Swampert (Japanese: ラグラージ, Hepburn: Raguraaji) (SWAM-pert[1]) is the Water/Ground-type First partner Pokémon of the Hoenn region, introduced in Generation III.
Biology[]
Physiology[]
Swampert is an amphibious quadruped Pokémon and just like Mudkip and Marshtomp it too resembles both a mudskipper and an axolotl. It has a long bluish/white body with a lighter blue underbelly. It has four appendages that are a cross between legs and fins. With these, it sometimes stands upright on its hind legs, and at other times is on all fours like a quadruped animal. Each has an orange oval on it. Swampert has large, fan-shaped fins above its eyes and a huge axe-like fin growing out of its behind as a prosaic tail would. It also has a pair of orange gills on either side of its face. It also has very small orange eyes.
Mega Swampert[]
this Pokémon gains considerable bulk. Its upper body and arms become more muscular, bulging compared to its squat lower body. The orange padding on Swampert's thighs vanish, but it gains two additional patches of orange padding on each wrist and another patch on each shoulder. This padding and its gills become a darker, redder shade of orange, while the gills are now larger and bulbous, with filaments extending past its mouth. The black fins on its head are thicker and now extend down past its shoulders. The black tail fin is still shaped like an upward-turned fan, but it now forms a short ridge that extends up to this Pokémon's forehead, flanked on either side by the aforementioned head-fins. The webbed digits on Mega Swampert's "hands" take on a black color and now feature better defined articulations.
Behavior[]
Swampert boasts the physical strength to easily drag a boulder weighing more than a ton, batter down opponents, and swim faster than a jet ski. It has keen eyesight, enabling it to see in murky waters. Swampert also has the ability to predict storms, sensing subtle differences in the sounds of waves and tidal winds with its fins. When a storm is approaching, Swampert will pile up boulders to protect its nest. It makes its nests on beautiful beaches. The reason Swampert covers itself in mud is that it wants to keep its skin moist. waters. Though strong and aggressive at times, Swampert can still be just as playful as their pre-evolutions; indeed, it is this combination of traits that makes them such popular First partner Pokémon.
Special Abilities[]
Swampert has Torrent ability, which lets it have its Water-type moves boosted when damaged enough. When it mega evolves, its ability becomes Swift Swim.
Evolution[]
Swampert is the final evolution of the Hoenn First partner Pokémon Mudkip. It evolves from Marshtomp at level 36. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Swampert can further evolve into Mega Swampert if it holds the Swampertite.

Minor[]
Voice actors[]
In the anime, Swampert was voiced by Scottie Ray in the 4Kids Entertainment dub.
Other[]
Swampert is playable in Mystery Dungeon games by evolving Marshtomp. But much like Lucario, he has no role in the main story at all.
Trivia[]
- It has the highest base stat total of all fully evolved First partner Pokémon.
- Swampert is the only fully-evolved Hoenn starter that isn't playable in Pokkén Tournament.
Origin[]
Swampert possesses traits of both mudskippers and axolotls. It also has traits of swamp monsters, such as the Gill-man which first appeared in the 1954 film Creature from the Black Lagoon. The fins on its head and tail are likely based on tessen, Japanese weapons that consisted of metal blades arranged into a folding fan-like arrangement. Its stance also appears similar to that of sumo wrestlers.
Etymology[]
This Pokémon's name comes from swamp, a place where many Water/Ground-type Pokémon would likely be found, and rampart, meaning a fortification, which probably refers to its habit of piling up boulders to protect itself. It could also come from the word expert, as it is very capable in a swamp-like area.
Ragurāji likely comes from "lagoon," a shallow body of water separated from other bodies by reefs or islands, and "large."
