This Metagross is a Steel/Psychic-type Pokémon owned by Paul.
Biography[]
When Ash and Paul had a three on three match with no switching out at Professor Oak's Lab as a form of training for the Masters Eight Tournament, Paul summoned his third and last member, Metagross to go up against Ash's Gengar. Gengar was struggling against Metagross as the latter was constantly dodging attacks with Agility. During the bout, Paul warned Ash that if the latter was struggling against the former, then Ash would have no chance of winning the Masters Eight Tournament. Understanding this, Ash had Gengar used Will-o-Wisp to burn Metagross and lower its attack stats. Gengar then used Shadow Ball to knock Metagross out, winning Ash the match, marking the third time Ash bested Paul (the first was the Pokéringer and the second was at the Sinnoh League).
Goh took note that Metagross is also the signature Pokémon of Steven Stone and Paul's Metagross also fought the same way as Steven's, minus the Mega Evolution.
Metagross later appeared in a flashback in Battling as Hard as Stone!, when Ash remembered his training against Paul during the former's battle against Steven Stone.
