A treasure-hunter startles Ash and friends as he emerges suddenly from the sea, boasting of what he believes to be his first great underwater find.  Excited to help uncover any Pokémon mystery themselves, our heroes quickly volunteer to join in the excavation, guided by the ancient Pokémon, Relicanth, which this diver insists will lead them to riches. Not to be outdone in greed, Team Rocket follows close behind, watching for the perfect moment to attack as their young nemeses bravely swim deeper into the sea.

As Ash and friends continue their journey to the next gym, they pass two islands, home to the two Pokémon Gorebyss and Huntail.  Here, they learn that these Pokémon are both evolved forms of Clamperl, but that only Gorebyss seem to come from one island while only Huntail emerge from the other.  This subtle distinction has created a stinging rivalry between the two islands, with residents of each claiming their dominant Pokémon to be superior.  As Team Rocket descends on the islands, our heroes must both defend the Pokémon from these villains and free locals of their delusions about Pokémon evolution, which are causing so much discord.

A slightly miscalculated attack by Pikachu lands Ash and friends in the sea, far from shore.  Their relief at being rescued by a colossal submarine is quickly quelled as they realize the vessel belongs to Team Magma. Once inside the sub, Ash and friends learn that both Teams Magma and Aqua are plotting to take control of Groudon and Kyogre and by their power gain control of the entire planet.  Central to their plans are two mysterious jewels, which allow one to manipulate these ancient Pokémon.  Ash and friends realize they must act quickly to stop this evil attempt at world domination, but when Pikachu somehow bonds with one of these mystical jewels, even our heroes are at a loss as to how they might both free Pikachu and dispatch with these evil crime syndicates.

Finally able to begin his gym battle in the Mossdeep Gym, Ash is wary of his first simultaneous battle against two gym leaders, but finds them to be far less a challenge than expected. Jessie, James, and Meowth are quickly dispatched, but when Ash and the trainers rejoin their battle—as though fighting off these villains was just the warm-up they’d needed—the twin gym leaders exhibit far better teamwork than before, promising to give Ash a run for his money.

Looking for a quiet place to train, Ash and friends reach an untouched island, once inhabited by ancient Pokémon that have since become extinct. While his friends casually dismiss his claim, Max sets out to find this “extinct” Pokémon and salvage his reputation. Elsewhere, Ash, May, and Brock slowly come to believe Max’s story as they meet scientists who claim they are able to revive fossils of the extinct Pokémon Cradily, Lileep, Anorith and Armaldo.  Meanwhile, armed with a very eco-unfriendly ship, Team Rocket attempts to steal these very same anachronous Pokémon. Team Rocket manages to convince the Onix king who rules over a forest community of Rock-type Pokémon that Ash and friends have come to capture every last one of his subjects. Ash and friends, who were simply making their way to the Battle Arena, are thus surprised and confused when hordes of Geodude and Graveler suddenly attack them without provocation. Our heroes learn soon enough of Team Rocket’s part in their misfortune, but as they struggle to convince the Onix king that their intentions are good, Team Rocket begins capturing the Rock-type Pokémon for themselves.

When Ash and friends step squarely into a trap, they’re soon surprised to learn it was set not by Team Rocket but by a man bent on capturing a Jigglypuff that lives nearby. They further learn that he’s been camped out in these mountains for the better part of six months in order to fulfill a promise to his daughter to catch this Pokémon for her as a birthday gift.  Unable to convince him that his daughter would prefer to have her father there on her birthday even without the promised Jigglypuff, Ash and friends commit to helping the father keep his promise. Time is short, though, as his daughter’s birthday is the very next day.

Our heroes and Team Rocket independently wander into either half of a restaurant left by a prominent chef to his two daughters.  Since inheriting the restaurant, the daughters bickered constantly, one emphasizing her Sneasel’s impeccable cooking and the other focusing on the performance aspects of the business, with help from her Mr. Mime. These arguments eventually led them to split the restaurant into two, each sister doing business as she chose. The results, however, as both Ash and friends and Team Rocket quickly learn, are less than ideal. Can our heroes somehow bring these sisters to reconcile, saving a house literally divided against itself?
