One-line "articles"

Marius rants: I just had a look at a "new" page, Pokemon Red... OK, this is getting repetitive. Do people bother Searching for existing articles before writing these one-liners? We already have an excellent, in-depth article on Pokémon Red/Blue; it even links to a walkthrough. This is hardly the only instance; people bless us all the time with single-sentence stubs that then have to be either filled out, deleted, or tagged as stubs by someone else. If the so-called "contributor" isn't going to write a decent article, why write one at all? Why even pretend? What is the point of littering this Wiki with stubs?? -- Marius the Wanderer 16:35, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Because people don't waste a second of the time to check if there's a similar article. But it's not all their fault. This article is linked from other articles, so he saw a red link and got into it. In this case, the better you can do is to place a #REDIRECT [[Pokémon Red/Blue]] in it. --Ciencia Al Poder (Discussion) w:t-en WikiDex 20:03, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

spelling and grammar

You guys I just skimmed over 20 topics and edited a lot of grammatical and spelling errors. It's almost comparable to a 5 year old trying to write a paper on Quantam Mechanics.

It may be useful to add a related Wikia section on this wiki. See Wikia:Category:Gaming for some which may have a similar theme to this one. Also, see Wikia:Category:English for other English language Wikia. Angela 23:41, 27 Jan 2005 (PST)

There already is a Pokemon wiki, Bulbapedia, which, (no offense, admin of this site) makes this wiki useless Bly1993 01:45, 29 Dec 2005 (UTC)

There's a difference: The license of this wiki is GFDL, the same as Wikipedia, so we can put content from wikipedia here (saying where it comes from). Bulbapedia has a CC-NC-SA license. In my opinion, the "non-commercial" issue makes the license non-free --you're not free to do what you want with the content. This is a great difference, at least for me. --Ciencia Al Poder (Discussion) w:t-en WikiDex 20:21, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

This brings to mind another question: What, exactly, makes (or will make) the Pokémon Encyclopedia special?

In researching for my work here, I've visited bunches of Pokémon sites, and almost all of them have important features in common: Pokédex entries, game walkthroughs, character bios, animé episode synopses... We, of course, have and will have those too. But each of those other sites also has something unique about it, whether that be repositories of artwork/fanfic, downloadable freebies like a Pokémon Advent calendar (available on until last week), or the author's extensive philosophical ponderings on the Ways, Means and Significance of the Pokémon world.

I'm not saying this site needs those particular features (that'd just be replicating things available elsewhere). But it'd be good for us to establish a distinctive identity, a reason for someone to visit our site even if they've already seen some of the others. We have a lot of catching-up to do in some departments. But while we're doing that, we can also come up with and implement a few things that could make us stand out--our own Thing, not just another Pokésite among so many.

Ideas...? -- Marius the Wanderer 05:05, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Protecting the home page

I think that the Home page should be protected. This project hasn't been vandalized yet, but the Home page is both the first page everyone sees, and the most likely to be vandalized.

(Yes, I can do this any time I want, but I want to give people a chnae to comment before I do so.)

  • Well, now the home page has been vandalized, so we should probably get an effective reporting system, if one isn't already in effect. BambookidX 01:28, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
  • We need to fix the text on the Main Page and add images if possible, to make it attractive. If more vandalism occurs, we will need to consider locking the page, despite Wikipedia's cautions against this.

I noticed that in the titlebar, it says:

PageName - Pokemon

You can make it say The Pokémon Encyclopedia instead of just Pokémon by editing MediaWiki:Pagetitle Minun (talk) 14:47, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

When is this Wiki going to be completed? It's NOWHERE close to done.

That's good because otherwise we would have to sit around and do nothing all day. MarioGalaxy {talk/contribs/Count} 00:34, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Little collaboration

Hi. Before asking anything, only check out w:c:es.pokemon and [1]. Now comes the question for the admin. There's a form of use language tags? like "en:<pagename>" for english and "es:<pagename>" por spanish. I ask that because it will be cool if we link articles in one language with articles in the other language. If you agree, I ask Wikia for the interlanguage support.

--DragonTrainer - Flamewars aquí, por favor. 02:27, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

There is no admin here at the moment. I'm looking after it though.

Just FYI: The interlanguage links were done, you can see them in the main page (the links are on the sidebar, the code which produces them at the bottom of the main page). But the most active wikis (with articles to link each other) are only this and the spanish one. --Ciencia Al Poder (Discussion) w:t-en WikiDex 20:16, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Lack of information

All right, I've also been going through this site. Nice idea, nice users, etc. The only things I dislike are the spelling and grammar, and the lack of content.

Spelling and grammar is pretty easy to check. Use a dictionary. The paper kind. You all DO remember paper, right?

The second thing I have a pet peeve about is the information, or more accurately, lack of. Half the site is just red links. I believe that most people should focus on the Pokédex entries before anything else. That is why this is called the Pokémon Encyclopedia, right? Also, most of the content I've seen by clicking on the Random Page link is just copied stuff from other sites. People need to go out and actually type something they make up themselves, not just Googled stuff. There's only pictures for about three or four Pokémon, as far as I could tell.

Yet another thing: the issue with the "é". In "Pokémon", the "é" is there to indicate the way you're supposed to say it. I don't care how you say it, but the correct way to type "Pokémon" is with an "é", in my opinion.

If you're wondering how to get that special E when there's no key for it on the keyboard, just do this: 1. Go to Start- Run. 2. Type in "charmap" without the quotation marks. 3. You'll get a window with a ton of weird characters. make sure teh font on the top is set to Times New Roman, and find the "é" in the list of characters. 4. Click Select. 5. Click Copy. 6. Copy the character instead of "e" in the word "Pokémon." 7. You are done.

This only works on Windows as far as I can tell. I don't know how to do it on a Mac, as I don't own one.

Now that I've vented my issues, I hope to see this Wiki blossom into a wonderful place of learning and information. Thank you for listening to my ranting. Shadowiceavian 19:25, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

An easier "é"

With Numeric Keypad ON, hold down the ALT key and enter 130 on the numeric keypad; then release all keys. You'll get the lower-case Pokémon "é". On some Laptops you'll have to use a "function" key to activate the numeric keypad function; hold that and ALT to do the ALT-130 magic. -- Marius the Wanderer 06:00, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Pokédex entries

I suggest We copy the entire Pokedex on Wikipedia and go from there, they also actually have competitive movesets, what the non-fanboys are looking for.-- 00:13, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

I agree. I finished creating my first page, the List of Pokémon by Name page last night and thought I'd start adding the information for individual monsters' pages in the next few days, as long as no one has any objections. KCorp4000 16:55, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
