Synopsis[]
Ash is continuing his quest to challenge Leon, but when he and Goh arrive at Spikemuth Gym for his next Pokémon World Coronation Series battle, they discover they’ve been given the wrong directions! Gym Leader Piers gives him a ride to Wyndon, where Piers’s little sister Marnie is patiently waiting to battle. The match gets off to a roaring start, and both Marnie’s Grimmsnarl and Ash’s Gengar show off their massive powers in Gigantamax form. Although Grimmsnarl is a powerhouse, Ash and Gengar execute an unusual strategy to win the battle, catapulting Ash’s World Coronation Series ranking to 15![1]
Episode plot[]
Ash and Goh arrive in Spikemuth, having been sent to the town by Team Yell who told them that the match was going to take place there instead of Wyndon. Upon arriving, they find a spiky-haired man performing with some Pokémon. Ash tries to greet them, but the man orders his Amped Form Toxtricity to use Discharge, although Pikachu blocks the attack with Thunderbolt. The man introduces himself as Piers and he's the Dark-type Gym Leader of Spikemuth. Quickly learning they were sent for a battle with his sister, he apologizes to them on Team Yell's behalf before Goh tells Ash that the match is going to begin soon, sending him into a panic.
Piers offers him a ride to Wyndon and tells them that Team Yell mostly consists of Marnie's fans, who is also his little sister. Ash wonders why they couldn't have battled in the gym, but Piers explains that Dynamaxing is not possible in Spikemuth; even then, he refuses to Dynamax and prefers normal battles, although this has caused few people to visit Spikemuth to challenge him and explains its current state. Marnie on the other hand, has no issues with Dynamaxing and is willing to do anything to bring Spikemuth back on the map.
Back at the stadium, the announcer is about to forfeit the match towards Marnie, but she refuses to accept it and instead plans on waiting for Ash to come. Ash soon arrives and accuses Team Yell of lying to him, much to Marnie's surprise. She becomes further surprised when she learns that Piers had driven him to the stadium before berating Team Yell for cheating to make her win, having wanted to win fairly. Piers then arrives and tells Marnie to battle with everything she has, while Marnie's Morpeko sniffs Pikachu before becoming friendly with him. Ash and Marnie agree to have a fair, full-on fight.
Goh then arrives at the stadium, having called a Flying Taxi over just as the match begins. Ash sends Gengar while Marnie sends Grimmsnarl out for the match. Piers explains to Goh that Grimmsnarl is Marnie's ace Pokémon, while Goh states that Gengar had recently powered up. As the match begins, Marnie orders a Spirit Break, while Ash calls for Dazzling Gleam. Gengar dodges Grimmsnarl's attack before following up with an Ice Punch that sends Grimmsnarl to the ground. Ash orders a Shadow Ball finisher, but he stops when Grimmsnarl appears to crouch and uses False Surrender to hit him.
Marnie then recalls Grimmsnarl to Gigantamax him, much to the delight of Team Yell while Piers explains to Goh how he and Marnie have their own ways to bring Spikemuth back to life. Grimmsnarl uses G-Max Snooze while Gengar uses Dazzling Gleam, managing to resist the devastating attack. As a side effect of G-Max Snooze, Gengar starts to get drowsy but manages to tough it out, much to Marnie's surprise as she couldn't recall anyone who resisted it.
Gengar then tries to use Sludge Bomb while flying around Grimmsnarl, but gets hit by Max Quake and has his attacks blocked. Seeing no other choice, Ash decides to Gigantamax Gengar; at Stow-on-Side, Allister watches the match from his Rotom Phone. Gengar uses Max Ooze while Grimmsnarl uses Max Starfall. Grimmsnarl's attack manages to land, although he quickly reverts back to normal as Gigantamax fades. Gengar proceeds to use Max Hailstorm, although Grimmsnarl manages to jump towards Gengar and lands a Spirit Break. Marnie orders a follow-up with Darkest Lariat while Gengar tries to stop the attack with G-Max Terror, although the projectiles fail to stop him.
As Grimmsnarl moves closer to Gengar, Team Yell begins to cheer on Marnie, but Ash unexpectedly orders Gengar to swallow Grimmsnarl just as his own Gigantamax fades, spitting him out in the process. Grimmsnarl proceeds to use Stomping Tantrum to send shards of rock flying towards Gengar, but Gengar uses Shadow Ball to break through the shards and hits Grimmsnarl, causing him to faint, allowing Ash to win the match.
Piers looks on with satisfaction while Team Yell is dismayed by Marnie's loss. Ash and Pikachu thank Gengar for the win, while Marnie thanks Grimmsnarl for his performance in the match before the audience begins to cheer Marnie and Grimmsnarl for their performance. As a promotion match, Ash's Ultra Class rank increases to 15. Outside the stadium, Ash and Marnie thank each other for the battle, commenting the others' Pokémon's strengths. As they finish, some of Team Yell's grunts tell Marnie that due to the match, more people are interested in visiting Spikemuth. Piers tells Marnie that it warrants a smile, so Marnie gives both the grunts and Ash a huge smile. She thanks Ash for their match once more but states that she won't lose again before the two shake hands.
