Mt. Silver Cave is a location introduced in Generation II.
Description[]
Mt. Silver Cave refers to the cave and summit area of Mt. Silver as of Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version, but still appears in the Generation II games nonetheless.
It is where many high-level wild Pokémon live. The area is so dangerous that Pokémon Trainers are forbidden to enter unless they have all sixteen Gym Badges. When the player has received all of them, Professor Oak gives them permission to travel to Mt. Silver and enter the Mt. Silver Cave.
In Pokémon Gold Version and Pokémon Silver Version and Pokémon Crystal Version, the route to Mt. Silver is rough and no HMs are required to reach it, so the player can travel through the grassy area before they reach the Pokémon Center just outside the entrance to Mt. Silver.
Inside, the cave itself is completely engulfed in darkness, requiring Flash to be used so that the player can see the first room. Many Pokémon live in the cave, including rare ones that do not appear elsewhere in Johto, such as Larvitar and Misdreavus.
Unlike other caves in the Generation II games, the Mt. Silver Cave has only one way to enter and exit, but it goes deep into the mountain. Once the player has reached the final room, they will meet Red, former champion of the Kanto Pokémon League, who will silently challenge them to a battle. Red's team consists of Pikachu, Snorlax, Venusaur, Blastoise, Charizard, and Espeon. When defeated, Red will react to his loss with surprise before disappearing.
Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version[]
Aside from being separately defined, Mt. Silver Cave has received several changes in the remakes. It is shown to be much larger than in the Generation II games. Flash is no longer required, but Rock Climb is required to access the higher levels. The player is often required to venture to the slopes of the side of the mountain so they can climb higher. Moltres has also been added on 1F, though the player needs to have Pokémon that can use Rock Climb and Waterfall to reach it. If the player does not catch Moltres, they have to re-enter the Hall of Fame for it to appear again.
Once the player reaches the outside summit, they can challenge Red, just like in the Generation II games. However, unlike those games, the heavy snowfall on the mountain becomes the Hail weather condition in battle, and deals damage to every Pokémon except Ice-types (Hail will not begin to fall during the battle if Red is fought on days where diamond dust is active). Red's team is mostly the same, except he has a Lapras instead of an Espeon. Red will reappear if the player has beaten the Elite Four and Pokémon Champion in a rematch.
