Episode plot[]
At the Cerise Laboratory, Ash is busy training with his Pokémon for his upcoming match against Raihan when Goh and Chloe Cerise arrive to bring them some food. Lucario, wanting to train, drags Cinderace for more training. This inspires Chloe's Eevee to train, dragging Goh's Froakie. When Eevee tackles Froakie, it suddenly evolves into Frogadier. Goh is delighted by the evolution while seeing Frogadier immediately reminds Ash of his own Greninja when he had been travelling across Kalos. He then decides that they'll go pay a visit to his old Pokémon and takes Goh along, stating that when he and Greninja had battled together, they fought as one, and has a similar feeling with Lucario's Aura and thus wants the two to meet each other.
In Hammerlocke Stadium, Raihan greets his fans, who wish to support him in his match against Ash. Raihan appreciates their support, but when he enters his stadium, his demeanor changes as he recalls why he took selfies in the first place and wishes to beat Leon. He also ponders about Ash's rapid raise through the rankings before he starts his training with Duraludon.
Arriving at Kalos, the boys immediately head into a forest to find Greninja, since Ash had to release Greninja so he could protect Kalos. Despite spending a whole day looking for him, the two were unsuccessful in doing so and camp out for the night. Ash tells Goh about his Greninja from how he obtained him as his first Pokémon in Kalos, their special bond and how he had to part with him to complete his task. Goh is impressed with the bond they had and hopes that they could meet him soon before they go to sleep.
In the middle of the night, Ash and Lucario jolt awake, having sensed what they believed was Greninja and run out of the tent. Goh, having just woken up from their disturbance, sees them leaving and goes after them. Lucario, arriving first, instead find a large amount of roots, as Team Flare's projects had generated negative energy that took on said form. Lucario attempts to use Aura Sphere, but the attack is unsuccessful and another root tries to attack Lucario, only for Greninja to appear and destroy it using Cut. The boys then catch up with the pair and Ash directs Greninja in destroying the evil roots.
Ash properly greets Greninja and explains why he came to Kalos to him, requesting a match between him and Lucario. Greninja accepts and they begin the session. While Ash is able to sense Greninja's movements and tell Lucario where to go, Greninja's agility is far too superior for the Aura Pokémon to handle. Ash tries to Mega Evolve Lucario, but he rejects and tries to attack his own way, though it fails to yield any results. Humiliated and ashamed, Lucario then runs off, much to Ash's worry. Greninja stops Ash from following, instead telling him that he'll take care of the problem and heads off.
Greninja finds Lucario sitting in a stream and offers to help teach him what he had learned with Ash. The two Pokémon stand and Greninja begins sending ripples in the water, which Lucario is able to sense and begins to sync with him. At the same time, Ash tells Goh that Lucario and Greninja were basically the same, as they wanted to get stronger the moment they met him. Suddenly, more roots, larger than before, attack the two boys, resulting in Pikachu and Cinderace being sent to fight them to no avail. Greninja and Lucario, sensing the new roots, rush back to the boys and work in sync with Ash to repel them. The roots coil together in response to the threat, so Ash lets Lucario Mega Evolve and has Greninja use Water Shuriken while Lucario uses Aura Sphere. Lucario, in sync with his Trainer, generates a larger sphere than before and the two attacks collide with the roots, destroying them.
Ash congratulates Lucario for his efforts and thanks Greninja for helping train him, assuring him that he'll come for another visit. Greninja nods and vanishes in an instant to continue his task, while Raihan is still training with Duraludon, as both share the same passion of facing Leon.
