After hearing that her rivals Kenny and Nando have scored new Contest victories, Dawn is eager to train her newly-evolved Piloswine for their next competition. But Piloswine refuses to follow her commands and only shows an interest in eating Poffins! When the Poffin supply runs out, Piloswine charges and tries to put Ash's Grotle and Gliscor on ice. Luckily, Gliscor's new move, Fire Fang, counters Piloswine's icy blasts, and Brock's Happiny stops Piloswine in its tracks. Maybe a friendly Pokémon battle is what Piloswine needs, but it's not even interested in battling Grotle. It hits Grotle with AncientPower, then abandons the fight when it smells food—Team Rocket's food!

With Oreburgh Gym Leader Roark as referee, Ash starts his 3-on-3 Gym battle against Byron, Canalave's fossil-loving Gym Leader. Byron's first Pokémon is the Steel-and-Psychic Bronzor, so Ash sends out Chimchar, a Fire-type Pokémon. But Bronzor's Ability, Heatproof, helps protect it against Chimchar's Fire attacks, and then it uses Rain Dance to rain on Chimchar's parade! Chimchar refuses to give up, and uses Flame Wheel in a head-on charge against Bronzor's Gyro Ball—the hit knocks out Bronzor, but Chimchar barely manages to stay on its feet!

As always, Team Rocket tries to grab Pikachu, but Ash catches up with them and escapes into the sewer with his buddy. On top of that, the frequency from their machines has driven the local Steel-type Pokémon berserk! The energy has overwhelmed Riley's Lucario, and Lucario attacks Riley and our heroes. Fortunately, Riley is training to be an Aura Guardian, and he uses his own Aura to shield everyone. At Riley's insistence, Pikachu hits Lucario with a Thunderbolt—Lucario backs off, but then it charges Team Galactic! In the meantime, the energy from the ruins has triggered reactions from distant Mt. Coronet and even the meteorites in Veilstone City, and scientists around the region are scrambling to figure out what's happening.

Dawn, Ash, and Brock arrive in Chocovine Town to find everyone in a festive mood. It's not the upcoming Contest that has everyone excited—it's the annual visit of the Phione! These rare aquatic Pokémon can be seen near town and are said to bring good luck. That night, Dawn and her friends take a Phione-watching tour on a submarine, unaware that the submarine is crewed by Team Rocket. Three Phione swim past the submarine, and one of them is so interested in Dawn's Buneary that it stays behind after the other Phione have continued on their way. After the tour is over, Team Rocket returns and snags that lone Phione in a net, but makes the mistake of letting it out for a swim in the town fountain. Phione uses Acid Armor to escape down the drain so it can search for Buneary.

After a big party that their old friend Candice throws in Zoey’s honor, Dawn decides she needs to come up with a new move to use in the upcoming Double Battle round of her next Contest. Frustration soon sets in, as she can’t seem to get the inspiration to come up with a fresh idea. And that’s when her friend—and rival—Zoey offers to help. With the rest of our heroes cheering them on, as well as some additional help from the Snowpoint Gym Leader Candice, Dawn does some creative visualization and comes up with an ingenious Fire- and Ice-type combination move, which she dubs “Flame Ice.” The move appears to be working perfectly...until it sputters out right before it is able to make contact with Zoey’s Leafeon and Kirlia. Not to be discouraged, Dawn promises to have the move down pat before her next Contest. Our heroes bid goodbye to their friends as they confidently set out toward Dawn’s next Contest, as well as Ash’s next Gym Battle.
