| Now that the Unova League has ended, our heroes set their sights on Nuvema Town and Professor Juniper’s lab. En route, they come across a terribly upset girl named Natasha, who’s petrified of crossing a bridge because she’s afraid she made it unsafe by tapping on it! Though Ash attempts to prove the bridge is safe by crossing first, he ultimately has to come back and bring her across with him. Natasha is grateful, and Ash offers her some advice: Being careful is fine, but sometimes you just have to go for it!
Our heroes arrive at the lab, and Natasha shows up shortly afterward, looking for a starter Pokémon. Professor Juniper assures her she’s come to the right place, but again, Natasha’s brain is working overtime as she imagines the most nightmarish scenarios possible! However, with Cilan’s advice, Natasha chooses a cute Tepig. Ash then suggests they have a Tag Battle so she can get used to her new Pokémon! The two of them team up against Cilan and Iris so Natasha can learn the ropes of being a new Trainer...and the battle is being observed by none other than Team Rocket! The villains are back on the scene with the goal of stealing Pikachu for their Boss, but when that appears unlikely, they decide to steal Natasha’s Tepig instead! Natasha is more nervous and clueless than ever about what to do, until she remembers Ash’s words of encouragement. Determined, Natasha turns over a new leaf, showing real battling spirit! And with the help of Ash’s incredible Unfezant, Tepig is returned unharmed and Team Rocket is sent packing. Back at the lab, Professor Juniper gets a call from her father, Cedric, who informs them that the White Ruins—an archeological site that may have information about the Legendary Pokémon Reshiram—have been discovered near Icirrus City! Of course our heroes want to go check it out, so, after saying goodbye to Natasha and the professor, they board a ferry bound for Aspertia City. Professor Juniper has advised them to look up a Gym Leader named Cheren who has just opened up a Gym there, and so it’s off to new adventures and guaranteed excitement!

| Traveling on a ship, headed for the White Ruins and Professor Juniper’s father, Cedric, our heroes meet an unusual young man known as N. N tells them he considers all Pokémon his friends, and he claims he can hear the inner voices of Pokémon. He’s also quite pleased with the strong bond he senses between Ash and Pikachu.
Ash mentions that they’re on their way to investigate the Legendary Pokémon Reshiram, and when N seems interested, Ash tells him about the time he saw Zekrom. N launches into a passionate description of his goals—to learn the mysteries of why Pokémon exist in this world, to meet Reshiram and Zekrom, and to make Pokémon’s lives better. This sounds good to Ash...but it quickly becomes clear that he and N don’t see entirely eye to eye when N voices his disapproval of Pokémon battles, saying he doesn’t like the idea of forcing friends to fight each other. Meanwhile, Team Rocket has yet another sinister plot to steal Pikachu for the Boss. They first lure Axew away from our heroes while Ash and Iris are having a practice battle, and Pikachu is not far behind. Soon, both Pokémon are in Team Rocket’s clutches, but with the assistance of N, they are soon freed—though not before an attack from James’s Amoonguss stuns poor Pikachu. Ash isn’t sure what to do, but N has a plan: he brings everyone to the bow of the ship and calls to his friends, and then two wild Alomomola leap out of the water and use Refresh to heal Pikachu! The ship is docking at Castelia City, where N has to go—but he assures our heroes that they will meet him again. As he leaves, he considers what seeing Zekrom might mean for Ash...a life-changing experience indeed!

| Our heroes have finally arrived in Aspertia City, and on Professor Juniper’s advice, they want to visit the new Gym—which doubles as a schoolhouse where Trainers-to-be can learn all about Pokémon! They meet a young teacher named Cheren, who also happens to be the brand-new Gym Leader. Ash wastes no time in challenging Cheren to a battle, but it has to be an exhibition match because the battlefield isn’t finished yet.
They make plans to battle later that afternoon, and in the meantime, Cheren shows our heroes around the school. During the tour, Axew wanders off to explore on its own, and when Pikachu goes after it, they both get into some very noisy trouble—which is broadcast through the school’s speaker system. The sudden loud noise frightens the Pokémon living in the school’s Pokémon house, and they escape through an open door! Everyone splits up to look for them, and after a few complications, Ash rounds up some well-camouflaged Sunflora, Iris retrieves several mischievous Minccino from the school’s kitchen, and Cilan and Pansage manage to get a reluctant flock of Ducklett out of the pool. Cheren takes a head count of the Pokémon as they are returned to the Pokémon house, and realizes there’s still one Shinx missing. Our heroes track it down, but the Shinx is frightened, and when two students corner it in an attempt to bring it back, it attacks them! Cheren dives in to protect them and calm the startled Shinx, and the two students tearfully confess that they were trying to catch it because they’re the ones who left the door to the Pokémon house open. All’s well that ends well, and it’s time for Ash and Cheren’s battle! With the students cheering him on, Cheren demonstrates formidable skill with his Herdier, and though Ash and Oshawott get in some powerful attacks, the battle goes to the new Gym Leader. Cheren thanks Ash for helping him to bolster his confidence, and resolves to stop overthinking his many jobs as a Gym Leader, teacher, and role model for his students. And saying goodbye, our heroes are off once again to the White Ruins!

| In a dark laboratory, the scientist Colress experiments on a terrified Galvantula, attempting to increase its power using electromagnetic waves. It seems he is part of a mysterious organization called Team Plasma, which seeks to control the Unova region...
Meanwhile, our heroes are heading for the White Ruins via Floccesy Town when they are attacked by three angry Amoonguss! Ash, Iris, and Cilan fight them off and then take them to the Pokémon Center, where they find the place is packed! Nurse Joy explains that many of the mountain Pokémon have been coming into town and attacking people for no apparent reason, and a Trainer mentions that he’s seen some strangers hanging out at an abandoned observatory near the peak. Ash and the others set out to investigate, and they’re headed up the mountain when a bearded fellow advises them not to go any farther because it’s too dangerous. He’s quickly proven right when all the Pokémon in the area—including Pikachu and Axew—suddenly turn on the group and start attacking! The man produces a device that shields the Pokémon from the harmful EM waves, and as they calm down, he removes his disguise: it’s Detective Looker of the International Police, last seen chasing down Team Galactic in the Sinnoh region, and now on the trail of Team Plasma! He’s tracked them to the abandoned observatory, and naturally, our heroes decide to come along and help. When they confront Team Plasma inside the observatory, Colress decides that Pikachu would be the perfect subject for his experiments. It’s a tense moment as Pikachu struggles against the control of Colress’s machine...but the bond between Ash and Pikachu is stronger than any EM wave, and Pikachu breaks free. Colress is marveling at this development when he notices a strange device plugged into his machine, stealing his data: it’s Team Rocket! They grab some of the equipment, which frees all the mountain Pokémon from the scientist’s influence, and flee in their balloon. But a missile from Team Plasma’s airship sends them blasting off again. Looker realizes that the remaining equipment is set to self-destruct, and quickly gets everyone out of the building before the observatory blows up, destroying all evidence of Team Plasma’s presence and Colress’s experiments. He vows to get to the bottom of Team Plasma’s villainous plot, and Ash and the others wish him well as he departs and they resume their journey to the White Ruins.

| On their way to the White Ruins, Ash, Iris, and Cilan meet a wayward Mareep and an Ampharos who’s trying to get it back to its flock—without much luck. They soon meet a girl named Ellie, who brings them to Floccesy Ranch, where her grandfather raises the Pokémon. Ampharos is the guardian of the Mareep flock, but it lacks confidence, and the Mareep don’t pay much attention to its directions.
Ellie says she’s been trying to teach Ampharos a more powerful move, ThunderPunch, to give it a bit more authority, but it hasn’t been going well. Iris remembers that her Dragonite knows ThunderPunch and asks it to be Ampharos’s coach! Dragonite is reluctant at first but quickly warms to the task, showing a surprising degree of patience when Ampharos just isn’t getting it. The Team Rocket trio are lurking nearby as usual, plotting to steal the Mareep to power their Pikachu-catching machine. They lure a few away with an electric beam, and when Ellie realizes they’re missing, our heroes go with her to look. But they quickly run into a dense fogbank and have to give up the search—until Ampharos uses its light to cut through the fog, revealing Team Rocket and the missing Mareep! The battle begins, and Ampharos finally masters ThunderPunch, sending Jessie, James, and Meowth blasting off again. Now that Ampharos has proven itself and rescued the Mareep, they’ve started to respect it, and Ellie’s grandfather decides Ampharos is a proper guardian after all. Knowing the ranch is in good hands, our heroes resume their journey to the White Ruins!

| Team Plasma is still working on its evil plan: catching Pokémon for use as research subjects with the ultimate goal of world domination. Two henchmen, Schwarz and Weiss, are holding a Braviary captive as they make their way back to headquarters, but they soon encounter a roadblock—set up by N! He uses the distraction to break into their truck and free Braviary, and the two of them escape—but they’ve both been injured by the grunts, and Braviary has a hidden tracking device attached to its neck.
Meanwhile, our heroes are on their way to the White Ruins when they come across the injured pair. They all go to the Pokémon Center, where Nurse Joy bandages Braviary’s injured wing. During a mysterious blackout caused by Team Plasma, N discovers the tracking device and realizes he must get Braviary out of there quickly! He explains his plan to Ash and the others, and they leap into action. Schwarz and Weiss chase after the tracking device’s signal, but they quickly discover it’s just N acting as a decoy to lure them away while Ash, Iris, and Cilan get Braviary to safety! But Braviary senses that N is in danger, and keeps struggling and calling until our heroes figure out what’s going on. They return to the scene just in time—N is under attack from the henchmen’s Pokémon! Ash knows that N dislikes Pokémon battles, but there seems to be no choice here, and a fierce battle soon ensues: Zangoose and Seviper on the villains’ side against Ash’s Pikachu and Iris’s Excadrill—with a little help from the wild Braviary, who turns the tide in our heroes’ favor. Schwarz and Weiss flee, promising to catch Braviary another day. It’s finally time for Braviary to return to the wild, and time for our heroes to resume their journey—but this time, N is going with them!

| On their way to the White Ruins, our heroes (accompanied by N) have just arrived in Virbank City when they see smoke and rush to investigate. But as Ash recruits Oshawott to put out the fire, they are stopped by an insistent Watchog wearing a red scarf. It turns out the fire is part of a drill conducted by the Pokémon Harbor Patrol, a team dedicated to dealing with any disasters that happen around Virbank City’s extensive harbor. Under the direction of Captain Halsey, Dewott and two Frillish run the rescue operations and put out fires, and Watchog serves as lookout.
But Watchog seems upset, and N figures out why: it wants to be involved in the rescues too! Unfortunately, it fails the firefighting section of the aptitude tests, so Halsey asks it to stay as lookout for now. N speaks up, saying he doesn’t approve of Pokémon being “forced” to rescue people at all, and as he and Halsey are arguing, the captain gets a call about a real emergency: a fire at the Virbank Complex, where a local kindergarten class is visiting! Everyone rushes to help, while the Team Rocket trio, lurking as always, decide the chaos is the perfect cover to steal Pikachu. As Ash, Iris, Cilan, and N guide the children and workers to safety and Watchog stands guard, Halsey, Dewott, and the Frillish head into the complex to put out the fire. But when Team Rocket appears and a battle begins, a second fire starts outside, while inside, the fire doors slam shut automatically, trapping Halsey and his team! Ash and Oshawott try to fight the fire, but they can’t do it alone. Iris asks Excadrill to dig a tunnel to reach Halsey, but when Excadrill runs up against hard bedrock, N has an idea. He asks Watchog to use its remarkable sensing skills to detect the rocky places in the ground. With some teamwork, Watchog, N, Iris, and Excadrill manage to get Halsey and the others out of the building. They quickly put out the second fire, and Halsey says it’s time to rethink his decision about keeping Watchog off the rescue team. N says he also has some rethinking to do, because Watchog has proven to him that some Pokémon help people because they want to!

| Continuing their journey to the White Ruins, our heroes (traveling with N) come across the Kanto Fair: a festival celebrating the sights and sounds of the Kanto region! Of course, since Ash is from Kanto originally, this takes him right back to memories of his home. And when our heroes see Professor Oak’s presentation on the three Kanto Pokémon available to beginning Trainers—Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle—memories of Ash’s own early Pokémon journey come flooding back.
Ash tells everyone the story of how he first met Charmander. Just like Tepig, Charmander was abandoned by its original Trainer. Ash rescued it, and soon it became part of his Pokémon family! However, when it evolved into Charmeleon, it stopped taking commands from Ash, doing whatever it wanted. But Ash never gave up on his beloved Pokémon, and soon it evolved into an awesome and fearsome Charizard! The two of them traveled together for some time, until their journey took them to the Charicific Valley, where many Charizard engage in intensive training against each other, and Ash took the opportunity for his Charizard to become stronger. Although the two have reunited on several occasions, Ash now wants to see his old friend again, and everyone else can’t wait to meet it! So a Pokémon exchange is made with Professor Oak, and Charizard comes for a visit! When it meets Iris’s Dragonite, sparks fly immediately, and the two of them start trying to pick a fight—and rather than trying to stop them, Ash decides to turn it into a proper battle! It’s clear that Charizard has been training hard in the Charicific Valley, and both Pokémon show just how strong they are! N calls the battle to an end, and observes that the two Pokémon have found real respect for each other. Ash asks if Charizard would like to rejoin him on his journey, and the answer is an enthusiastic yes! So, it’s off once again to the White Ruins, but now with Charizard along, reunited with our heroes once again!

| As our heroes and N continue their journey, Team Plasma is fine-tuning its evil plan: to target and control any Pokémon while elevating its rage and attack power to the maximum, thanks to Dr. Colress’s diabolical machine. | N has been injured in a battle with Team Plasma, and as our stunned heroes watch, two mysterious women appear and take him to a pool in the forest, where he is fully healed. Ash, Iris, and Cilan soon learn that N and the two women, Concordia and Anthea, have been living in a secret hideaway, where they take care of Pokémon that have been mistreated by people.
N describes how, as a young boy, he lived in a mansion with Anthea and Concordia—and with Ghetsis, the leader of Team Plasma, who never allowed him to go outside. Ghetsis explained to N that because of his ability to hear the inner voices of Pokémon, he was destined to become the leader of Team Plasma and save the world’s Pokémon from selfish people. But, N says, Ghetsis was lying. He only wanted to use N in a ceremony to summon the Legendary Pokémon Reshiram—but when Reshiram showed up, it was very angry at the deceit and unleashed its fury on Team Plasma! In the aftermath, Anthea and Concordia rescued N and made their way to the hidden house where they live now. Now, N and his companions still agree that people are not to be trusted to protect the well-being of Pokémon, and they believe Pokémon need to be kept away from people. However, our heroes are determined to prove them wrong, and Concordia and Anthea are soon amazed to see the previously mistreated Pokémon warm up to the young Trainers! Soon, Team Plasma’s goons manage to track N to the secret house. Ash and friends battle them to allow N and his companions to get the injured Pokémon to safety, and Team Plasma is held at bay once again. Still, N, Anthea, and Concordia remain convinced that people and Pokémon cannot coexist, and so they bid farewell to our heroes and vanish into the fog. Ash and friends wonder if they will ever see N again...

| After bidding farewell to N and his companions, our heroes have found themselves within sight of Dragonspiral Tower. The White Ruins are close by, and Ash can’t wait to get there! But first, they must sort out a pressing problem: Pignite’s Flamethrower has gotten very weak, and after some investigation, they discover something lodged in its nose. Jumping up and down doesn’t shake it loose, and even a scary spin in the sky courtesy of Charizard isn’t enough to banish this pesky problem. Finally, Iris tries tickling Pignite’s nose with a blade of grass, and it sneezes out the culprit: a shell from an earlier Bullet Seed attack!
As they’re busy with that, Team Rocket and Team Plasma are busy double-crossing each other. Jessie and James break into Team Plasma’s lab to steal Colress’s Pokémon-controlling device, and when all the henchmen chase after them, Meowth approaches the good doctor and invites him to join Team Rocket! Colress seems intrigued, but first he wants to use Meowth in the final round of his experiments. Meowth agrees, planning to use his specially trained concentration skills to ward off the mind control...but the machine proves too powerful, and Meowth falls under Team Plasma’s influence. The machine even makes him attack Jessie and James when they return from their decoy mission! But they manage to fight through Meowth’s impressive cyclone of Fury Swipes and reconnect with their partner, and the three of them escape. Ghetsis isn’t happy that Team Plasma hasn’t recaptured N yet, but he’s discovered something that might lead them to Reshiram—and it’s at the White Ruins. Jessie, James, and Meowth overhear this tidbit thanks to a listening device they planted at Team Plasma’s lab...so it seems our heroes, Team Plasma, and Team Rocket are all headed to the same place!

| Outside Dragonspiral Tower, Ash, Cilan, and Iris meet Professor Cedric Juniper’s assistant Nick, who offers them a ride to meet the professor at the White Ruins. En route, he tells them the excavation team may have made a fantastic discovery, but won’t say any more.
Inside the ruins, our heroes are reunited with Cedric, who shows them a door covered in mysterious symbols. He moves a few panels around, and the door comes open! There, in front of their awestruck eyes, is the Light Stone—an item straight out of legend that is said to be Reshiram in a different form! The professor picks up the stone, and it bursts into flame in his hands, sending a bright blast of light straight up into the air and leaving him unharmed. From a distance, N sees the light and senses Reshiram’s presence. He makes his way to the ruins, surprising Professor Juniper and the others, and demands to know what the professor plans to do with the stone. Cedric explains that the Light Stone and Reshiram are part of his life’s work, and says he plans to investigate the stone thoroughly. N finds this unacceptable and leaps into action, grabbing the case with the stone in it and running away. Ash chases after him, but the ground gives way under his feet. N goes back to help him—even dropping the case to grab Ash’s hand—but finds himself falling as well, and the two of them land on soft sand deep underground. Back on the surface, the others are trying to figure out how to get Ash and N out when they get some unexpected visitors: Team Plasma! The villains also saw the blast of light from the stone and followed it to the ruins, planning to get their hands on both N and the Light Stone. They’re prepared to attack Iris, Cilan, and Cedric when Nick reveals his true identity: it’s Looker, from the International Police! He corners Team Plasma’s Aldith and says reinforcements are on their way, but Colress activates his now perfected machine and takes control of the Golurk who have been helping with the excavation, turning them against our heroes! Jessie, James, and Meowth have tracked Team Plasma to the site, but they decide to sit back and wait for the dust to settle before leaping in to steal the Light Stone and Pikachu. Underground, N and Ash are having an intense conversation about the relationships between people and Pokémon. N still thinks Pokémon would be better off without people, but Ash insists that he just wants to learn more about Pokémon and be really good friends with them—including Reshiram! Then the two hear the sounds of battle above them and decide they have to find a way out. Who will claim the Light Stone when this battle is over?

| Team Plasma continues to implement its evil plan to steal the Light Stone and secure N. But Cilan and Iris are battling back hard, while Ash and N are trapped underground. N can sense the disturbance on the surface, as he hears the inner voices of his Pokémon friends screaming in distress. Ash decides they have to get out of there and help, and recalls one of Professor Cedric Juniper’s adventure rules: Never give up until the very end! And as N watches in astonishment, Ash brings out the rest of his Pokémon, and they all work together to dig a tunnel to the surface as N marvels at the bond between them.
Meanwhile, above ground, Colress has again activated his Pokémon control device, forcing Cilan and Iris to return Crustle and Dragonite to their Poké Balls so the machine can’t control them. This leaves our heroes vulnerable, and Team Plasma moves in to capture them! Aldith wants Colress to send the controlled Pokémon underground after their targets—and just at that moment, Krookodile bursts through the ground, followed quickly by Charizard, Ash, and N, holding the Light Stone! Colress refocuses his device on Ash’s Pokémon, and Ash scrambles to return them all to safety...all except Pikachu, who has a well-known dislike of its own Poké Ball. Colress’s machine takes control, and a growling Pikachu turns to attack our heroes. Ash gently attempts to make his best buddy recognize him, but it’s not working, and Pikachu unleashes a full-power Thunderbolt on Ash at close range, knocking him unconscious. Desperately, N offers to give himself up—along with the Light Stone—if Colress turns off the device and sets Pikachu free. Colress agrees, N is taken into Team Plasma’s custody, and Pikachu comes back to its senses and sadly cuddles up to the wounded Ash. Ghetsis soon arrives and reveals his ultimate goal: awakening the Legendary Pokémon Reshiram from the Light Stone and taking control of its mind! Can our heroes stop this villainous scheme before it’s too late?

| Team Plasma’s quest to awaken and control Reshiram continues, while our shackled heroes watch helplessly. Axew sneaks out of Iris’s hair, where it’s been safely concealed, and manages to free Iris and Cilan from the metal bands that hold them. Then, Concordia and Anthea appear from their mysterious fog and ask N to come back into hiding with them. But N vows to stay in the “real” world and fight for his ideals. Dr. Colress’s device has taken control of their Gothitelle and Gardevoir, along with the newly awakened Reshiram, and things are looking very bleak indeed.
Now is the moment for Team Rocket to step in! They’ve been watching the goings-on from a safe distance, but when Looker spots them and asks for their help in destroying the device and freeing all the controlled Pokémon, they agree. Meowth jumps in to distract the other members of Team Plasma while Ash and Pikachu go after the device. Colress tries desperately to take control of Pikachu, but Pikachu’s willpower—and its bond with Ash—proves too strong, and Pikachu aims a Thunderbolt at Reshiram to break it free as well. The device is destroyed, and Team Plasma is defeated, thanks to an unusual bit of teamwork between our heroes and Team Rocket! Reshiram is free, but it’s still very angry. N speaks to it in an attempt to calm it down, and it soon becomes clear that he’s changed his tune when he tells Reshiram that people and Pokémon can live in harmony and work together. He promises Reshiram that he’ll keep fighting for an ideal world for everyone, people and Pokémon alike, and seems pleased with Reshiram’s answer. Iris wants to know what the Legendary Pokémon told him, but Ash disagrees—he wants to meet Reshiram again someday and hear its answer for himself!

- This is the first TPCi season to use two subtitles and the first season since Season 6 (whose first 12 episodes use the Master Quest subtitle due to taking place in Johto) to do so.
- This is the only one of such seasons not to change the opening theme to a different one in the middle of the season.
- Like the three 4Kids seasons that used two subtitles, this one is named by the second subtitle (the one which is used on the later episodes) on the official site and Australian DVD releases.
- The Team Rocket trio returns to being comedic but they still retain their competent nature and have access to the Team Rocket technology.
- This is the first season to not have any of the main characters Pokémon evolve.
