Pokémon: BW Rival Destinies is the fifteenth season of Pokémon the Series, and the second season of Pokémon the Series: Black & White. It currently features Ash Ketchum and his friends, Iris and Cilan, and their adventures through Unova from Nimbasa City, Ash's Gym Battle with Clay and his journey through east Unova.

Synopsis[]

New foes, new friends, and dozens of never-before-seen Pokémon await Ash and Pikachu in "Pokémon: BW Rival Destinies", the new season of the Pokémon animated series. As Ash and his friends continue to explore the Unova region, he'll find himself up against the ultimate battle challenge: Alder, the Champion Master of Unova! His friends also face their own trials, one fighting for the right to continue her travels, another confronting a returning challenge from the past—and all three of them must team up to save an island from the clashing forces of three powerful and mysterious Legendary Pokémon![1]

The hard work proves valuable right away when their three-on-three battle begins: it’s Ash’s Palpitoad versus Elesa’s Zebstrika, who had defeated all of Bianca’s Pokémon the day before. Palpitoad, who’s immune to Electric-type moves, emerges victorious over the tough Zebstrika, but it’s exhausted.

Cilan excitedly announces he’s going to participate in the Subway Bosses Stamp Rally, which will allow the winner to have a battle with one of the Subway Bosses, Ingo and Emmet. But to win, he must obtain 60 Pokémon stamps by that afternoon—a challenge that usually takes three days to complete!

Ash wants to battle, of course, but Trip is waiting to meet Alder, the Unova League Champion! En route to the Driftveil Gym, Ash and friends come across a trio of Maractus and their Trainer, Toby, who are rehearsing for their upcoming audition at the Pokémon Musical in Nimbasa City. As part of their rehearsal, they plan to enter the Pokémon Performance Competition, but they’re having some trouble with their grand finale, a move called “Over the Rainbow” that involves one of the Maractus (named Tussy) leaping into the air and landing on the arms of the other two.

Taking a break at a Pokémon Center on their way to Driftveil City, our heroes meet Robert, a young Pokémon Photographer who is thrilled about the opportunity to photograph Pikachu! He shows our heroes some of his other photos, plus a few his grandfather took. Iris and Cilan notice something amazing in the old photos—a single shot of four Sawsbuck, one from every season...together at the same time! Robert says he wants to find where that mysterious picture was taken, and our heroes offer to help.

To keep Gothita happy, its Trainer Katharine asks Ash to trade Scraggy to her, but he refuses. Katharine then challenges Ash to a high-stakes battle: if he loses, he has to make the trade! After she taunts him for a while, Ash finally agrees.

During a practice battle on the way to the Driftveil City Gym, Ash and Cilan are surprised when their battle is interrupted by a Deino—and then two others steal their food! It turns out the three Deino are staying at a Pokémon Day Care run by a man named Bobby, who confesses that he’s been having some trouble with the trio because he has no experience taking care of Dragon types. Iris jumps at the chance to help out, so she, Ash, and Cilan volunteer to watch over the three Deino until their Trainers return.

Ash has finally arrived in Driftveil City for his next Gym battle. However, when they meet Gym Leader Clay, he informs our heroes that he’s too busy at the moment, so Ash and friends decide to hang out until he’s ready. They meet a friendly motorcycle rider named Charles, who offers to show our heroes around town, starting with the famous Driftveil Market. Everyone there knows Charles and his Accelgor, and our heroes are treated to lots of delicious food!

Ash decides to get some practice training in while waiting for Clay, the Driftveil City Gym Leader, to return. Meanwhile, our heroes are surprised to bump into Cilan’s brother, Chili, who has come to challenge Cilan to a battle. Cilan agrees, but when Chili and his Pansear lose to Cilan and Pansage, Chili blames the loss on Pansear, who angrily runs away.

Our heroes return to the Driftveil City Gym and Ash once more challenges Gym Leader Clay to a battle. Clay makes a deal with Ash: if Ash can bring him some of these amazing medicinal herbs, Clay will accept his challenge. So our heroes set off to the Driftveil Market to find some.

Soon after arriving on Milos Island to find the rare medicinal plants known as Revival Herbs for Driftveil Gym Leader Clay, our heroes, along with island resident Lewis, encountered the Legendary Pokémon Tornadus and Thundurus. The barriers erected to keep them away were destroyed by Team Rocket, and the two Pokémon are now battling ferociously, threatening the island’s existence.

After fulfilling Clay’s request for the rare Revival Herbs, Ash is more than ready for his Gym Battle...and finally, so is Clay! They proceed to the battlefield in the Driftveil Gym, located deep underground in one of Clay’s mines. The battle will use three Pokémon per side. Clay starts by bringing out his powerful Krokorok, and Ash realizes that he can’t use Pikachu, who’s been eager to battle, because its Electric-type moves won’t work at all against Clay’s team of Ground types. He picks Oshawott instead, and the battle begins!

Our heroes are approaching Chargestone Cave on the way to Mistralton City when they discover they have some uninvited guests—a group of Joltik clinging to their Electric-type Pokémon and draining their electricity! They head for the nearest Pokémon Center to heal Pikachu, Stunfisk, and Emolga, and bump into their friend Bianca, whose Xtransceiver’s battery has gone dead. Nurse Joy offers a quick recharge, and Bianca calls Professor Juniper, who has set up a base camp at Chargestone Cave, where she and her staff are doing research.

Now that our heroes and Bianca have returned with Professor Juniper to her base camp in Chargestone Cave, their planned Pokémon trade begins. They first decide to have a battle between Shelmet and Karrablast in order to collect pre-Evolution data. But before they begin, strange electrical readings begin to affect their equipment, causing it to malfunction and putting the battle on hold.

Swoobat’s aerial attacks prove to be too much for Krokorok, and Ash is soon down one Pokémon.

The story goes that whoever rings the bell will have all their wishes come true.

Emboar seems to be in quite a pickle as Conkeldurr pounds it with some serious attacks—until some encouraging words from Bianca spark some quick thinking on Emboar’s part, turning the tide in an unexpected way. And just like that, Trip is out of the tournament, and Bianca claims the last spot in the quarterfinals!

The semi-finals of the Clubsplosion Battle Tournament are about to get under way, with Stephan and Sawk versus Bianca and Emboar battling first. Although Bianca and Emboar have been victorious twice in a row, a massive Karate Chop from Sawk eliminates them from the tournament, sending Stephan into the finals.

On the way to Icirrus City and Ash’s next Gym battle, our heroes lose their way among the many twisting tunnels of Twist Mountain. They get some help from a Pokémon archeologist named Ferris, who has just discovered a Cover Fossil, a fossil of the ancient Pokémon Tirtouga! He’s trying to tell them about it when his boss, Sierra, points out that they’re in a restricted area and asks them to leave.

Ash and his friends have made their way through Twist Mountain, meeting a Pokémon archeologist named Ferris, whose Cover Fossil was stolen by Team Rocket and restored into the ancient Pokémon Tirtouga. Then Tirtouga ran away in a state of fear and confusion, and our heroes went after it, hoping to catch up to it before Team Rocket got there!

With Cilan’s help, Ash discovers the Gym in an underground music club, where Roxie is the leader of the punk-rock trio known as Koffing and the Toxics. Roxie accepts Ash’s challenge, on one condition: she wants him to use all six of his Pokémon against her team of three! Ash is a little unsure about this, but she assures him that he’ll appreciate the numbers advantage. He agrees, and the unusual battle begins—in front of a crowd of rowdy fans and with plenty of musical accompaniment!

Cynthia’s butler Jervis takes them to the island by boat, and drops them off with a promise to be back before dinner—and an ominous warning to be very careful on the island.

After Ash and Dawn have a practice battle that ends in a draw, a worried young neighbor named Chris comes by, looking for his lost Cubchoo. The boy tells them Cubchoo somehow got out of its Pokémon house overnight, although there’s only one door and Chris is sure he locked it from the outside.

A fierce aerial battle is taking place between a Hydreigon and a Dragonite! Their battle disturbs a flock of Pidove, who get caught in the crossfire when they try to scatter. Dragonite tries to protect the flock—but that leaves the Pokémon open to Hydreigon’s attack, which smashes it into the ground! Dragonite attempts to fly away, but its wing was injured in the fall, and it crashes into a power plant, damaging some equipment.

The Lacunosa Town Tournament Stadium is buzzing with excitement, as the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup gets under way! With commentary from Freddy The Scoop and Champion Alder, the tournament begins with an exhibition match between Cynthia, the Sinnoh League Champion, and Caitlin, a member of the Unova Elite Four. These two top Trainers show their stuff with an elegant and beautiful battle between Caitlin’s Gothitelle and Cynthia’s Garchomp, which ends in a draw when time is called.

It’s time for the second round of the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup, and Ash, Cilan, Iris, Dawn, and Trip are all in the hunt! A very confident Trip is up first, again winning his bout quickly despite a type disadvantage and moving on to the semi-finals.

The second match of the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup semi-finals begins, with Ash’s Krokorok and Iris’s Dragonite going head to head! Dragonite has Krokorok reeling after a powerful pair of direct hits, but Krokorok is determined to hang on—and then it evolves into Krookodile! This brings the match to a new level of intensity, and when Krookodile hits Dragonite hard with a supereffective Dragon Claw, Dragonite gets angry—really angry—and starts ignoring Iris yet again, unleashing one undisciplined attack after another. Iris helplessly pleads with Dragonite to pull itself together and calm down, and Ash feels sorry for his friend...but it’s a battle, after all, and he and Krookodile aren’t about to let up. Krookodile wins, and Ash moves on to the finals!

With his victory at the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup, Trip has earned the privilege of battling Alder, the Champion of the Unova region! He and his Serperior have a clever strategy against Alder’s Bouffalant—but Alder’s experience and skill are overwhelming, and Trip is defeated. Some sage advice from Alder resonates with the young Trainer, though, and as he says goodbye to our heroes, he seems much calmer and happier as a result.

Our heroes’ new acquaintance Cameron is off to the Humilau Gym to win his eighth Gym badge, and Ash, Cilan, and Iris have decided to tag along! On the way, Ash and Cameron discover they have a lot in common and start chatting away, so when they take a wrong turn and get separated from Iris and Cilan, they don’t notice until their friends are well out of sight. To make matters worse, it starts to rain—hard! The boys seek shelter in a cave, and after Meloetta finds them some fruit for dinner, they decide to take a nap.

Team Rocket has captured Meloetta, brought it to the Undersea Temple, and used a recording of Meloetta's song to raise the temple to the surface. As Operation Tempest continues, Giovanni acquires the mysterious Reveal Glass and uses it to summon the three Legendary Pokémon Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus!

  • This season is the only time that Ash ever met Giovanni in person.
  • This season started the exact way season 4 started, with a two-part Gym Leader debut.
    • Coincidentally, both Whitney and Elesa are female Gym Leaders.
