Episode plot[]
At the Cerise Laboratory, Espeon and Umbreon are being shown to Chloe and her Eevee. Upon receiving information about both Pokémon on Chloe's Rotom Phone, Eevee grows excited as Ash and Goh watch on. Professor Cerise also shows a building in the Johto region known as Eclipse Castle where Ren and Chrysa inform Chloe that Espeon and Umbreon have been cherished there as special Pokémon. Chloe is astounded by the castle and immediately wants to visit it, even asking Eevee if it wants to meet its evolutions. Professor Cerise also informs that the people of the castle are about to hold a festival for the upcoming solar eclipse, grabbing Ash and Goh's interest as they and Chloe decide to visit the Johto region for the festival.
The three arrive at Eclipse Castle, impressed by the structure. Chloe also points out a crest near the top of the castle depicting both Espeon and Umbreon. As the children marvel at the castle, Eevee spots a gleam in the distant hills where an Espeon and Umbreon sit alongside a large sundial. As Eevee and Chloe run off to the hills, Ash and Goh remain at the castle as an elderly woman named Helia approaches behind them, informing them of the castle's past and the presence of the crest. Long ago during one particular Eclipse Festival, the castle's liege was attacked by intruders attempting to take over the castle. However, the liege's partners, Espeon and Umbreon, valiantly protected him. In their honor, the lord created a crest to graciously celebrate their bravery and to represent the day that the sun and moon became one. Goh is amazed at Helia's knowledge on the castle's past, to which she chuckles and replies that she is the current liege of the castle. The news surprises Ash and Goh, as she also tells that she will be retiring later that day to allow her granddaughter Soleil to take her place.
As Chloe chases Eevee through the tall grass, a girl stands alongside Espeon and Umbreon at the giant sundial, praying quietly for the Eclipse Festival to go smoothly and for everyone to accept her as the new castle liege. The Espeon alongside the girl suddenly senses Chloe's Eevee running through the grass and foretells it falling off a nearby cliff. As Eevee continues running and falls off the cliff, Espeon uses Psychic to lift Eevee up and place her at the altar. Chloe gratefully rushes over to Eevee, thankful that she is safe. The girl credits Espeon's psychic abilities for saving Eevee, though the two girls quickly notice that they look almost identical. Chloe introduces herself as the lookalike introduces herself as Soleil. Chloe explains that she came to the Johto region to see the Espeon and Umbreon of Eclipse Castle, delighting Soleil.
Chloe and Soleil return to the castle, much to the surprise of Ash, Goh, and Helia as they look at the two girls' similarities. The two confuse everyone even more by having swapped clothes earlier, only being discerned by the patterns in their hair. The two settle down as Chloe informs Soleil about her special Eevee, explaining to her that it copies other Pokémon's moves while still being unable to evolve due to its unusually unstable genes. This allows her to let Eevee choose its own path rather than forcing its evolution. Soleil compares this behavior to her own Pokémon, who chose their own path by protecting her (The female Eevee evolved into Espeon after saving Soleil from falling after she tripped, while the male Eevee became Umbreon that same night after protecting the two from a Crobat). The Espeon and Umbreon make up for their own flaws which Soleil compares to humans or Pokémon not being perfect, but rather they support each other and make up for each other, leaving everyone to live life a little easier. The words move Ash, Goh, and Chloe who think that Soleil is truly worthy of being the new castle liege due to her wisdom. Soleil is worried that people may not accept her as the new liege during the festival, though Chloe believes in her after her strong words.
Soleil gives the trio a tour of the castle and shows them a collection of Espeon and Umbreon-related artifacts and artwork they have. She informs them of a painting of the castle's first liege, Sorin, giving a speech before he and the castle were attacked by his younger brother, Luno. The future liege assures that if she were to take the throne of the castle, she would make sure nothing similar would ever happen again. The children then hear distant fireworks, signaling the beginning of the Eclipse Festival. As Soleil goes to get ready for the festival, a mysterious boy watches over the small village with binoculars.
Ash, Goh, and Chloe begin to head to the festival, though Chloe notices she must change out of Soleil's outfit before going. She tells Ash and Goh to go on as she runs to go change before a Trainer with an Ariados commands it to use String Shot, tangling Chloe as Eevee stands by. The Trainer mistakes Chloe for Soleil as he returns his Ariados, picking up Chloe and swatting her Eevee to the side. He leaps from the castle and rides away on his Noctowl with Chloe.
The festival is about to begin as Ash and Goh stand by the castle, waiting for Soleil to emerge while unaware of Chloe's sudden kidnapping. Inside of the castle, Soleil stands alongside her Espeon and Umbreon. Ash's Pikachu suddenly notices Chloe's Eevee approaching the two boys, frantically attempting to get their attention. While Eevee runs off, Soleil emerges from the castle balcony's doors as Helia stands by. Chloe, tied up with string in a large tree, worries about Soleil's safety. Over at the festival is the mysterious Trainer that took Chloe, riding on his Noctowl and surprised upon seeing the soon-to-be lord at the castle. The Trainer descends, commanding his Noctowl to use Air Slash. The attack misses Soleil as Umbreon leaps to tackle Noctowl. Espeon and Umbreon go to their Trainer side as the boy confronts her, noticing that she had a double to take her place. Soleil is shocked, asking where the Trainer may have taken Chloe, though he demands that he be declared the liege of the castle in order for Chloe to be rescued. The crowd begins to worry, puzzled by the sudden halt in the festival.
Ash and Goh look for Chloe in the wild alongside their Pokémon. The two check by the giant sundial as Eevee depressingly sits down, wondering where her Trainer may be. Eevee suddenly senses that Chloe is located somewhere in a large tree and runs off as everyone follows. At Eclipse Castle, the Trainer stands by Soleil, waiting to be announced as the new lord. Helia demands to know the Trainer's name in order to be announced as the new liege, to which the Trainer unmasks himself and says that he is Illunas. Now knowing the Trainer's name, Soleil prepares to announce Illunas as the new lord before Ash, Goh, Chloe, and Eevee come barging in. Eevee instantly tackles Illunas while Noctowl flies to his side, leaving him to bring out his two other Pokémon: Ursaring and Ariados.
Goh and Ash prepare to let Grookey and Pikachu battle, though Soleil insists that she and Chloe can handle the situation with their Pokémon, reminding them that it is an important moment to determine if Soleil will be the Eclipse Castle liege. She attempts to reason with Illunas with words, though he brushes it off and orders his Pokémon to attack. Ariados attacks with Poison Jab, Ursaring attacks with Hammer Arm, and Noctowl attacks with Wing Attack, all three charging towards the opponents. Espeon uses Reflect to stop the incoming attacks while Umbreon uses Snarl, hitting the three Pokémon back. Ariados prepares to use String Shot, nearly hitting Eevee as it attacks with Tackle. Despite Eevee's attempt, Ariados flings her away as it is about to use Pin Missile. In order to stop the attack, Soleil prepares to commands Espeon to use Reflect once more. However, Eevee instead uses Copycat to copy Espeon's Reflect move, successfully stopping Pin Missile with the glowing barrier set up. Frustrated by the three opponents, Illunas tells Noctowl to use Air Slash while Ursaring uses Slash. Espeon uses Wish while Umbreon uses Dark Pulse, with the latter successfully hitting Noctowl and stopping its attack. However, Ursaring slashes Umbreon, damaging it until Espeon's Wish heals the Moonlight Pokémon.
During the battle between the assassin and the two girls, the solar eclipse begins to happen. Soleil informs Chloe that Espeon powers up in sunlight while Umbreon powers up in moonlight, so the combined power of a solar eclipse would make them stronger together. Illunas hears of the news, reluctant to have them become stronger as he tells Ariados, Noctowl, and Ursaring to use Pin Missile, Air Slash, and Arm Hammer, respectively. Eevee once again uses Copycat, copying Umbreon's Dark Pulse and stopping Ariados's Pin Missile. Both Espeon and Umbreon leap into the air as Espeon uses Psychic and Umbreon uses Dark Pulse. The combined attacks pummels Ursaring and Noctowl. The combined efforts of Eevee, Espeon, and Umbreon lead to Illunas' three Pokémon all fainting as he recalls them.
Soleil approaches Illunas calmly, letting him know that Helia has been looking for him for years. Illunas seems confused before Helia explains that it is a tradition of the castle to name its inhabitants after the sun and moon. The "sol" in Soleil represented the Sun, as "sol" was also present in the name of the castle's first liege, Sorin. His brother, Luno's name, came from the Moon. Helia notices that Illunas also has the lunar theme in his name as well, leading her to realize that Ilunas is a descendant of Luno, which he confirms. He explains that Luno was ashamed of his failed coup and that his bloodline lived in secret ever since, only for Illunas to emerge in hopes of becoming Eclipse Castle's new leader. During his explanation, Helia embraces him after looking for him for so long while apologizing that, if the people of the castle had found him sooner, he would have to endure much less hardship.
Soleil suddenly approaches Illunas, firmly grasping one of his arms and raising it into the air as she announces she and him will both be co-lieges. Illunas tells Soleil to not show him pity, though she states that it is not pity, but a gesture of helping her friend after she and her grandmother had been looking for a missing lunar liege to help with the castle. She says that they're practically brother and sister and compares them being able to work together to Espeon and Umbreon, the two Pokémon that make up for each other's flaws and work well together. She also states that fighting will get them nowhere and that they shouldn't stay stuck in the past, so they should begin working together to make up for each other. These words bring a tear to Illunas' eye as he receives a slap on the back from Soleil. Now that the two have agreed to work together, the crowd as well as Ash, Goh, and Chloe begin to applaud the new lieges of Eclipse Castle.
