XY001
After a quick introduction to Serena, a budding young Trainer who lives with her mother in the Kalos region, we find Ash, Pikachu, and Alexa on a plane, preparing to land in Kalos. Saying that Ash is excited would be quite an understatement! The thought of meeting all the new Pokémon and having lots of exciting Gym battles has our hero beside himself with joyous anticipation.

But when Alexa discovers that her younger sister (who's a Gym Leader) isn't at her Gym in Santalune City, Ash wonders where he should try for his first badge. Alexa directs him to the Gym located in the Prism Tower, right there in Lumiose City! Ash and Pikachu arrive at the Gym, brimming with confidence and energy. But they are greeted by a robot who, upon discovering Ash hasn't yet won a single badge in Kalos, promptly throws them out with a bang!

Outside, a Trainer named Clemont and his little sister, Bonnie, manage to catch Ash and Pikachu as they come flying out of the tower. After introductions all around, Ash challenges Clemont to a battle on the spot, and he agrees. With Pikachu up against Clemont's new Pokémon Bunnelby, it proves to be a battle of power and strategy, until it is rudely interrupted by none other than Jessie, James, and Meowth of Team Rocket, who have followed Ash all the way to Kalos!

The villains proclaim that although Pikachu is their first Pokémon-catching priority, the wealth of prime Pokémon in the Kalos region is too great to ignore! As a new battle begins, Team Rocket's Wobbuffet proves to be quite a powerful Pokémon, thanks to its Mirror Coat move, which returns special attacks to the sender with double the power! But a Froakie has been observing the events from the sidelines, and now rushes in to help. When it flings the protective Frubbles that cover its back—which isn't technically a move, and therefore not affected by Wobbuffet's Mirror Coat—Team Rocket is sent blasting off again, but Froakie is injured in the process. Ash knows they need to get Froakie to a Pokémon Center right away, but Bonnie suggests it would be faster to go to Professor Sycamore's research lab.

So off they go: Ash, Pikachu, Clemont, Bonnie, and the injured Froakie, ushering in a new round of adventures and excitement!

Our heroes and Team Rocket both seek shelter from a downpour in an old, abandoned mansion. When lights come on and doors close behind them, they’re convinced the mansion is haunted—and because neither of the two groups knows the other is there, they keep scaring each other with their startled screams!

When our heroes explore the house and encounter a mysterious being with glowing eyes, Ash, Serena, and Clemont are terrified—but Bonnie runs after it to find out what’s going on, and ends up making a new friend: a Psychic-type Pokémon named Espurr! She realizes that Espurr has been responsible for all the strange happenings in the house, and that it’s keeping them from leaving for some reason. Espurr shows her the lovely pendant it’s wearing, and points out the same pendant in a portrait of an older woman, but Bonnie can’t figure out what it wants.

Ash, Serena, and Clemont go searching for Bonnie and run into Team Rocket instead. They accuse each other of being responsible for the “haunting,” but when they meet up with Bonnie and Espurr, they quickly figure out what’s going on, and Meowth offers to translate for Espurr so it will let them leave the house.

It seems the woman in the painting used to take care of the wild Espurr, feeding and playing with it when it came to her mansion. She even let it wear the precious pendant, a gift from her husband. But when it came back to return the pendant, the woman was gone and the house was empty. It’s been waiting in the house ever since, hoping its friend will come back for her pendant—and now it wants our heroes to help find her!

Jessie, James, and Meowth have another idea: they want to catch Espurr instead. They attack, but it quickly sends the villains blasting off again. Ash and Clemont are promising Espurr that they’ll help it find the woman who lived in the mansion when the new owner of the house arrives! Her name is Elise, and the woman who took care of Espurr was her grandmother, Lacy. She tells Espurr the sad news that Grandma Lacy passed away, and offers to take it to the cemetery so it can say goodbye to her. Elise also announces her plans to renovate the old house and move in herself, and says Espurr is welcome to come and play any time. It’s a bittersweet ending to Espurr’s long quest, as our heroes say their farewells and continue their journey to Cyllage City.

While our heroes are exploring Reflection Cave, named for its mirrorlike crystal walls, Ash’s own reflection pulls Pikachu through one of the mirrors! Ash leaps after it and finds himself in another world, with a Clemont, Bonnie, and Serena very different from the ones he knows.

After our Ash helps Mirror Ash drive off Team Rocket and reclaim his own Pikachu, Mirror Clemont tells him of a frightening legend—people who pass through one of the mirrors in Reflection Cave must return to their own world before sunset or risk being stuck on the wrong side of the mirror forever! Ash hurries back to the mirror he first stepped through, where his friends are waiting on the other side, and all of them focus on reuniting with each other.

Thanks to the strong bonds of friendship, Ash and Pikachu are pulled back to their own world just in time!

Professor Sycamore’s summer camp is about to conclude, and Team Rocket decides this is the perfect time to spring into action. But, shortly after the villains throw off their camp cook disguises and try to steal everyone’s Pokémon, they get sent blasting off once again

The scheduled events resume with Team Froakie (Ash, Serena, and Clemont) and Team Squirtle (Tierno, Shauna, and Trevor) facing off in the finals of the Team Battle competition, where the three members of each team have to work together and combine their Pokémon’s moves. As before, Tierno’s rhythmic battling style poses quite a challenge! Team Froakie manages to come out on top, but Ash is so impressed that he asks Tierno for some special training.

The next morning, it’s time for the friends to go their separate ways, but they make plans to meet up again soon. Now, our heroes are off once more to Shalour City!

Our heroes have arrived in Shalour City, but the Gym is inside the Tower of Mastery, which sits on an island with no apparent way to get there. Korrina comes to meet them and advises patience, which gives Ash some extra time to train! His Pokémon have really picked up on Tierno’s rhythmic battle style, but it seems Ash doesn’t quite have the dancing skills to pull it off.

Low tide reveals the path to the island, and our heroes cross, eager for a Gym battle—but first, Gurkinn has a history lesson for them. He tells how one of his ancestors discovered Mega Evolution along with his partner, Lucario, and mentions the family’s treasured Scroll of Secrets...which catches Team Rocket’s attention. The villains try to steal the scroll, but Korrina and her Mega Lucario quickly send them blasting off again!

As thanks, Gurkinn decides to let his granddaughter and our heroes see the Scroll of Secrets. Much to their dismay, the “secrets” turn out to be his own common-sense rules for life, rather than any new information about Mega Evolution. But there’s no time for disappointment—it’s time for Ash and Korrina’s Gym battle!

Ash’s Shalour City Gym battle against Korrina is under way! The battle begins as Ash’s Hawlucha faces off against Korrina’s Mienfoo. He tries to use the rhythmic battle style he learned from Tierno, but it’s not going so well. Finally, he remembers Serena’s observation that he has his own unique style, and decides to battle like himself instead!

With this change of tactics, Hawlucha wins. Ash then sends in Fletchinder, who quickly takes down Korrina’s Machoke. The Gym Leader has just one Pokémon left, and of course it’s her partner Lucario, who Mega Evolves and knocks out Fletchinder and then Hawlucha in short order. But our hero’s unique battling style shines, and in the final matchup, Pikachu defeats Mega Lucario!

Ash wins the Rumble Badge, and the gang is off to Coumarine City for his next Gym battle!

En route to Coumarine City, our heroes meet a Trainer named Blake and his Meowstic, a male with a beautiful blue coat. Among the trees, Chespin spies a female Meowstic and runs off in pursuit, followed by Bonnie, who is upset at Clemont for insisting that she eat her vegetables.

When three Beedrill attack Bonnie and Chespin, Blake’s older brother Heath (the female Meowstic’s Trainer) rescues them, and everyone goes off to the brothers’ sprawling mansion to get some first aid for Bonnie. Then, Blake and Heath’s father challenges them to a treasure hunt to decide who will inherit the mansion!

Our heroes split up to help, but the treasure eludes everyone...until the brothers remember a tree with beautiful flowers that they discovered together when they were younger. Everyone runs to the spot, but they’re attacked by an Exploud! It turns out Exploud is their father’s Pokémon, and he sent it there to get the brothers to battle side by side, as they did when they were young.

Blake and Heath make amends, which inspires Clemont and Bonnie to do the same. After saying their goodbyes, our heroes are off once again to Coumarine City!

Team Rocket stalks a Salamence and attaches a device that’s supposed to make it sleep, but something goes wrong and the Salamence runs wild! Meanwhile, our heroes have stopped at a Pokémon Center, where Nurse Joy is overwhelmed by the number of Pokémon arriving for treatment, injured by the very same Salamence. Even worse, her assistant Wigglytuff is new to the job and having some trouble.

Jessie and James, disguised as ambulance drivers, arrive on the scene to catch Pikachu and Wigglytuff. On their way out, they run straight into the Salamence! Nurse Joy steps in to protect her assistant, but Wigglytuff overcomes its fears and walks right up to Salamence, immune to the flurry of Dragon-type attacks. Wigglytuff uses a powerful Heal Pulse, which calms the raging Pokémon and saves the day!

Team Rocket’s device is removed, and a grateful Salamence quickly sends the villains flying. Wigglytuff’s future at the Pokémon Center looks bright, as our heroes say their goodbyes and continue their journey!

On the way to Laverre City, Serena and Bonnie look up their daily fortunes in Serena’s guidebook, which predicts a bad day for both of them. Meanwhile, the Team Rocket trio, who have just gotten their hands on a berry bonanza, spot our heroes and swoop down to attack! In the ensuing battle, some of the berries end up in our heroes’ hands. Then, when three angry Pangoro charge out of the woods, everyone runs for cover and gets separated—and Bonnie ends up with Meowth!
The two of them bicker at first but eventually decide to cooperate. After Bonnie gets hit with a Spore attack that makes her sleep, Meowth and Dedenne work together to find the berry that will heal her, and soon she is feeling fine.
When our heroes are finally reunited, the angry Pangoro reappear. According to Meowth’s translation, the Pangoro think our heroes stole their food, and that’s why they attacked. But when Jessie and James show up (still carrying a big bag of berries), it quickly becomes clear who the real culprits are! The Pangoro send the villains blasting off again, our heroes return the berries, and Bonnie tells Serena that her day didn’t turn out so bad after all!

On their journey, Ash, Serena, Clemont, and Bonnie come across a Gourgeist Festival, where everyone dresses in Pokémon costumes. Naturally, our heroes want to join the fun!

Meanwhile, Team Rocket, also in costume, gets an invitation to the castle from Count Pumpka. His Prince Pumpkaboo has developed quite an interest in Jessie’s Pumpkaboo. Jessie seizes the opportunity and tells the count that some terrible villains have stolen her Pikachu—namely, our heroes! She suggests that she might trade her Pumpkaboo to the count if he helps rescue Pikachu.

The count’s steward confronts Ash and the others, demanding that they return Pikachu to its rightful Trainer—but because Pikachu is wearing a Psyduck costume and Chespin is dressed as Pikachu, he ends up grabbing Chespin by mistake!

Back at the castle, Jessie reluctantly agrees to the trade. But when the trade is complete, Jessie’s Pumpkaboo evolves into a Gourgeist, and suddenly Prince Pumpkaboo isn’t interested anymore! Jessie gets her Gourgeist back, Team Rocket is revealed and promptly sent blasting off again, Chespin and Clemont are reunited, and all’s well that ends well!
