A Midsummer Night's Light! (Japanese: クレセリア 真夏(まなつ)(よる)(ひかり)HepburnCresselia Manatsu no Yoru no Hikaritrans. Cresselia: Midsummer Night's Light) is the 27th episode of Pocket Monsters (2019 series), and Pokémon Journeys: The Series of Pokémon Journeys: The Series.

Synopsis[]

Ash and Goh are in Sinnoh, where entire towns are being plagued by nightmares. Chloe and Dawn are there, too—and they’ve stumbled upon an injured Cresselia. Dawn treats its wounds, then teaches Chloe a bit about Contests. Meanwhile, Ash and Goh confirm that Darkrai is causing the nightmares. When they all meet up, Chloe and Dawn theorize that Darkrai and Cresselia aren’t really enemies—and they’re right! After a confrontation with Team Rocket’s elite Matori Matrix, Cresselia heals Darkrai’s wounds, and Darkrai blows away the clouds so Cresselia can use Moonlight on itself. Both Pokémon return home, so it’s time for our heroes to have some summer fun![1]

Episode plot[]

Chloe and Dawn encounter the mysterious Cresselia while Chloe identifies it with her Rotom Phone. Dawn states that the Pokémon should be on Fullmoon Island, a place she previously met a Cresselia. She rushes over to the Lunar Pokémon to tend to its wounds, though Cresselia notices her and fends her off with a Psycho Cut. Dawn then attempts to reassure Cresselia that she is not an enemy and only wants to help, but Cresselia keeps her stance. Chloe's Eevee suddenly steps forward to communicate with Cresselia while Chloe remembers her father's words about facing Pokémon before her departure. While remembering the advice, she steps forward towards Cresselia and embraces the Legendary Pokémon's head in her arms. Eevee and Piplup run to Chloe's side as Dawn looks on in amazement, suddenly reaching for some supplies in her bag.

During the night, Dawn and Chloe heal Cresselia using bandages and a special herb mix. While helping Cresselia, the two girls wonder how the Lunar Pokémon could've got so hurt. Dawn presumes it may be Darkrai, a Pokémon said to be the complete opposite of Cresselia. Chloe brings up that she also has knowledge on herb mixes that help Pokémon while Dawn adds that she once travelled with two other people, one of which was good at medically helping Pokémon. After helping Cresselia, the two girls and their Pokémon decide to sit by the fire for dinner as they discuss family life. Dawn brings up that her mother is a professional Pokémon coordinator, surprising Chloe as she had previously seen her on a broadcast. Dawn also adds that she wants to be just like her mother. As Dawn asks Chloe about her family life, she states that her mother is an artist while her father researches Pokémon. Chloe also adds that she is unsure on what she wants to become, originally thinking she would be a Pokémon researcher just like her father until she met Eevee, making her rethink her future. She also explains that it can not evolve, thus knowing the move Copycat to expand her moveset and help her choose. Despite being unable to evolve, Chloe is still happy that Eevee is having fun. Dawn relates this to her Piplup, which she didn't evolve, helping it grow strong while staying small and growing a better bond with her. Dawn also realized that Piplup helped in Pokémon Contests, so she decides to show Chloe her routine.

Dawn shows off her Pokémon Contest routine to Chloe as she is now dressed in a blue dress while she sends out Piplup from a Poké Ball. She tells Piplup to use Whirlpool, causing a large vortex of water to appear as Piplup spins on the top of it, amazing Chloe and Eevee as the sparkling water flies about. Piplup descends from as the whirlpool subsides and successfully lands, impressing the two spectators. Eevee grows excited upon seeing Piplup's performance and wants to try and participate as well, so Chloe attempts her first performance in front of Dawn, Piplup, and Cresselia. Eevee uses Copycat to copy Piplup's Whirlpool and is able to successfully climb the whirlpool. Chloe is amazed by Eevee's performance but is suddenly doused in the whirlpool's water while Eevee falls onto her head.

The girls decide to tend to Cresselia's wounds some more. They place bandages on its body as its injuries begin to heal. While Piplup and Eevee sleep, Dawn informs Chloe of the move Lunar Dance, the signature move of Cresselia capable of healing it. As the two pet Cresselia, they doze off to sleep. Suddenly, Chloe and Dawn find themselves in a dark and misty landscape. The area clears up and a town full of people is revealed. The townsfolk then begin to fall to the ground as Darkrai reveals itself from the shadows. A bright flash of light appears and Cresselia floats above Chloe and Dawn. The Lunar Wing floats alongside Cresselia as it lets out a bright green light, causing the townsfolk to wake up as Darkrai leaves. The situation is revealed to be a dream as Chloe and Dawn wake up, discussing the similarities of their dreams. The two then realize that Darkrai was present in the forest and Cresselia saved them from one of its nightmares.

While Chloe and Dawn have their realization, Ash and Goh continue to search through the woods for clues or a sign of Darkrai. They hear the cry of a nearby Bonsly having a nightmare and decide to investigate, only for Darkrai to appear behind them. Ash scolds Darkrai for giving the town nightmares as the Pitch-Black Pokémon simply floats away. The two boys take chase while Cresselia attempts to fly. Chloe and Dawn encourage Cresselia to get up, though Darkrai appears and the girls attempt to protect the fragile Cresselia. Meanwhile, Team Rocket flies by in their balloon, tired from their search for Cresselia. However, Meowth spots Darkrai through his binoculars and Team Rocket decide to capture it due to it being a rare find they could return to their base. They call for Pelipper who breaks the tense moment between Chloe, Dawn, and Darkrai as the Rocket Prize Master drops in front of them. The three are surprised at Team Rocket's sudden interference while they use the Rocket Prize Master to dispense two Poké Balls that release Dusknoir and Lunatone. Dusknoir uses Shadow Ball while Lunatone uses Moonblast, though both attacks are quickly destroyed by Darkrai's Dark Pulse, causing a large cloud of smoke to cover the forest. Dawn and Chloe decide to use the cover of the smoke to run off with Cresselia but find themselves at a shoreline. The two then see two figures emerge from the forest, revealing themselves as Ash and Goh, leaving all four amazed to see each other.

The four are all in awe at seeing each other, especially Ash and Dawn who are very glad to see each other again. Piplup and Pikachu are even excited to reunite, though Goh tells everyone to stay organized. The four and their Pokémon decide to settle down after the stressful encounter with Darkrai, so Dawn and Ash explain to Goh and Chloe that they used to travel together. Ash is especially excited to see that Chloe and Dawn were taking care of Cresselia. The girls also learn that Ash and Goh were investigating the nightmares caused by Darkrai and attempting to track it down. Meanwhile, Darkrai once again uses Dark Pulse, causing Dusknoir, Lunatone, and Team Rocket to blast off into the trees. After Darkrai's attack, it continues looking for Cresselia. Ash and Goh speculate that Darkrai may have caused Cresselia's injuries, though Chloe thinks that another source is to blame and that Cresselia and Darkrai are not enemies, but she is not entirely sure on her theory. Dawn agrees with Chloe's thoughts while everyone looks towards Cresselia, wondering who would hurt it. Suddenly, the culprit appears in the form of Team Rocket's airship.

As Team Rocket's airship flies over the kids, Team Rocket Grunts alongside Matori descend from the ship to capture Cresselia. The protectors of Cresselia won't go give up easily, so Matori orders the grunts to send out their Pokémon. Pikachu attempts to use Iron Tail on Skuntank, though the Pokémon easily hits back with Flamethrower. Goh sends out Cinderace to join the fray and orders it to use Blaze Kick on the grunt's Toxicroak. Cinderace charges towards the Toxicroak, though it easily avoids the attack and uses Venoshock on Cinderace. Dawn's Piplup uses Bubble Beam to attack the grunts themselves, though Rhyperior steps in to protect the grunts as it uses Stone Edge, sending Piplup flying. One of the grunt's Pokémon, Purugly, attempts to attack Cresselia with Fury Swipes, though Chloe's Eevee leaps in to attack Purugly with Tackle, sending it away from Cresselia. The four on four battle is still for a moment until Darkrai suddenly appears to defend Cresselia from the grunts. The sudden appearance of two rare Pokémon only encourages Team Rocket more as they are ordered by Matori to continue going for Cresselia. Skuntank and Toxicroak combine Venoshock and Flamethrower to blast away the people protecting Cresselia, causing a large cloud of sand to block Cresselia's vision. Rhyperior attempts to attack Cresselia while the sand blinds the area, though Darkrai quickly notices and uses Dark Pulse to send Rhyperior away. One by one, the Pokémon combine their attacks to take out the grunt's Pokémon until there are none left to fight. With no Pokémon left, Matori resorts to using the airship to stop Darkrai, their greatest struggle.

Two prongs on the airship begin to spark with electricity as two beams shoot towards Darkrai. The Pitch-Black Pokémon is able to protect Cresselia from the shock with its hands, though it is immensely painful. The power of the electricity increases and Darkrai is completely shocked by electricity. During this, two rockets are sent out that release nets, capturing Ash, Goh, Chloe, Dawn, and their Pokémon. Things seem bleak for Darkrai and the four children as the grunts walk up to Darkrai. Suddenly, Cresselia rises above and uses Lunar Dance, the move Dawn informed Chloe about. Cresselia's body begins to shine and Darkrai is completely revitalized, however, Cresselia faints and falls to the ground as soon as Darkrai is healed. Now fully replenished, Darkrai uses Dark Pulse to hit Team Rocket's airship, causing it to crash towards the ground. Darkrai then uses Dark Void to create a dome of darkness, putting Team Rocket to sleep. Pikachu uses Iron Tail to free everyone from the net, though it seems that trouble isn't gone just yet. Jessie, James, and Meowth leap for one last attempt at capturing a rare Pokémon, though they are easily put to sleep by Dark Void just like the other Team Rocket members.

The kids rushes to Cresselia to check if it is okay. Cresselia moves its head to see Darkrai as it uses Dark Pulse to clear the clouds. The cleared clouds reveal the moon, allowing for its light to help Cresselia use Moonlight in order to heal itself. As everyone looks on in amazement, Cresselia flies into the air and goes towards the sky along with Darkrai to return to their homes on Fullmoon Island and Newmoon Island respectively. The four look on as Cresselia and Darkrai fly out to sea and realize how, despite their differences, the two Pokémon are able to get along and that, despite their scary acts, they can be friendly creatures. The realization also helps Chloe remember her father's words about investigating Pokémon as Eevee goes to her side.

The next day, Chloe suddenly receives a call from her father over her Rotom Phone. Professor Cerise wonders if she is doing okay, to which Chloe reassures him. He states that chaos has started at the lab due to the Eggs previously incubating there all hatching into mischievous young Piplup. The call suddenly hangs up and Chloe watches Goh, Ash, and Dawn play together in the water. Dawn and Chloe call for Piplup and Eevee, respectively, though Eevee is too busy playing with Grookey in the water. Dawn then grabs Chloe's hand and helps her join the others playing in the water.
