Biography

Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver

Dr. Namba was working to capture the mysterious Lugia, and had his men track it down. However, he reminded that it must not be hurt. While Butch and Cassidy did not succeed in capturing it, Namba unveiled that he wanted to use Lugia and power his weapon up, and ordered Jessie and James to serve him some food, angering the latter two.[1] With Lugia, named Silver, captured, Namba taunted it. He planned on keeping it, and provoke its parent, the bigger Lugia, to come out and capture it as well. Seeing Lugia's presence, Namba had Butch and Cassidy prepare themselves as he took Silver out of the water, kept in a cage. Using the devices made by Dr. Namba, Butch and Cassidy trapped Lugia, and captured the heroes for interfering with their mission.[2]

Namba was proud that Lugia was captured. He went to the heroes, who were caged, and introduced himself to them. He announced he'd use Lugia's energy and use it for his own needs. He proclaimed Pokémon should be used for mankind, which disgusted the heroes. He also reminded that he created the devices for Cassidy's Houndour and Butch's Hitmontop, which increased their rage. He believed that rage was power, and intended to use those same devices to increase Ash's Pikachu and Ritchie's Sparky's rage. Just as he went to do so, Oliver came in and unlocked their cage, forcing Ash to tackle Namba.

Namba triggered the alarm, summoning Butch and Cassidy to deal with the heroes. Namba ran out, to Silver, intending on using it. He sent Electabuzz, who was also equipped with the device that amplified its rage. Electabuzz went to use Thunder Punch, but missed, so Namba increased the device's power to attack the two Pikachu. However, Ritchie had Sparky use Thunderbolt on Namba, destroying his remote to lose control he had over Electabuzz. This let the two Pikachu use Thunder to defeat Electabuzz. Namba was defeated, to which Ash claimed that he should put trust in his Pokémon, rather than enrage them. With Lugia rescued, Namba's base was destroyed, and Namba was seen floating on sea.[3]

Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire

Butch and Cassidy were sent by Namba to kidnap Professor Oak for his project. The two were successful and took Oak to an abandoned building, where they called Namba. The latter tried to force Oak to reveal information about the Pokérus. He was aware of the virus' existence, which helped grow Pokémon much faster, but was not certain where he could find samples of it. He tried to intimdate Professor Oak into revealing more, but soon enough, Ritchie and Tracey, accompanied by Officer Jenny, went to rescue him.[4]

Namba sent a chip of his voice recording to Butch and Cassidy, to capture a Delcatty at Cerulean City.[5] Namba sent Butch and Cassidy to capture a Luvdisc for his project. He had them go to Cerulean City's Gym, where two Luvdisc were located.[5] Cassidy and Butch, disguised as scientists, planned on capturing Moltres. They contacted Dr. Namba, to which Ritchie overheard their talking.[6] Cassidy and Butch were stealing Pokémon, which made James, Jessie and Meowth upset that they never called them to assist the duo in this task, not even Dr. Namba, who corrected them for saying his name wrong.[7]

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl

Dr. Namba sent Cassidy and Butch to capture a Hippowdon from Sinnoh, giving them a machine to help them in capturing it. After they failed to do so, they got a call from Dr. Umba, to which Namba corrected them for his mispronounced name.[8]
