- For the identically titled building owned by Mr. Backlot, see Pokémon Mansion (Sinnoh).
The Pokémon Mansion is a location introduced in Generation I.
Description[]
The Pokémon Mansion is a wrecked mansion located on Cinnabar Island in the Kanto region. It is an abandoned and charred building, named for formerly housing a famous Pokémon researcher, though the reasons why the Pokémon Mansion became abandoned is never explained. Numerous Burglars can be found throughout the Pokémon Mansion, along with a variety of Fire and Poison-type Pokémon, owing to the decrepit state of the building.
It has four floors, the last of which is the basement level and the first of which is the entrance to the Pokémon Mansion. To advance through the Pokémon Mansion, the player must hit some switches found on some Mewtwo statues, in order to open and close doors that may block progress. The player is required to explore the Pokémon Mansion to find the Secret Key so that they can unlock the door to Cinnabar Island Gym. The Secret Key can be found in the basement, along with several Scientists, who say that the big space is ideal for a lab. Although the Pokémon Mansion has only entrance, it has two exits that both lead the player to Cinnabar Island through the entrance door.
Within the Pokémon Mansion's wreckage are books containing journals and notes about Mew and Mewtwo, showing that the Pokémon Mansion was the place where Mew was cloned to create Mewtwo and the consequent destruction and disaster that Mewtwo brought about. The first full-length Pokémon film, MS001: Pokémon: The First Movie, is about these events.
In the Generation II games and their Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version remakes, Pokémon Mansion is no longer on Cinnabar Island, since everything there had been destroyed by a volcanic eruption, except the Pokémon Center.
In Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version, Pokémon Mansion is a location that needs to be visited in order to complete the main quest of the game as it contains the Secret Key for Cinnabar Island Gym. To find the key, the player has to figure out the correct way of pressing the buttons on Mewtwo Statues which open and closed doors. The player has to visit the topmost floor and then jump into a cracked floor to proceed to the basement where the secret key lies. Despite being a building, Escape Rope and Dig can be used to get back to Cinnabar Island.
Pokémon Mansion is the first area where Grimers, Koffings, and Magmars can be encountered, the latter appearing only in Pokémon Blue Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version.
