As the Gym Leader, I can't express how frustrated I am. But, as a father, it makes me both happy and a little sad. It's odd.

Norman lives in Petalburg City of the Hoenn region. He is an expert on Normal-type Pokémon, from which his name is derived. He is the player's father in the Generation III games and the Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire remakes.

Appearance[]

Norman is a tall, lean, middle-aged man with short black hair with a single fringe at the center with three edges and dark eyes.

Generation III[]

Norman wears a dark red, long jacket with a black collar, blue-gray trousers and black boots.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire[]

Norman wears a white T-shirt that is covered by a gray and maroon jacket, with the sleeves rolled up. He also wears charcoal trousers with elasticated ankles and pair of geta - dark brown flip-flops with black straps.

Personality[]

As a stern fatherly figure, Norman takes his role of Gym Leader very seriously. He and his Pokémon are a force not to be underestimated. However, relentless as he may be, Norman is a fair and simple man who takes advantage of every attribute his team has.

Norman is good friends with Professor Birch.

Etymology[]

The name Norman comes from "normal".

His Japanese name, Senri, could originate from "center" (as the Normal-type is often considered the neutral, central type), or 千里 (senri, 1000 ri) an ancient East Asian unit of measurement that was about 1640 feet or 500 meters, often used to symbolize a long journey, possibly referring to Norman's hopes for his child. Following the plant-based naming with most Gym Leaders, it may also include 仙蓼 (senryou, the Japanese name for the sarcandra herb).

Pokémon Ruby Version and Pokémon Sapphire Version[]

Norman and Wally meet RS

Norman meeting Wally for the first time, in Pokémon Ruby Version and Pokémon Sapphire Version

Norman is first mentioned on a television news report featuring him at the start of the game. When the player comes downstairs from their bedroom, their mom urges them to watch the report, although the player is too late and sees only the last part of the outro. Norman is also mentioned by Professor Birch in conversation when the player first meets him.

Norman is first seen inside of the Petalburg City Gym, where the player has to visit on their first visit in Petalburg City. Shortly after the player starts talking to Norman, Wally arrives. Wally wants a companion on his way to visit his relatives in Verdanturf Town, so Norman agrees to lend Wally a level 7 Zigzagoon, which can only use Tackle, and a Poké Ball to help Wally catch his first Pokémon, Ralts. Back at Petalburg City Gym, minutes after Wally catches the Ralts, he thanks Norman and returns the Zigzagoon to him.

Norman only wishes to battle the player if they have four Gym Badges. Norman has different lines of dialogue for if the player first talks to them without any Gym Badges, then with one Gym Badge, and lastly for if the player talks to him with two or three Gym Badges.

In battle, Norman can use up to two Hyper Potions. After losing, Norman gives both the Balance Badge and TM042 (Facade) to the player. Norman expresses frustration from losing, but then describes himself as feeling both happy and somewhat sad.

Pokémon Emerald Version[]

Norman has the same role as in Pokémon Ruby Version and Pokémon Sapphire Version. Like the other Gym Leaders, Norman can be rematched, where he uses up to three Full Restores in each battle, instead of up to two Hyper Potions like in his Gym battle.

Pokémon Black Version 2 and Pokémon White Version 2[]

Norman is one of many participants in the Pokémon World Tournament. He can be fought in the Hoenn Leaders Tournament, the World Leaders Tournament, and the Type Expert Tournament as one of the Normal-type specialists. In Japanese and Korean versions only, Norman can also be fought in Gathered! Gym Leader!.

In a line of dialogue, Norman reveals that Olivine City was where he and his family moved from before arriving in Littleroot Town.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire[]

Norman has the same base role as in the Generation III games. His gym is renovated and Norman has a different artwork when battling Norman for the Gym Badge. The Zigzagoon that Norman loans to Wally is level 7 as before, but is always a female and knows Growl, Tail Whip, and Sand Attack in addition to Tackle.

When defeated, Norman hands out the Balance Badge as before, this time alongside TM067 (Retaliate).

After obtaining the Eon Ticket, when the player character has obtained the Mega Bracelet, they can speak to Norman, who will escort them to Slateport Harbor to go to Southern Island and catch either Latias in Pokémon Omega Ruby or Latios in Pokémon Alpha Sapphire.
