Zap!! A Rising Beam of Light (Japanese: ホワホワ!! あがる光柱, Hepburn: Howahowa!! Agaru Kouji, trans. Zap!! Rising Beam of Light) is the 4th chapter of Pokémon Adventures: Volume 1 (SWSH).
Synopsis[]
As they try to investigate a Power Spot, Henry Sword and Casey receive a package, containing the outfits for the official Gym Challenge. However, they get assaulted by two Team Yell grunts - people devoted to support their idol, Marnie. In order to reverse the situation and get the best out of it, Henry and Casey confuse the grunts and take them into the Power Spot, where they face a Dynamax Gurdurr, and work together to defeat it.
Chapter plot[]
The guys try to figure out Marvin's Sobble's nickname: "The Sob", "Sobbler", "His Sobbleness" or "El Sobberino". Casey joins them, while Henry Sword reminds it is important to nickname one's Pokémon. In fact, he wonders of a situation where they could face a trainer with the exact same Pokémon, which makes issuing orders much more confusing. Casey asks about other Pokémon's nicknames, to which Henry introduces Sirfetch'd as "Lancelot" and Grookey as "Twiggy", based on their weapons. Casey greets them, then turns to Marvin, who decides to nickname his Sobble as "Sniffler". Sniffler and Marvin are pleased, but suddenly, the vehicle stops. Casey shouts out that they have arrived: she and Scorbunny show Marvin the wild area.
Marvin asks about this land, to which Professor Magnolia arrives, answering that this is the place where many wild Pokémon live. The professor asks Casey to investigate the Rolling Hills, but Marvin asks what is she going to investigate. Casey reminds Marvin about the professor's research, to which he remembers it is Dynamax, the phenomenon where Pokémon grow huge in size. Casey yells that Dynamax occurs in Power Spots, which are supposedly located in this wild area. While one can find such spots by walking, Caseyy uses a program to find that out. She discovers some places, scattered around the Rolling Hills.
Magnolia asks that they could shift in turns to investigate the den - the nickname for Power Spots. She shows a pillar of light, coming from a hole, in which some Dynamax Pokémon live. Marvin becomes a bit nervous, thinking that these are actual giant Pokémon. Casey believes they can enter this den and fight the Dynamax Pokémon, and even catch it. Magnolia confirms that, but only if they win that battle. However, she asks of them not to rush in, for their primary objective is to collect data. Marvin thinks that they don't know which Pokémon they could encounter. Casey denies that, for the Rotom Phone could tell them.
Suddenly, Casey's Rotom Phone is ringing. She comes outside, and is excited to see a Pelipper carrying a package. Pelipper descends down, to which Casey signs her name on the package and takes it. She thanks Pelipper for the delivery, who flies away. Casey opens the package, which is from the Gym Challenge executive office. Much to her excitement, she shows two uniforms for official matches. Marvin asks about the number "303" engraved onto the shirt, to which Casey explains that is her favorite number. Henry Sword got an "808" number, and admits he completely forgot that he had to wear this during the matches. Just as they plan on trying them on, an Obstagoon appears, and nearly slashes their uniforms.
Casey takes offense that her uniform got nearly destroyed. Suddenly, two people appear, claiming they even want to see these uniforms destroyed and have them give up on the Gym Challenge, a fate that is sealed to them. Casey does not understand a word these two are saying, whereas Henry Sword asks how do these people know their names. The two people explain that Henry and Casey are known in the region, for being the new trainers that have entered the Gym Challenge, and are traveling with Professor Magnolia in the motorhome. The two people exclaim they came to stop them, and that they are Team Yell. Henry realizes they came here to stop them in partaking the challenge. Team Yell confirm this, and have Linoone and Thievul attack them.
Linoone goes to use Sucker Punch, but is countered by Lancelot's shield. Thievul attempts to use Night Slash, which annoys Casey about these encounters. Team Yell explain they are doing this in the name of their goddess, and show a poster with an image of a "goddess": Lady Marnie. Casey points a finger at them, angry that this "goddess" of theirs is causing them act as unfair cowards. The two grunts are angry, for she would never ask of them to behave unruly, to which Marvin adds that they know they are doing a bad thing. The grunts exclaim they will support Marnie in winning, and have Thievul and Linoone continue attacking. Casey has Scorbunny emit flames from its feet, and even burns Linoone.
Scorbunny attempts to repeat the attack, but gets intercepted by Linoone, who bashes it away. Henry Sword believes Linoone's ability is Quick Feet: its speed is increased during a status condition. Casey is a bit disappointed, while Henry whispers to his Twiggy. The latter sneaks around, and hits the two grunts with the stick. The grunts run around, reminding that Pokémon shouldn't attack trainers. As they are distracted, Henry passes a band to Casey, and the two equip them on their wrists. The grunts are very annoyed by Twiggy; taking advantage of this moment, Henry and Casey tackle the grunts into the hole - the Power Spot. Marvin runs after them with Professor Magnolia, shocked that they simply jumped into this hole.
Henry Sword rises up, and looks up with Casey and the grunts: they face a giant Gurdurr. Casey is a bit happy to see the inside of this den, while the male grunt reminds they cannot leave unless they beat the giant Gurdurr. Henry confirms this, and proposes they work together, to which the grunts grit their teeth. The Dynamax Gurdurr attacks Obstagoon, defeating it in an instant. The female grunt has her Thievul use Fire Fang. Gurdurr is unaffected by its biting, and tosses Thievul away. Henry takes a moment, thinking its ability is Guts, while the grunt is annoyed by his calmness. Henry asks if they could repeat the attack on its beam: Casey has Scorbunny use Ember on the beam, followed with Thievul's Fire Fang. However, Gurdurr swings its beam, defeating Thievul as well.
Henry Sword, however, asks of Casey to have Scorbunny repeat its attacks. The continued attacks cause Gurdurr's beam to turn red: the beam itself is too hot for Gurdurr to use, and it drops that weapon. Henry has Lancelot use Brave Bird, which slams Gurdurr, knocking it down. With the power of his band, Henry enlarges his Poké Ball, and tosses it towards Gurdurr. The Poké Ball falls down, and in a moment, it resizes back: Henry caught Gurdurr. The grunts are quite annoyed, and leave in anger, but Henry thanks them nevertheless. Casey is quite amazed that they dragged the grunts into this battle and had their Pokémon knocked out during this Dynamax battle, to the point Henry Sword caught a Gurdurr. Henry admits he always wanted to catch one, and decides to nickname it, based on its gear, as "Steeler".
A moment later, the two regroup with Magnolia and Marvin. Henry Sword tells the latter that the app on his Rotom Phone told him about the Dynamax Gurdurr. Magnolia is a bit disappointed, considering she did warn them not to rush. Still, she assumes they did take use of these Dynamax Bands, to which Casey and Henry confirm that. Marvin asks about the Dynamax Band. Henry and Casey look to Professor Magnolia, who promises to explain this, since he is a part of their traveling group.
