Trivia

  • While not an evolution of Passimian, it is considered a counterpart of it, as it is a version exclusive like Passimian as well as being of two types that one (Normal) weak to Passimian and the other (Psychic) strong against it.
  • Oranguru is one of three Pokemon that are Normal/Psychic type. The other two are Girafarig and Meloetta (in Aria Forme).
  • Oranguru drew comparisons to Harambe upon its debut, as previously Harambe (a gorilla shot and killed at a zoo) was petitioned by fans to be commemorated as a Pokemon. However, the official Pokemon Company has denied this.

Origin

Oranguru is based on an orangutan. It is also loosely based on Uesugi Kenshin and Zhuge Liang.

Etymology

  • Oranguru is a combination of the words Orangutan (a species of primates) and Guru (a teacher that is wise and influential).
  • Its Japanese name Yareutan is a combination of Yare (means “do it”) and Orangutan. If speaks “yareyare”, it means “whew/good grief”.

Names in other languages

  • English, Italian and Spainish: Oranguru
  • French: Gouroutan
  • German: Kommandutan
  • Chinese: 智挥猩 (Mainland, simplified) / 智揮猩 (Mainland, traditional / Taiwan)
  • Korean: 하랑우탄
