TMs and HMs are items that resemble CDs. They contain moves that can be taught to certain Pokémon.
TM[]
TM stands for Technical Machine. Pokemon Trainers can give them to their Pokémon to help them learn new moves to use against opposing Pokémon. In Generations I to IV, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl and Generation IX, TMs can only be used once, after which they disappear from the Bag. From Generation V to Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, players get to use them more than once, just like an HM.
List of Technical Machines[]
Between each Generation of the Pokémon series, the Technical Machines featured alter their attributed numbers depending on the game, to make space for new Technical Machines introduced. A list of such are as follows:

HM[]
A Hidden Machine, HM for short, is in almost every way identical to a TM, except for three differences:
- The moves cannot be overridden by simply learning another move
- The moves can be used outside of battle after obtaining the relevant gym badge
- The HM can be used multiple times without breaking (this is only a difference up to Generation IV; as of Generation V, TMs can not be broken).
Additionally, Pokémon on a third generation game cartridge cannot be transferred to a fourth generation game card if it knows an HM move, you must go to the Move Deleter in your game in order to transfer these Pokémon to Pokémon Diamond/Pokémon Pearl. Also when you transfer Pokémon to Black/White, through the Poketransfer, the Pokémon may not know any HMs.

Trivia[]
- In Pokémon Black and White, the television frequently broadcasts a program called Moves for Living, which describes move attributes, and is hosted by a scientist named Dr. Technic Al. Machine.
- In Generation VII, HMs were removed. Poké Ride and Secret Technique serve as functional replacements.
- In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the Pokétch serves as the functional replacement for the eight HMs in the original Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, with the moves being added to the app upon acquiring the respective TM for the first time. Field moves that are not originally HMs, such as Flash and Dig, must still be activated from the Pokémon menu screen.
- TMs and HMs were designed to resemble Floppy Discs in Generation I, but later designs resemble CDs or DVD players.
- They can be used only once in Generations I to IV, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and Generation IX. Starting in Generation V onwards, TMs can be used indefinitely.
- In Generation VIII, TRs, whose design resemble vinyls, are introduced and serve as one-time TMs.
- 170 Moves have appeared in TMs and HMs.
- Upon defeat, Gym Leaders usually give out TMs matching their type. The only exceptions so far are Brock (giving out TM34 in Generation I) and Falkner (giving out TM31 in Generation II).
- Some TMs retain the same move over Generations:
- TM06, 14, 15, 22, 25, 26, 29, 32, 38 and 44 from Generation I to VII except Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!.
- TM05, 10, 11, 17, 18, 21, 27, 30, 36, 37, 45 and 46 from Generation II to VII except Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!.
- TM19, 23 and 47 from Generation II to IV.
- TM13, 24 and 33 in Generation I and III to VII except Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!.
- TM39 and 42 in Generation I and II, retaining another move from Generation III to VII except Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!.
- In Generation I, 24 TMs contain
