Tate: We don't need to talk because...
Liza: ...we can each tell...
Tate: ...what the other is thinking...
Liza: ...all in our minds!
Tate: This combination of ours...
Liza: Can you beat it?

Tate and Liza are the multi-battling Psychic-type twin Gym Leaders of Mossdeep City in the Hoenn region. Since they cooperate as the Gym Leaders of Mossdeep City, all battles against Tate and Liza are Double Battles.

Appearance[]

Due to being twins, Tate and Liza are almost identical appearance-wise. They both appear to be little kids with dark blue hair, fair skin, and gray eyes. Their clothes are also identical (save for two colored stars on their chests) and resemble clothing worn by Chinese Shaolin monks. They both sport a pair of white ribbons in their hair. However, to tell the difference between the two of them, Liza has two pigtails, while Tate does not.

Generation III[]

Tate and Liza wear pink-outlined blue outfits with Poké Ball logos on their chests and on their biceps. They also wear blue shoes with pink outlines.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire[]

Tate and Liza wear an outfit that consists of a puffy-sleeved white and blue shirt with two stars on it and black cuffs, matching blue pants with a planet-like symbol on the thighs, and blue flats. The only difference is the two stars on their chests- Tate has green stars, while Liza has magenta ones.

Personality[]

Unique, cooperative and a perfect duo, Tate and Liza are a synchronized pair of twins who tend to finish each other's sentences at times. This mental connection between siblings is their most defining trait. However, although they have a mental connection, Tate is more serious than his older twin sister. For this reason, Tate seems to be the more rational and mature of the two (especially when it comes to Pokémon battles). When they are mentally in tune with each other, the twins cover each other's flaws and become a force to be reckoned with.

Etymology[]

The names Tate and Liza come from "levitate".

Their Japanese names, Fū and Ran, could come from 浮 (fū, floating) and 覽 (ran, perceive) respectively. Following the plant-based naming of most Gym Leaders, it could also come from 風蘭 (fūran, the Japanese name for the wind orchid).

Biography[]

Games[]

Generation III[]

Tate and Liza collectively serve as the seventh Gym Leaders, and they are the only Gym Leaders who are fought in a Double Battle. After being defeated in a Pokémon battle, they give the Mind Badge to the player. Tate and Liza do not appear elsewhere afterward.

Pokémon Black Version 2 and Pokémon White Version 2[]

Tate and Liza are participants in the Pokémon World Tournament. Unlike before, the two Gym Leaders are fought separately instead of together, even during Double Battles. Tate and Liza are each part of the Hoenn Leaders Tournament, the Type Expert Tournament (categorized as part of the Psychic experts), and the World Leaders Tournament.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire[]

Tate and Liza retain the same role as in the Generation III games. When the player enters the Hall of Fame, they can find Tate and Liza shopping in the Lilycove Department Store.
