Trials of a Budding Master! (Japanese: カモネギ(おお)いなる試練(しれん)!, HepburnKamonegi Ooinaru Shiren!trans. Farfetch'd's Great Trials!) is the 3rd episode of Pocket Monsters (2019 series), and Pokémon Journeys: The Series of Pokémon Journeys: The Series.

Synopsis[]

Goh continues to grow his Pokémon family by catching a Geodude, while Ash wants to help his Farfetch’d become a Leek Master! Ash also wants to raise his World Coronation Series ranking, so he’s determined to battle as much as possible. When Dozer and Gurdurr challenge Ash and Farfetch’d, Farfetch’d wins using sheer strength. Meanwhile, a mysterious Trainer named Rinto has been watching, and he thinks Farfetch’d is undisciplined. So, Rinto and Gallade challenge Ash and Farfetch’d on the spot! Gallade’s power and finesse prove overwhelming, and Farfetch’d loses. But Ash vows to train hard with Farfetch’d until they meet Rinto again—and until Farfetch’d becomes a Leek Master![1]

Episode plot[]

At Cerise Park, Ash is training Pikachu and Gengar while Dragonite and Lucario are sparring with each other. Meanwhile, Farfetch'd is concentrating then gets up and puts its leek down, which shakes the ground. Ash goes to see Farfetch'd and tells it that its really fired up. However, Farfetch'd uses its leek on Ash and has him land on the ground, then tells him that he felt its power. Goh arrives to tell Ash about an outbreak of Geodude then tells him that if he catches one and he'll be able to evolve it into its two evolution stages. Hearing that the outbreak of Geodude is at Rock Tunnel, Ash decides to bring Farfetch'd with him so it can train, which it agreed.

After arriving at Rock Tunnel, Goh goes looking for a Geodude but didn't have any luck while Farfetch'd starts to train by smashing various rocks in the area. During its training, Farfetch'd almost got Goh hurt but Cinderace saved them and Ash tells the Wild Duck Pokémon to be careful. Goh keeps searching for a Geodude but sill could't find one but Farfetch'd was able to sense one and got one of hide so the he can catch it, which he greatly appreciates. Although he's worry about Farfetch'd attitude, Ash is pleased that its getting some training and Goh comments its power. Ash tells Goh that his Farfetch'd aims to be leek master and the greatest fighter with it as well, much to his surprise. While praising Farfetch'd for its training, Ash gets attack by its leek again, which he comments about its intense power. After Goh comments about Farfetch'd dream, Ash gets a World Coronation Series notice then a Trainer named Dozer appears. Dozer approaches Farfetch'd as he tells how impressed he is with it but its get mad with him and attacks him until his Gurdurr steps in to defend him. After commenting how well they handle with their Pokémon respective held items, Ash and Dozer decided to do a World Coronation Series battle.

During the battle, Farfetch'd and Gurdurr are evenly strong with their items as they exchange attack after attack. However, little did Ash and Farfetch'd know, their battle is being watch by another Trainer and his Gallade. After it was sent to a pile of rocks, Farfetch'd was able to get out of there but its really mad and became more determined to defeat Gurdurr. When their items collided, Farfetch'd leeks splits Gurdurr steel beam into two then defeats it, which brings Ash's World Coordination Series ranking up. After the battle, Dozer lets his Gurdurr hold his pick axe until they can get its steel beam fixes. Also, Dozer sees that Farfetch'd wants more battling as it walks away and Ash asked where it's going. However, Farfetch'd tells Ash to not follow it and goes off to train some more. Ash was told by Dozer that his Pokémon is worth raising because its got a warriors spirit than goes to look for it with Goh and his Pokémon not too far behind him.

Ash finds Farfetch'd training and Goh asked if its tired because its finish a battle, but the latter assures him that its close to achieving its dream of being a leek master. However, Farfetch'd and Pikachu sense something coming as a Gallade appeared and Goh thought he was wild one until his Trainer named Rinto appeared. Rinto tells Ash that he observed his battle with Dozer. Also, Rinto explains to Ash that Farfetch'd is strong but lacks to notice its surroundings. Goh asked Rinto if he appeared to them in order to offer some of advice and he answers maybe. Rinto approaches Farfetch'd as he introduces himself and Gallade to it then asked it if it wants to battle them while Ash asks if its up for it, which it tells them that it is and accepts the offer to battle some more.

During the battle, Farfetch'd could't land a hit against Gallade and took it down with ease. Ash tends to his injured Farfetch'd while Rinto tells him that his Pokémon has a lot of potential but does lack being in sync with him. Rinto tells Ash that he hopes to battle him and Farfetch'd again when they master being in sync with each other then left. At Cerise Park, Ash and Pikachu have leeks of their own so they can help Farfetch'd achieve its dream of being a leek master, which it not only appreciates but also starts to understand that its Trainer and teammates want to help it in anyway they can for it.
