For the variant appearing in the game, see Piers.

Piers is a character appearing in the "Sword & Shield Chapter" of Pokémon Adventures, who is the Gym Leader of the Spikemuth Stadium in the Galar region.

Appearance[]

This section, or a part of it, has been transcluded from Piers; any changes involving it should be made there instead. /

Piers is a slim, tired-looking young man with pallid skin. His droopy eyes are cyan-colored and he wears blue-gray eyeshadow around them. He has angular black eyebrows. There are lines in between his eyes, which is probably due to the fact that he is constantly furrowing his eyebrows. He has long, spiky, black-and-white hair that covers one side of his face and is tied in three ponytails. His ponytail has an alternating striped pattern. He dons a black and magenta shorts jumpsuit with a cropped white jacket on top that has magenta diagonal stripes on the torso area and spikes on the wrist area. He wears a thumbless black glove on his right hand and is wearing a collar similar to his sister's, only with a gray band. He dons a metal wristband and a white glove on his left hand, and a belt with Poké Balls hanging from it. His shoes are gray with spikes pointing backward on the back of two bands around his shins. Under the shoes are black socks that might be connected to the bands but it is not confirmed. The heels of these shoes are a darker gray and shaped as skulls. The toes of the shoe are the same color.

Personality[]

Piers is a Gym Leader, who lets his Gym Trainers act as they please, knowing they won't listen to him. He also considers his town, Spikemuth, as a person where alternative people go to, which do not like the glamorous lifestyle of other cities. It is also why he did not let the stadium be moved to a Power Spot, and this got into a small conflict with Chairman Rose, which shows Piers' rebellious side. He also likes to tease people a bit.

Etymology[]

Piers's name is likely derived from the word 'pierce', as piercings are popular in the punk rock style. 'Pierce' can also be used to describe a loud sound (such as "piercing music"), referring to his passion for singing. His name could also mean 'rock', which refers to the genre of music he sings.

His Japanese name likely comes from 'nezumi', Japanese for 'rat' or 'mouse', both of which are nocturnal creatures. It may also come from "nezu", the Japanese name for juniper.

Biography[]

Piers was a famous punk-rock musician from Spikemuth, who recorded a number of songs. He performed on many concerts. He was notorious, however, to have sent some of his Pokémon to attack the audience.[1] To have more of the towns gain publicity, Chairman Rose asked of Gym Leaders to move their stadiums to a Power Spot, so that the Pokémon could Dynamax. Piers refused to have such spectacles, and didn't want to have a live broadcast, either. Despite the conflict, Chairman Rose smiled, for he liked Galar cities shiny or not.[2]

People that did not like Piers much began to spread lies based on suspicions. Piers' fans eventually clashed with such people, which made Piers concerned about his sister, Marnie, who later went on the Gym Challenge, so she would not suffer. To protect such people, a rule was enforced so challengers' privacy was kept secret.[3]

Sword & Shield arc[]

After encountering Chairman Rose and Oleana, Raihan had doubts about their intentions. It was why he considered calling the "real rebel"—Piers—to deal with this situation.[4] Piers also got a visit from Opal about Bede, for the latter was concerned the way Chairman Rose simply disqualified himm, rather than giving him a new chance.

Raihan went to Spikemuth, where he was surprised to see the city being closed off. An Obstagoon pushed him to the place Piers was waiting for him. Raihan wondered why was the city closed off, to which Piers explained that his Gym Trainers barred Gym Challengers' entrance so they would not be able to challenge Piers, and this would technically make Spikemuth's Gym Challenge representative advance to the Champion Cup. Raihan was baffled, but Piers stated that his people would not understand that nothing would change if he took on other Trainers' battle requests, for they all had high expectations from this Spikemuth challenger. Raihan also pointed out that Piers refused to move the stadium to a Power Spot, to which Piers simply stated that he and his citizens wouldn't want the glamorous lifestyle that other cities provided, and liked the town as it was currently.

Raihan admitted he wanted to speak with Piers about Chairman Rose, since he was experimenting with particles. While Piers respected Chairman Rose for getting things done effectively and quickly—like building childcare centers or protecting people from slander—he did agree it was not good that the chairman was using particles that they could not understand, even if it meant to protect Galar region in thousand years. They also found it odd that he simply gave up on Bede and had him disqualified, considering he would extend his chance to every person. Piers explained he got a visit from Opal regarding that, too. It made Piers wonder if the chairman had started to lose empathy towards other people, and that this act of disqualifying Bede was for a greater motive.

Suddenly, Piers heard a commotion, though he initially teased with Raihan that he merely imagined things. They saw Team Yell grunts reporting a Corviknight taxi crash beyond the tunnel at Route 9. Raihan and Piers went to the end, finding Leon carrying an unconscious Sonia. While Sonia was unharmed, Leon and Raihan took her to the medical center at Hammerlocke. Before leaving, Leon passed Sonia's item to Piers before she collapsed. Piers examined the Corviknight taxi, finding traces that it was attacked by an Electric-type move. Hearing a commotion that two voices broadcasting on a device equipped to a Golisopod and a Bronzong that they were demanding a specific item from Casey and Henry, Piers stepped in to show the item he had. He asked if that was what they were looking for, which the two voices recognized.[2]

The two men demanded the camera Piers showed. The latter gave it to Golisopod and Bronzong; the men praised Piers' behavior to the nobles, and had their Pokémon quickly go away. Casey shouted at Piers, who was impressed by her voice, thinking of using her in his next song. Anyway, he clarified that he gave the camera, but took out the memory, and urged others to move before these intruders return. Piers went into the motorhome with Magnolia at the front seats. He had them go to Spikemuth where they could prepare a trap for the intruders, making Magnolia very vengeful at them for destroying her motorhome. Nevertheless, she thanked Piers for his assistance, though he merely pointed out that the took the camera, letting Raihan and Leon take Sonia to the hospital. Magnolia asked of him not to be humble, for his rebellious behavior made the committee take action. The motorhome stopped at Spikemuth, so Piers gave the order to raise the gates. He welcomed the group to Spikemuth. In that moment, Casey analyzed the video, which was corrupted. Piers noted the two men in the video had distinct hairstyles, while Magnolia noticed the logo of Macro Cosmos in the background.

At either rate, the intruders' Golisopod and Bronzong returned, to which Piers let them in. The men were angry that they were fooled, since the memory was missing. Piers explained that they couldn't find much on the camera, and showed the video on a large screen, turning off the lights as well. The men saw that this did not compromise their plans, and had their Pokémon leave. Casey wanted to retrieve her Pokémon, to which the men threatened to harm Giga and Mega, which were in their possession. Stalling the Pokémon, Piers found the location of the two men: the light turned on, so Henry and Casey went to corner the two guys with distinct hairstyles, wearing suits. The men were annoyed that they have been found: Piers pointed out by destroying their broadcasting equipment and turning off the lights, they revealed the location by uttering their voices. The men were impressed by this lowly wisdom, and explained that Zacian and Zamazenta were interested in Henry and Casey.[1]

The men had Doublade attack Casey and Henry, so Piers had Obstagoon stop them, slamming Doublade. Piers then had it attack the two men, but Marnie shouted out to her brother, preventing Obstagoon from slashing the duo. The men were very nervous that they could have been easily be slashed, so they made their getaway by flying away with a Klinklang, who bursted a hole through the gate. Casey attempted to follow them, but tripped over due to her fatigue. After the fight was over, the group had Casey recover at the Pokémon Center. Casey remembered that in the Slumbering Weald, the two men had referred to themselves as ancestors to the heroes of the Galar legend. It made the group think whether such people exist, but none could remember that they know anyone in particular. Hop asked Marnie about her "bro", to which she and Piers admitted that they were siblings. The rest of the group was in shock, to which Marnie reminded Hop about his relation towards Leon, whereas Piers added that a rule was added that challengers' privacy was kept a secret. The group also talked about Sonia, to which Hop realized they were talking about Leon's friend, who went with him on the Gym Challenge. Hop shouted how he couldn't recognize her, which made Piers annoyed at this "noisy kid".[3]

The group waited as Piers called Leon. After the call, Piers explained that he had to go meet Chairman Rose and talk with him. He explained that the most probable thing to happen was to have the Gym Challenge suspended, though this all depended on Chairman Rose. The rest decided to join Piers, since this was more about the Gym Challenge than they thought. The group went to Wyndon, meeting with the rest of the Gym Leaders at Rose Tower. Hearing a commotion from inside the tower, the group met up with Opal and Bede, who tried to get Oleana out of the way. Oleana claimed that Rose was absent, but as the group did not believe her words, she sent her Pokémon to attack. Hop wanted to join, but Piers dragged him, as they were using this distraction. At the elevator, Piers was nearly attacked by Oleana's Garbodor, so Bede went in the elevator instead. After the children descended down and admitted that Rose was not present and the Darkest Day was unleashed at Hammerlocke, Oleana ended the battle with the Gym Leaders. The group noted that they couldn't use the monorail or the Corviknight taxi, due to the terror. In that moment, Professor Magnolia came with her motorhome, and asked of the group to go in as they rode to Hammerlocke.[5]

Piers was in the motorhome heading to Hammerlocke, which, due to a collapsed bridge, took a bumpy ride on the railway. On the way, he saw a broadcast from Sordward and Shielbert, commenting how they bribed the media to have this broadcast. As some of the Gym Leaders parted ways to help cities fend off Dynamaxed Pokémon, Piers chose to remain, and go only if they needed them. Having arrived, Piers went outside the motorhome to join Henry, who dashed away. After meeting up with Leon, Sonia, Nessa and Raihan, the group went inside the power plant, where they saw Chairman Rose proclaiming the success of his mission.[6] Piers and others confronted Chairman Rose, who stated that while certain crimes were committed, it was all to protect the Galar region, to accumulate Galar particles. Since the exit was sealed, Piers found it bad that they couldn't ask for outside help, until Oleana arrived by the elevator.[7]

Oleana, who came out of the elevator, asked for their help, which made Casey angry at her for luring them in and trapping them. Oleana reminded that Rose needed help, for he was trying to save Galar from its devastating future. Others had their doubts about this, to which Oleana admitted that even if Rose's intentions were benevolent, he could still make a wrong decision and suffer, to which Melony noted she was right. The group went to the top of the power plant, where Eternatus defeated Rose. With the fires spreading, the Gym Leaders arrived and stopped the fire, letting Raihan and Leon to come in and rescue Rose. The group, including Piers, joined in the fight to take Eternatus down. Piers also asked of Hop to join, who didn't have any Pokémon with type advantage. However, Piers reminded that he didn't have to win, only that he shouldn't lose, to which Hop braced himself to join the combat. However, Eternatus didn't suffer much, and a burst of energy was emitted: a beam was shot into the sky, transforming Eternatus into its "serious mode".[8]

Piers continued to battle Eternatus. As Trainers' Pokémon got defeated by Eternatus' beam, he used Malamar to teleport Hop and Marnie away, just before Eternatus' beam defeated Malamar as well. As Piers continued to battle, the group realized that Eternatus was too strong. He thought if they played dead, Eternatus might even let them be. As two Pokémon arrived—Zacian and Zamazenta—Piers had Nessa use a Revival Herb to restore his Malamar, warping everyone to safety. The group then watched Zacian and Zamazenta confronting Eternatus, even able to deal it damage, to which Hop and Marnie cheered on for these two Pokémon. Piers smiled, thinking that the two Pokémon had a chance with Marnie cheering them on.[9]

Just as Zacian and Zamazenta collided with Eternatus, a bright light flashed. By the time the rest of the Gym Leaders came to the top, they found everyone, including Piers, unconscious. The group was taken to the hospital in Hammerlocke, where they were recovering.[10] With the cure from Isle of Armor delivered, Piers was cured from the poison, though he couldn't walk yet. However, his hair has grown very long, to which Sonia took a picture of the group and sent it to Casey and Hop, who were working at Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra, respectively.[11]
