Nando and Budew encountered Ash, Brock and Dawn at a Pokémon Center. Nando introduced himself as a traveling bard, who wanted to spread joy. Having an argument with Ash earlier, Dawn wanted to prove she was strong, and challenged Nando to a battle. Since Dawn wanted to participate in Contests, Nando proposed to have a battle similar to that rules. Piplup used Peck on Budew, who dodged. Budew retaliated with Bullet Seed, while Piplup avoided the attack and stroke Budew with Bubble Beam. Since Budew took little damage from it, it launced a Solar Beam before Piplup could use Peck, and the latter was defeated.
Budew was healed at the Pokémon Center, and later helped the heroes in battling Team Rocket, by using Bullet Seed. As Ash and Dawn continued to bicker, Nando calmed them down, and accepted Ash's challenge. The next day, Budew battled Ash's Pikachu, firing a Bullet Seed on him. Budew then used Mega Drain on Pikachu, who retaliated with Thunderbolt. In that moment, Budew evolved into a Roselia. Ash and Nando's battle, in which Budew was used, was remembered by Ash, Brock and Dawn, as they were going to Snowpoint City.
Continuing the battle, Roselia used Sunny Day, followed with Solar Beam. However, Pikachu dodged, and used Iron Tail to slam Roselia and defeat it. Budew's evolution into Roselia was remembered by Ash, Brock and Dawn, as they were going to Snowpoint City. Roselia battled Gardenia's Turtwig in a Gym Battle, which Nando won.
Roselia was used in Hearthome City's Contest, where it performed with Kricketune in the battle rounds and they won Nando his second ribbon.
Nando used Sunflora and Roserade, giving him a victory, to advance to the semi-final round. Roserade was used to battle Ash's Staraptor during the first round of the Sinnoh League. Roserade used Sweet Scent on Staraptor, then fired Magical Leaf to strike it. Roserade fired a Solar Beam, but Staraptor dodged. It then charged with Brave Bird, defeating Roserade in an instant.
