Nessa's name references Loch Ness from Scotland, known for its fabled sea monster. Rurina, her Japanese name, likely comes from 瑠璃 (ruri, lapis lazuli, a blue gemstone) and "marina" (a type of harbor).
Biography[]
Sword & Shield arc[]
Nessa was in Hulbury City's Stadium. Hearing the news that Leon, the Champion, has recommended two Trainers to take on the Gym Challenge, Nessa became quite surprised.[1]
As Nessa has finished her training, Sonia called her on the phone. Sonia told her about the challengers that faced Milo, half of whom lost the battle. Nessa was pleased, thinking she could show that she was stronger than Milo by defeating the rest of the challengers, while Sonia noticed that the two Gym Leaders saw each other as rivals. Sonia wanted to invite Nessa, so they could chat, but Nessa refused, since she was quite busy, working on her video to sponsor Hulbury town. Still, Nessa asked of her to come to her anytime. Henry Sword showed an advertisement featuring Nessa, who sponsored the town's monuments, way of living, famous dishes and activities.
Marvin was surprised to hear that model was Nessa, who was also the Gym Leader. At the stadium, Nessa confronted Henry Sword in the Gym Battle, where the two sides sent Twiggy and Toxapex. Twiggy failed in baiting Toxapex to attack it, and as Twiggy attacked Toxapex, it got poisoned. Nessa smiled, for Toxapex's Baneful Bunker protected the Pokémon from attacks. However, Twiggy used Sunny Day to unveil Toxapex and defeat it with Branch Poke. Nessa was impressed by Henry Sword Sword's strategies, and sent a Drednaw out. While Henry Sword Sword Sword believed the battle would be easy, due to having the type advantage, Nessa made him doubt his words, as she Gigantamaxed her Drednaw.[2]
Nessa had her Drednaw Gigantamaxed, which let the latter attack Twiggy with Max Strike. Twiggy evaded the attacks, until Gigantamax Drednaw fired a G-Max Stonesurge, which wounded Twiggy and limited its movement, due to sharp stones surrounding it. Henry Sword Dynamaxed his Twiggy, whose speed let it evade Gigantamax Drednaw's attacks. However, the latter extended its neck, which let it bite Twiggy. Twiggy used one of the sticks to block the attack, and flung the other one to hit Gigantamax Drednaw, which fainted from the attack. Nessa was frustrated, but realized Henry Sword Sword drew Drednaw out to take the opportunity to defeat it. Henry Sword Sword Sword confirmed that, since Nessa was the type to switch offense and defense rapidly. Nessa felt insulted by that remark, but shook hands with Henry Sword Sword Sword Sword, since he did defeat her fairly.
A moment later, Nessa faced Casey in battle. Her Gigantamax Drednaw, who had not recovered from the earlier battle, got defeated by Casey's Dynamax Scorbunny, who evolved into a Raboot during the battle. Due to this, Nessa postponed all of her matches to have Drednaw recover, and called her friend, Sonia, to meet with her in the meantime.[3] After Hop defeated Kabu, the latter, accompanied by Milo and Nessa, visited him and Casey. The three Gym Leaders wanted to congratulate Hop and Casey, for many challengers that had faced Kabu were defeated, and lost the will to complete the Gym Challenge. Kabu admitted he wanted to see them off personally, and yelled out loud: he wanted to see the two complete the challenge, having faith in them. His shouting caused Nessa and others to become stunned.[4]
Nessa was at Hammerlocke when the Darkest Day occurred. Leon and Raihan defeated the rampaging Dynamaxed Pokémon, astounding Nessa, for she didn't even have a chance to partake in the battle. However, she noticed a large being atop the tower, wondering if it, too, was a part of the Darkest Day. As they tried to enter the power plant, Sonia noticed Shielbert and Sordward before they entered the facility, which sealed itself. In order to find another entrance, the group flew on Leon's Charizard and Raihan's Flygon, eventually encountering Henry Sword, Casey and the rest of the group. After meeting up with them, the group went inside the power plant, where they saw Chairman Rose proclaiming the success of his mission.[5] Nessa and others confronted Chairman Rose, who stated that while certain crimes were committed, it was all to protect the Galar region, to accumulate Galar particles. Since the exit was sealed, Nessa instead watched the battle of Eternatus against Sordward and Shielbert.[6]
Oleana, who came out of the elevator, asked for their help, which made Casey angry at her for luring them in and trapping them. Oleana reminded that Rose needed help, for he was trying to save Galar from its devastating future. Others had their doubts about this, to which Oleana admitted that even if Rose's intentions were benevolent, he could still make a wrong decision and suffer, to which Melony noted she was right. The group went to the top of the power plant, where Eternatus defeated Rose. With the fires spreading, Nessa had Quagsire and Dreadnaw extinguish the fire, letting Raihan and Leon to come in and rescue Rose. The group, including Nessa, joined in the fight to take Eternatus down. Sonia went to assist them, but Nessa held her back, as it was too dangerous. As Eternatus didn't suffer much, a burst of energy was emitted: a beam was shot into the sky, transforming Eternatus into its "serious mode".[7]
Nessa continued to battle Eternatus, but it emitted a powerful beam that defeated her Drednaw in one hit. To continue the fight, she sent out Barraskewda, but it also got defeated by Eternatus. Nessa became overwhelmed, seeing how strong Eternatus is for the entire group to fight it, as type advantages meant nothing. As two Pokémon arrived—Zacian and Zamazenta—Piers had Nessa use a Revival Herb to restore his Malamar, warping everyone to safety. Thus, she continued to watch Zacian and Zamazenta battle Eternatus.[8] Just as Zacian and Zamazenta collided with Eternatus, a bright light flashed. By the time the rest of the Gym Leaders came to the top, they found everyone, including Nessa, unconscious. The group was taken to the hospital in Hammerlocke, where they were recovering.[9] With the cure from Isle of Armor delivered, Nessa was cured from the poison. However, her hair has grown very long, to which Sonia took a picture of the group and sent it to Casey and Hop, who were working at Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra, respectively.[10]
