Pokémon Battle Revolution (ポケモンバトルレボリューション Pokémon Batoru Reboryūshon) is the first game of the Pokémon franchise for the Wii. It is also the first game on the Wii to connect to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, and to feature wireless connectivity between the Wii and the Nintendo DS system.
Gameplay[]
Pokémon Battle Revolution plays out in a Pokémon theme park known as Pokétopia. Players can rent up to six Pokémon, which become increasingly stronger as the player progresses. The player must pass through ten colosseums and defeat their Colosseum Leader to reach their goal of becoming the Pokétopia Master. These stadiums include new features, such as different play styles in which the order of Pokémon are randomized or being forced to play with some of the opponent's Pokémon. The player earns Poké Coupons, the currency of this game, by clearing a colosseum. Poké Coupons can be spent to customize the player character's in-game appearance with items such as apparel, face paint, and hair color. They can also purchase rare items that can be transferred to one of the Generation IV games in the core series, designed particularly for Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version, but later releases Pokémon Platinum Version and Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version also have retroactive compatibility with Pokémon Battle Revolution.
Pokémon moves are much more diverse, with each Pokémon acquiring its own animation for most moves in the game. Some animations feature both the attacking and defending Pokémon on screen at the same time. In previous console titles, the game only showed one Pokémon attacking and then cut away to the second getting hit by the attack.
A player can obtain Pokémon and transfer them back to one of the main Generation IV games through the Mystery Gift feature, allowing players to obtain rare Pokémon. Players can unlock Pokémon by achieving certain goals or entering a special code. A Pikachu with the special moves Volt Tackle and Surf can be obtained by beating each Colosseum once, whereas an Electivire and a Magmortar can be obtained via special codes. Besides the Pokémon download, players can purchase items like certain TMs and evolution items.
Wireless and online functionality[]
Pokémon Battle Revolution has two online modes: Battle with a Friend, which allows a player to battle a friend using a Friend Code, and Battle with Someone, which lets the player face off against a random opponent. After each random battle, players are given the chance to exchange trainer passes, if all of them agree to doing so.
Pokémon can be copied over from one of the main Generation IV games to Pokémon Battle Revolution for a Custom Pass and then used in free battles and some colosseums, while using the Nintendo DS as the controller. In this case, the battle menu is displayed on the Nintendo DS's touch screen, replacing the battle menu used in conjunction with the Wii Remote, and is navigated using the stylus. Trading the Origin Forme of Giratina, the Sky Forme of Shaymin, and any of Rotom's alternate forms to Pokémon Battle Revolution forces the Pokémon into their main form upon arriving into Pokémon Battle Revolution since the forms were introduced in Pokémon Platinum Version, released after Pokémon Battle Revolution.
Nintendo DS controls were unusable in online multiplayer. When playing random online battles, the player's trainer's custom greetings and Pokémon nicknames are all changed to its native nation's defaults; for example, a Japanese Magikarp will show its Japanese name instead of its English one. All Pokémon from Generation IV and earlier are allowed in random battles.
Colosseums[]
The game features 11 different colosseums, one of which is available only in local or online multiplayer.
- Gateway Colosseum, which is only open to a rental pass holder
- Main Street Colosseum
- Waterfall Colosseum
- Crystal Colosseum, holds battles in a 16-person single-elimination tournament mode
- Neon Colosseum, which uses a wheel to choose the player's and opponent's battling Pokémon
- Sunny Park Colosseum
- Sunset Colosseum
- Magma Colosseum
- Courtyard Colosseum
- Stargazer Colosseum
- Lagoon Colosseum, available only in DS Multiplayer and Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection before it shut down
Development[]
Pokémon Battle Revolution was first announced by Satoru Iwata at a Nintendo marketing event in Japan on June 7, 2006.[1] Satoru Iwata used Pokémon Battle Revolution as the game when demonstrating the connectivity between the Wii and Nintendo DS, particularly how Pokémon in Pokémon Diamond Version or Pokémon Pearl Version can be used in Pokémon Battle Revolution, with the Nintendo DS as the controller. The feature of linking between the Wii and Nintendo DS systems was first accessible at 2006 Nintendo World Tour.
