Wake Up Snorlax! (Japanese: おきろ!カビゴン!, Hepburn: Wake Up! Snorlax!) is the 41st episode of Pocket Monsters of Pocket Monsters (1997 series), Season 1 of Pokémon the Series, and Pokémon: Indigo League of Pokémon the Series: The Beginning.
Synopsis[]
The further you journey, the hungrier you get. On empty stomachs, our heroes' search for food brings them to a small village, but find there is no food at the bakery nor at the grocery store; even the town restaurant is out of food. Just as our hungry heroes lose the energy even to move, the town elder arrives and offers to feed them. He explains to them that a drought has made it impossible to gather a harvest in the village, but cannot explain why they suffer from drought even though it rains often. In return for the meal, our heroes follow the dry riverbed upstream, investigating the cause of the drought.[1]
Episode plot[]
On their journey, our heroes find a hippie playing a flute. The only thing he asks them for in return for his song is something to eat. Sadly, our heroes don't have anything to spare, and move on to the man's disappointment. Team Rocket, who had been tailing the heroes, also come across the hippie, and they rudely deny him food, which causes him to warn them that they should respect their elders.
As the heroes make it to town, they realize that nobody has any food. The Mayor houses and feeds the visitors and informs them of the famine. He states that all of their produce died because the river mysteriously dried up. This causes our heroes to investigate. As they go, they find a massive Snorlax in the way, blocking the water. It was asleep so they attempt to wake it, but every attempt fails, especially since some Snorlax can weigh a thousand pounds. Ash even tries to catch it, but this too fails.
Team Rocket appear with a camera and microphone with a plan to steal it, and the heroes even volunteer to help (since it would mean restoring the water to the town), but this too fails. Trying to lift it with the hot air balloon, trying to wake it with an alarm clock, a bucket of water, it all fails. They try to kiss it awake just like in Sleeping Beauty. Psyduck tries and fails, Meowth tries reluctantly despite his protests Jessie and James force him and fails offering only a feeling of nausea to poor Snorlax, as if he had been poisoned, and sarcasm from Brock, Ash and Misty on his breath... Snorlax rolls over and begins to crush them. Ash finds a card speaking of how only the Pokemon Flute can awaken Snorlax (the pokedex provides information and an image of the Flute Pokemon). Misty notices that this flute resembles that of the hippie, Ash remembers the Hippie. After an argument, Jessie attacks Ash with Arbok, but Ash uses Pidgeotto to send Team Rocket blasting off again. Ash rushes to get the Hippie, who reveals the Snorlax to be his partner. He awakens the Snorlax, but this was proven to not be the issue. The real issue was thorns blocking the way, which Snorlax begins to eat. The town is saved, and they throw a celebratory feast for their heroes. After the meal, Snorlax goes back to sleep, where it once more crushes Team Rocket.

Trivia[]
- "Who's that Pokémon?:" Snorlax (JP; US; Canada)
- When the Pokédex I.D.s Snorlax the light on it keeps flashing even though it had finished describing Snorlax.
- This episode is the first to show a character bleeding; in this case, Misty cuts herself on a thorn.
- The way Psyduck and Meowth kisses Snorlax is a reference to both Disney movies "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and "Sleeping Beauty" where a prince wakes up a princess with a kiss.
- When Jessie explains the story of Sleeping Beauty, an image of Sleeping Beauty is shown that closely resembles Princess Peach from the Super Mario series in appearance (pink dress with short puffed sleeves, a frilled collar, a gold-trimmed brooch, crown, earrings, and blonde hair).
Mistakes[]
- When Misty's Psyduck got entangled with Thorn Forest, his left foot is discolored.
- When Ash and co. are listening to the hippie playing the flute, both Ash and Misty's shoes are discolored.
- When Ash and co. were surprised by the hippie's request, the blush on Pikachu's cheeks were missing.
- Jessie's lipstick is absent when she and the rest of Team Rocket listen to the hippie playing the flute and when Team Rocket were yelling at Ash due to him saying that the former messes up everything.
Dub differences[]
- The town is actually a village in the Japanese version.
- Thus, in the Japanese version the mayor is actually a village elder.
- In the original version hippie is simply referred to as an old man.
