, and time across the world returns to normal. Dialga declares he will see to the tower's restoration and the two leave to return home. Before they reach the Rainbow Stoneship, the Player begins to disappear and the Partner learns of what will happen. After giving some last goodbyes, the Player disappears and the Partner returns to the guild, heartbroken at the lost of their friend. Months pass and the world begins to heal from the crisis, and the Partner tells the tale of what happen to all who would hear to prevent such a disaster from ever happening again. Though time passes, the Partner's sorrow for the loss of the Player remains and Dialga, who sees that the bond between the two still so strong after all that time and knowing that the world needs them, restores the Player's existence.
In the Future of Darkness[]
When Grovyle and Dusknoir return to the future, Grovyle awakens injured along with Dusknoir. Grovyle learns Dusknoir doesn't want history to change because it would mean he would disappear. Grovyle reveals that most of the Pokémon in the future are willing to make the sacrifice of disappearing to change the dark future they live in. Knowing that Primal Dialga will try and stop history from changing again, Grovyle decides to travel to the Temporal Tower of the future and battle with Primal Dialga to buy time for the Player and Partner to change history. When Dusknoir catches up with Grovyle, they are both attacked by the Sableye and have to work together to fend them off. The two enemies are forced to call a truce in order to find out what is going on and together, they discover a new henchman has replaced Dusknoir and Primal Dialga ordered his elimination. The two travel to Temporal Tower to find Primal Dialga, only to discover he is gone. Dusknoir determines that Primal Dialga has gone after Celebi to use the Passage of Time to send his new henchman to the past. Dusknoir and Grovyle travel to Dusk Forest, only to fall into a trap set by the new henchman and are ambushed by the Sableye. After defeating the Sableye, the two learn from one of them that Celebi fled to Frozen Island. The two travel across the Spacial Cliffs to meet with Porygon who transport that to Frozen Island.
Frozen Island[]
Upon arriving at the island, the two travel across Dark Ice Mountain to find Celebi. During their search, they are attack by a pack of Glalie and a Mamoswine, who use their power over ice to drop a floating piece of ice on Grovyle. Dusknoir shields Grovyle from the ice and the two defeat the Ice Pokémon. The two take shelter for Dusknoir to recover from the ice and have a conversations where Grovyle explains that he fights to change the future because, even though it means disappearing, his accomplishments and spirit will live on forever. After Dusknoir recovers, the two go to Icicle Forest where they learn from a local Snorunt that Celebi has been captured by the Sableye and taken deeper into the forest. The two reach the end of the forest where Celebi is being held by Spiritomb. Grovyle tries to rescue Celebi, only to get caught in the electricity of the ice pillars. It is revealed this was Dusknoir's plan to have the electricity melt away Grovyle's spirit so he can inhabit his body and return to the past in order to gain the Player and Partner's trust and stop them from changing history, making Grovyle into the new henchman. However, Grovyle reveals that during their travels together, he sensed Dusknoir's darkened heart had changed and asks him what he really wants. This causes Dusknoir to doubt himself, enter a state of confusion, and ultimately save Grovyle.
The Final Fight for the Future[]
Primal Dialga, furious that Dusknoir abandoned the plan, arrives and brutally attacks Dusknoir. Before the fight can escalate, an aurora lights up the sky and the wind begins blowing, signifying history has been changed. This sends Primal Dialga into an even larger rampage and he instinctively teleports to a nearby Passage of time. Grovyle, Celebi, and Dusknoir band together to fight and defeat Primal Dialga before he can potentially damage time by attacking the Passage of Time. Immediately after the battle, time is fully restored and the Pokémon of the future begin disappearing. However, all the Pokémon of the future awaken to discover they are still alive. Dialga, restored to his true self, reveals he believes a being higher than himself saved the Pokémon of the future from disappearing. Grovyle sends a message on the wind to tell the Player and Partner that they will rebuild the future and most importantly, they are alive.
