Peony is a character appearing in the Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield: The Crown Tundra.
Appearance[]
Peony is a tall man with dark skin who looks very similar to his older brother Rose. He wears his home-made Expedition Outfit and has gray hair with a short, black beard.
Personality[]
Usually, Peony is a bold and enthusiastic man who is not the best listener, and often tries to show off to his daughter Peonia, to the point that she feels annoyed. He is a comically enthusiastic father, which tends to embarrass his daughter. He tends to be rather loud and hammy, and likes to use "ultra-mega-" before words.
Biography[]
In his youth, Peony had always been compared to his excellent brother, Rose. The frequent comparison eventually drove him into becoming a rebellious person. His battling skills were later acknowledged, and his strong and forthright style had attracted an entourage of fervent male fans. He even managed to successfully attain the title of Champion at a certain point of his life. Nonetheless, after knowing that Rose decided to take up as the chairman of the league, Peony chose to abandon his title and depart from the arena.
The Crown Tundra[]
The player character first meets Peony in Slippery Slope, who's having a disagreement with Peonia because of her wanting to go to Max Lair to have Dynamax Adventures. To make way for Peonia, who is embarrassed by her father's antics, to escape from Peony's care, the player character battles Peony. After the battle (regardless of the outcome), and realizing Peonia is gone, he dashes off to the Max Lair.
In the Max Lair, Peony has a dispute with the lead scientist: Peony wants to have a Dynamax Adventure as an excuse to find her daughter, but the scientist refuses to let him in. When the scientist explains to the player character about the mechanics of Dynamax Adventures, Peony takes the opportunity to go further to find Peonia. After the player completes a Dynamax Adventure, finds Peonia and returns to the lobby, he is seen in the middle of the chamber, lying down. The scientist claims that he tripped on a rock and struck his head. After the player explains where Peonia is, he thinks that she does not really want to go on his father-daughter bonding "adven-tour", and asks the player character to explore with him instead after giving the player his League Card. Outside the Max Lair, he shows the player character where the settlement—Freezington—is.
Upon arriving at the village, Peony shows the player character where he is waiting. Inside the inn, he declares that the inn is now their base camp, and explains what his exploration team will do. He grants the player character the title of Expedition Chief, before giving the player character the Expedition Uniform and three Legendary Clues. He starts the first expedition first, calling it The Sacred Bones of Souverign and Steed!. Before the player leaves, he gives the player a Master Ball.
Peony then resides at the top-left corner of the inn. The player may show him progress of each adventures by showing him the Pokémon from the Legendary Clue. If all of the Pokémon in an expedition are complete, the expedition is done.
The Sacred Bones of Sovereign and Steed![]
Upon interacting with the round object on the table, Peony explains that the object is his pillow, since he can sleep on it, and he used it as the pillow because he left his original one at home. Despite this, he still lets the player character obtain the item—the Wooden Crown.
After Calyrex is battled, Peony appears again, shocked by its "massive noggin". Before he can escape, Calyrex possess him in order to speak directly with the player character. When Calyrex leaves, Peony regains consciousness, realizing that he "slept" outside and then heads back to the Freeze Inn. He gets possessed again when the player character meets Calryex the second time, before being "awakened" again and goes back to the inn.
Peony himself appears again when the player character is in the mayor's house. He complains about that the hot water from the shower seems to have run out. Seeing that the mayor is in trouble about making a set of Reins of Unity for the player character, he decides to do it for himself. Outside, he explains to the player character that he took a shower because he caught himself sleeping outside again, but the water coming was very cold. Surprised, he jumped out before putting on his clothes. Before he finishes the conversation, Calyrex appears from above and possesses his body.
Peony is awakened during the event in Crown Shrine, when Calyrex tries to fuse with the steed. He gets surprised that Calyrex has got a ride, but he gets possessed by Calyrex again. Before battling, it sends Peony back to Freezington to not "let him freeze out in this frigid clime".
The Terrible Titans... Lurking Locked Away![]
Upon heading in front of one of the ruins across the Crown Tundra, Peony talks to the player character on phone. He explains that the ruins are where the Legendary Giants are located, but no one is able to unlock the doors leading to the interior of the ruins. He names the adventure The Terrible Titans... Lurking Locked Away!, then leaves the research for the player character. He talks to the player character via the phone each time one of the Legendary Giants is captured, except for in the Split-Decision Ruins, in which the player is told to report to him instead.
A Legendary Tree of a Legendary Three![]
Peony appears on phone after the event in Dyna Tree Hill, reporting a trio of bird Pokémon appearing in the Galar region: one in the Wild Area, one in the Isle of Armor and one in the Crown Tundra. Thinking that they are the Pokémon he wrote in Legendary Clue 3, he name this adventure, aiming to catch the three Pokémon, A Legendary Tree of a Legendary Three!.
For the first two capture, Peony congratulates the player character on phone. For the last capture, the player is told to go reporting to Peony instead.
After completing all three chapters, he thanks the player character for finishing the adventures for him, and gives his rare League Card. Peonia appears, ready to take the "Adven-tours", but Peony, out of legends to explore, tells her that he will come up with an adventure for "a nice father-daughter expedition", and gives her an outfit. This quickly angers Peonia, causing her to return to Max Lair after handing the outfit—the Gold Expedition Outfit—to the player character. Peony, in response, follows her to spend quality time with her.
Left in the inn, apparently dropped by Peony, is the Legendary Clue?. The player is asked to return the memo to Peony. In the Max Lair, when the player character returns the Legendary Clue? to Peony, Trainers run out of the lair, reporting "a horde of creatures" appearing. With this, Peony starts an extra adventure named They Came from the Ultra Beyond!, with the goal to catch the Pokémon appearing in the clue.
By showing him that Pokémon—Necrozma—that the player has caught in Dynamax Adventures, he consider the "adventure" as complete, despite not recalling writing the mysterious clue. The scientist appears from behind, telling that the paper is actually a note from her.
In the Max Lair, the player can show him a Legendary Pokémon they have caught in Dynamax Adventures, or battle him. He also appears in the Galarian Star Tournament.
When talking with Peonia, Peony hears about a rumor of a long haired female ghost at the Old Cemetery. After catching up with the player at night, he finds out that the "ghost" is merely Oleana, who mistook him as Rose, and feels offended by her wrong perception about him and the mention of his brother, implying that he and Rose despise each other. After hearing her throwing a tantrum about him being nothing like Rose and storms off, he is puzzled on the brother he hates badly is able to invoke loyalty from her, before joking and running off himself.
League Card entries[]
Regular League Card[]
Peony is a former Steel-type Gym Leader. His powerful and dynamic battle style meant that anyone stuck on pitch maintenance had their work cut out for them. To this day, he is known as "Steel Peony" and has many fans, especially among men. This photo is actually a composite photo, made before Peony came to the Crown Tundra. It was originally a poster Peony stuck in the travel planner he made for his daughter, but she threw it away in short order. Peony liked the way it looked and decided to use it for his League Card.
Rare League Card[]
Though this is seldom addressed publicly, Peony is, in fact, Rose's younger brother. Peony was compared to his brilliant older brother since he was born, causing him to gradually rebel and become a delinquent. He eventually ran away from home, only to eventually become a Gym Leader once his talent was recognized. He was even Champion once, but shortly afterward, Rose became League Chairman. This caused Peony to vanish entirely from the League. The Copperajah on Peony's team has been there since it was a Cufant. It was the first Pokémon Peony caught together with his brother.
