Special Training Time! (Japanese: カイデンとホゲータ 秘密(ひみつ)大特訓(だいとっくん)!, HepburnKaiden to Hogator—Himitsu no Daitokkun!trans. Kaiden and Hogator—Secret Training!) is the 17th episode of Pocket Monsters: Liko and Roy's Departure of Pocket Monsters (2023 series), and Pokémon Horizons: The Series of Pokémon Horizons: The Series.

Synopsis[]

Roy is dismayed that Fuecoco and Wattrel can't seem to get along, and his attempts to calm them down aren't helping, either. But when they all see Captain Pikachu and Charizard having a friendly battle, Roy gets an idea and asks for Cap to battle both his Pokémon at once so they have to work as a team. During the battle, Wattrel debuts its Spark attack, but it and Fuecoco still lose to Cap. Determined to help Wattrel become stronger, Roy begins some special training with his Pokémon—will they be able to come up with a way to hold their own against Cap?[1]

Episode plot[]

At the Brave Olivine, Liko narrates a recap of the previous episode, where she was able to get her Pendant returned by her Sprigatito, although still in shock about the thought that Dot is the real Nidothing.

In the present, she remains scared as she stands outside Dot's door, before Roy comes in, giving her a jump-scare, asking where his Pokémon may have gone. Outside, on a bright sunny day, his Fuecoco and Wattrel are on-board the deck, the latter becoming annoyed at the former's habits, including forcing Wattrel out of sunlight. As soon as the hero trainers catch up, Liko notices the two Pokémon not getting along with one another. Wattrel has had enough and starts pecking and charging at Fuecoco around the deck, prompting Roy to break up the fight. Fuecoco basks in the sun and starts singing with Roy, forcing an ignored Wattrel to Uproar, and thus Roy and Fuecoco to cover their ears, the latter also yelling, with Roy and Liko trying to shout over their voices.

Murdock organises bowls of snacks for each Pokémon pair. Wattrel eats contently, but Fuecoco joins in and munches loudly and blabbers, forcing the former to move out of his way and eat the snack alone. Roy becomes disappointed about his two Pokémon not getting along. Fuecoco brings the bowl over to where Wattrel is, but the latter attacks him once again, causing Friede and Mollie to observe over what's happened, Fuecoco to run away while being attacked, and Roy to go after them. Orla suggests that Liko should catch a second Pokémon, as her Sprigatito is seen eating with a Rockruff, but 'can't imagine' thing about it.

After a Nidothing video segment, Roy and his two Pokémon are onboard the deck, with the former trying to make a truce with both of them, but it only ends up with Roy and Fuecoco singing together, forcing an ignored Wattrel to Uproar, and thus Roy and Fuecoco to cover their ears, however they are all startled as the ship shakes. At the other end of the ship is a battle between Friede's Charizard and Captain Pikachu. Roy and the two Pokémon run to the other side where Friede is, with Roy and Fuecoco becoming awed by watching Charizard's Flamethrower. Pikachu executes a Thunder Punch, to Wattrel's delight, with Roy realizing that Wattrel is observing Pikachu's moves. Friede stops the battle and explains to Roy that battling relieves stress and deepens friendships, and has a brainwave.

Roy's two Pokémon are on the center circle with Pikachu on the opposite side. A two-on-one battle commences, with Roy commanding Fuecoco to use Ember, which Cap dodges, and Wattrel to use Uproar, which forces Cap to cover his ears and jump out of the way. Wattrel runs, gaining momentum, and tries to use Spark on Cap - with Roy identifying the move on his Rotom Phone, but dodges. Roy commands Wattrel to use Spark and Fuecoco to use Tackle simultaneously, with Pikachu dodging. The battle attracts interest from Murdock, Orla, Mollie, Chansey and Liko with her Sprigatito. With Pikachu in the middle surrounded by two of Roy's Pokémon on opposite sides, Roy commands them to use the moves together, but Cap jumps at the right time, causing Roy's two Pokémon to collide into each other and faint. Roy's two Pokémon argue with each other over a disagreement. Wattrel has had enough and starts pecking at Fuecoco, prompting Roy to break up the fight.

Dot rings on Friede's phone, warning about a strong current approaching them up ahead. Friede warns everyone about the turbulence, as they head in. Murdock calls for Roy - holding back an angry Wattrel - to head inside too. Mollie asks Liko to calm down the ship's Pokémon, which she agrees. Inside the ship, Orla demands the Fire-type Pokémon to use their moves at full power to keep the ship stable during the turbulence, while Liko reassures a scared Snorunt and Pawmi; but Mollie is worried about Roy's Pokémon still outside.

Roy, still outside, evaluates the battle the two Pokémon have had until the ship starts tilting, alerting the three to get inside, but Wattrel is blown away by a gust of wind, trying to scale the ship as he swoops his way back in. Roy passes his cap to Fuecoco and holds on to the railing, with Wattrel hanging on with his beak, until Roy manages to rescue him. Liko then head outside while the current still blows, prompting Roy to get in, but Fuecoco and Liko notice a tree branch flying towards Roy. Wattrel lets go of Roy and uses Spark to break the branch, to Roy, Fuecoco and Liko's amazement. Roy catches Wattrel and they all make it safely inside.

Inside a sheltered room with Liko, Roy commends Wattrel's Spark, saying it can 'go up against Cap's Thunder Punch, and win', but wonders why it didn't work well during the battle against Cap, so he goes to ask Dot in her room, which panics Liko. Meanwhile Friede notices the wind stopping. As soon as Dot lets them in, she explains that Wattrel gains power by 'soaring down from a high place', which gives a now-excited Roy a brainwave, so Roy rushes out to the battlefield with his two Pokémon.

In the middle of the battlefield, Roy plants a piece of paper with a plan, but while both Pokémon are put off in anger, they agree to start training. Later that night, the Rising Volt Tacklers are sat by the dinner table waiting for Roy. Liko brings a tray of sandwiches up the long elevator to Roy, Fuecoco and Wattrel, who lie down exhausted. Roy happily takes the tray and offers sandwiches to his two Pokémon as well as himself, explaining to Liko about his 'Secret Training', before resuming his training program.

The mext morning, Roy bursts in to Cap's room full of energy along with his two Pokémon eager to battle Captain Pikachu. Soon, the battlefield is set. Roy, Fuecoco and Wattrel start off their 'Special Triple Tower Combo Attack Surprise' by forming a stack, to the crowd's amazement, but are unimpressed by the move's name. Roy then tosses the duo up in the air. With Wattrel taking Fuecoco up high, Roy commands 'Ember a bunch', in which Fuecoco drops multiple Embers down towards Cap. He then commands Wattrel to let go of Fuecoco and fly high in the air while Pikachu stays alert. Roy commands Ember as soon as Fuecoco lands on the ground, but Cap dodges by jumping, which at the point Roy commands Spark for his Wattrel. While Wattrel swoops down, Pikachu sets up a Thunder Punch, which blocks Spark and hits the Storm Petrel Pokémon. As soon as they collide in mid-air, Roy commands Tackle for Fuecoco. Fuecoco jumps up high to charge at Pikachu, but in slow-motion, Cap propels its tail to dodge the attack; causing both of Roy's Pokémon to fall to the ground and faint.

Roy slumps in defeat, while Friede praises all three Pokémon for their good showing and put's the Captain's hat back on his Pikachu. Murdock and Orla give Roy praise, along with Liko.

The next day, Roy says to his Pokémon how close they were to defeating Cap, but promises they'll go again. As Fuecoco and Roy sing, Wattrel joins in the tune to their delight, which also pleases Liko. Over at the battlefield, Cap charges around the battlefield full of energy, in-front of Friede's eyes.
