Gold hears Buena's Password for the first time in The Golden Boys manga
The Radio is a feature of the PokéGear in Pokémon Gold Version and Pokémon Silver Version, Pokémon Crystal Version, and the remakes Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version.
Description[]
The player can use the Radio to tune into radio stations of the Johto region, as well as a few of the Kanto region. The contents of the radio stations vary, with some playing music and others being talk shows. The audio is not heard from the game, being represented by dialog boxes instead. Similar to TVs, the talk shows may provide the player with certain information, such as the location of certain Pokémon. The Radio is activated once the player has obtained the Radio Card, and a few more stations become available once the player obtains the EXPN Card.
There is no reception for the radio in the Ruins of Alph, where unusual transmissions are played instead. Likewise, in Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version, there is broadcast interference while at Mahogany Town, Route 43, and the Lake of Rage before clearing Team Rocket HQ. During Team Rocket's takeover of the Goldenrod Radio Tower, after the player has defeated Pryce, all broadcast are replaced with an announcement from Team Rocket stating that they have banded back together and are looking for Giovanni.
List of stations[]
- Pokémon Music: Airs different music depending on the current day of the week.
- Professor Oak's Pokémon Talk: A station hosted by Professor Oak and DJ Mary that informs about where Pokémon are encountered, and later mass outbreaks once the National Pokédex has been obtained.
- Variety Channel: Hosts one of a few stations, one of which is Buena's Password (formerly its own channel in the Generation II games). The player can collect one of potential prizes over at the Goldenrod Radio Tower. The Variety Channel and its other two stations, Pokémon Search Party and Serial Radio Drama, were all introduced in Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version.
- Poké Flute: Integrates the function of the Poké Flute item from the Generation I games, being used to awaken sleeping Snorlaxes.
- That Town, These People: Talks about the different towns and characters.
- Pokédex Show: Provides random Pokédex entries. The station does not return in Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version.
