Synopsis[]

It’s time for the Pokémon Marine Athletic Race! After arriving, our heroes meet up with Kiley, a friend of Chrysa’s, so Chloe and Eevee can learn more about Kiley’s partner Vaporeon. Kiley assures Chloe that even though Eevee’s not a Water type, it can still enter the race. Ash competes with Dracovish, and Goh chooses Dewgong—who proceeds to pick a fight with an aggressive Huntail. The Huntail corners Chloe, Dewgong, and Eevee in an underwater cave, but our heroes combine forces and defeat it! Then, Kiley gives Chloe a Water Stone as an option for the future—so Eevee can make its evolutionary choice when the time is right![1]

Episode plot[]

Ash and Goh are both excitedly watching a broadcast of the Pokémon Marine Athletics, a race where Water-type Pokémon and their Trainers compete. The two are watching as Trainers and their swimming Pokémon compete in several activities such as swimming, hoop jumping, and running. Chloe's Eevee and Yamper are also excited, joining in with Ash and Goh. While watching the race, Chloe's Eevee spots a swimming Vaporeon competing alongside the other Pokémon and becomes excited at the thought of evolving into it. As a result, Eevee cheers. Professor Cerise and Chloe take notice of Eevee's excitement as Chloe remembers receiving Eevee and being told how it couldn't evolve. Due to Eevee and the two boys' eagerness, they decide to go and visit Kiley, the winner of the race.

The three arrive in Lilycove City, heading to the port that hosts the Pokémon Marine Athletics. They get a look of the race's obstacle course before looking for Kiley. They are eventually greeted by him as they spot his Vaporeon swimming around a sea stack while Goh also scans his Pokédex to identify the Pokémon. As their Pokémon swim together, Kiley suggests that they all head out to sea and practice swimming with their Pokémon for the next race. Ash sends out his Dracovish, which playfully bites on his head, Goh sends out Dewgong, and Chloe swims with her Eevee. The entire group is swimming with their Pokémon, though Ash notices his Dracovish is lagging behind and proceeds to push Dracovish while swimming. However, Dracovish quickly sinks to the sea floor and uses its legs to run with incredible speed rather than swim. Dracovish's commotion causes several Gorebyss to swim upward from the sea floor. Goh attempts to catch one of them, though his Poké Ball simply floats upward rather than going towards the Gorebyss. Goh's Dewgong temporarily becomes infatuated by the Gorebyss, though they quickly swim away.

The group then decides to train on the race's obstacle course. The Pokémon first try to hit a bell by jumping from water, with most of the Pokémon fulfilling the task with the exception of Ash's Dracovish and Chloe's Eevee. Pikachu, Grookey, and Eevee then try to bounce off of a trampoline and onto a slide, though they fail, disappointing Grookey. Suddenly, the Water Pokémon present lift the three Pokémon up, helping them slide. The group continue to train, doing other tasks such as pushing a ball through water and surfing before they all settle down for food. While they are sitting together, Chloe asks Kiley how his Vaporeon came to be. He states that he grew a strong bond with Eevee after surfing with it and the evolution using a Water Stone was natural due to his Eevee's connection to the water. Kiley also questions Chloe what her Eevee will evolve into, though Chloe explains that her Eevee is incapable of evolution. Ash and Goh tell her of the many forms Eevee can evolve into, but Chloe states that she wants her Eevee to choose its own path rather than her.

The Pokémon Marine Athletics begins again with Ash, Goh, and Chloe entered as participants. As the race begins, Ash and Goh begin to get competitive while Chloe and her Eevee swim at their own pace. They arrive at the bell activity, needing to jump from the water and hit a bell. Dracovish yet again fails the task as all of the other Pokémon, including Chloe's Eevee who struggled on the activity before, successfully hit the bells and continue with the race. The Pokémon and trainers continue to successfully complete the activities, with Ash and Goh getting more competitive. Dewgong continues to swim through before it spots the group of Gorebyss from earlier and becomes infatuated. However, it spots a Huntail alongside them and quickly becomes angered, leaving behind the activity and attempting to attack the Huntail as Chloe and her Eevee follow.

Ash and Goh cross the finish line and argue over who won before noticing that Goh's Dewgong is nowhere to be seen. Dewgong and Huntail exchange blows before Huntail uses Aqua Tail, hitting Dewgong back and into Chloe. Chloe and the Pokémon rise above the water as Huntail quickly swims towards them. The three take refuge in a small cave as Dewgong uses Ice Beam to hit Huntail back, which Huntail responds with using Rock Tomb to seal up the cave. The three attempt to escape, but their efforts are fruitless as Huntail attempts to break into the cave. Kiley's Vaporeon quickly swims in and knocks Huntail out of the way with Swift. Huntail attempts to use Crunch in retaliation, though Vaporeon quickly moves out of the way. Ash and Goh are seen trying to break the rocks blocking the cave with Dracovish's Water Gun, and Ash says that Water Gun is Dracovish's only move that Ash knows, though Dracovish suddenly uses Fishious Rend instead, instantly breaking through the rocks. The boys meet up with Chloe, but Huntail quickly rushes towards them in the water with Aqua Jet. Kiley's Vaporeon jumps in and uses Hydro Pump to push back Huntail, though it is not enough to keep it from advancing. Chloe's Eevee quickly uses Copycat to use Hydro Pump as well, knocking out Huntail with the combined power.

After the battle, Huntail and Dewgong are seen reconciling. One Gorebyss rises to the water surface as it rushes forward happily. Dewgong, once again attracted to the Gorebyss, welcomes it with open fins as Gorebyss simply swims past it and goes to Huntail instead, leaving Dewgong heartbroken as Goh goes to comfort it. On the beach, Kiley gives Chloe a Water Stone in the form of a necklace, hoping that Chloe may use the stone to possibly evolve Eevee. Chloe offers her Eevee the Water Stone, giving it a choice to evolve or stay the way it is. Eevee decides to stay who it is and remains the same.
