For the variant appearing in the games, see Marnie (Galar).

Marnie is a character appearing in "Sword & Shield Chapter" of Pokémon Adventures.

Appearance[]

This section, or a part of it, has been transcluded from Marnie (Galar); any changes involving it should be made there instead. /

Marnie is a slim young girl with emerald-green eyes, dark-black hair, and very pale skin. Her hair is mostly short and flat, matching her head's shape. At the back of her neck, her hair becomes thinner and forms two pointed ends. Marnie has a peculiar hairstyle, with three right frontal bangs reaching her right eye's top; a partially shaved front left and back, illustrating three sharp lower teeth and four interlocked claws respectively; two small weakly inward-curved horns of hair with centermost horns larger on each of left and right; and below, messy twintails which separate into two locks at her ears' top, one small and neck reaching and one large and shoulder reaching, and terminate in bends toward her neck's back. Each set of horns and twintails is secured with a crimson ribbon.

For clothing, Marnie wears an outfit that seems to be a mix of a tough and cute style. It consists of a studded black leather Gothic jacket—waist length with knuckle-length sleeves—featuring a long outward folded collar extending to the breasts' lowest point with six curved edges each containing one circular silver stud on their center; instantly below the collar at the right, five vertically joined diamond-shaped silver studs reaching the jacket's lower end; at each of the jacket's lower left and right, one black decorative bow supported by a black strap with its compact edges remodeled into small simple silver crowns with three outward facing edges; and, on the sleeves, from the jacket's to the sleeves' lower end altitudes, a descending pattern of one short vertical silver line and one sideways diamond-shaped silver stud, ceasing at the fourth line's end; underneath the jacket, a pink fabric mini-dress which assumes a heart shape at the top, appropriating both breasts, whose hem ends in eight equally wide inverted semicircles, with one inverted triangular hole cut above each upper vertex; and at her feet, matching black leather high-heeled boots, each with a pointed silver heel, a pink sole, a diagonally upward-pointing toe, a raised cuff, and a black strap amidst the foot region decorated with three equidistant studs, one on each of the far left and right sides, and one at its center. Marnie also carries a small crimson leather backpack which matches her hair ribbons, with two shoulder straps, a silver bow with a crimson center modeled after the jacket's bows at the top, and a black diamond at the lower center, touched on each of its sides by crimson straps containing two circular silver studs each, with each stud on the center of one black leather circle underneath the straps.

For accessories, she wears a black leather choker around her neck with a frontal silver ring suspended by a small vertical bar of silver, with the ring possessing three equidistant outward spikes, along with a small diamond-shaped crimson piercing on her left ear, false eyelashes, and black matte nail polish.

Personality[]

Marnie is a decent Trainer. Her punk appearance reflects the fact that she feels pressure from people of Spikemuth and her brother, who expect a lot from her as a participant to the Gym Challenge. However, she doesn't like an unfair advantage, and scolds her fans—Team Yell grunts—who try to get other participants to drop out.

Etymology[]

Marnie and Marii both derive from the prefix mal, meaning bad. They may also derive from Rosmarnius, following the plant theming with names.

Biography[]

Sword & Shield arc[]

At the Wild Area, Team Yell Grunts were holding posters of Marnie, their "illustrious goddess". They announced they would support their idol during her Gym Challenge, as they went to attack Henry and Casey, who were also participating.[1] Henry and Casey believed that this competitor sent these people to harass them, due to the popularity they were gaining.[2] Marnie was waiting with Hop and Bede at Turffield's entrance, blocked by a boulder, when Henry, Casey, Marvin and Sonia approached them. The five Trainers decided to work together, as they went to destroy the boulder, which was simply relocated. As Marnie went to the stadium, she was a bit annoyed by Hop and Casey's shouting. She took her seat with them, along with Bede, Sonia and Marvin, to watch Henry's battle against Milo.[3]

Marnie continued to observe Henry's match against Milo, where it was mentioned that Henry was approved by the Champion to take on the Gym Challenge. As Bede and Hop were arguing about the importance of being endorsed by the Chairman or the Champion, Marnie shouted at both of them to shut up, due to them being loud. She continued to watch the battle, making comments about the Dynamaxed Pokémon. Later, she participated in the Gym Battle, in which Team Yell grunts took an interest in to cheer her on.[4] Having arrived in Hulbury, Marvin and Casey didn't see Marnie, Bede nor Hop around, unlike in Turffield.[5] Marnie later faced Kabu in a Gym Battle. Her Morpeko won the battle to his Centiskorch.[6]

That battle took an interest to Raihan, who wondered if she would successful enough to face him in battle.[7] Marnie went to Stow-on-Side to battle Allister next. Since he was absent, Marnie faced Bea instead, and had a lot of trouble dealing with her Hitmontop. After the battle was over, she went to Glimwood Tale, where she encountered Team Yell grunts battling Allister and Casey. Marnie scolded the grunts, since they wanted to eliminate competition so Marnie could compete for the championship. After the trouble was over, she went to Ballonlea, where she encountered Henry and the rest, and explained them her tale. She prepared herself for Opal's match, as Casey was battling her first.[8] After finishing the battle at Circhester, Marnie met up with Hop. Marnie asked if Hop would accompany her to Spikemuth, surprising Hop, and made him blush. Marnie admitted she would've asked Henry to join them as well. Hop decided to go with her, if it was not too much trouble, whereas Marnie felt herself in a difficult position due to her sibling.

She spoke with Hop about his view towards his brother, Leon, who was the Champion, feeling Hop didn't like him much since he never spoke about him. Hop denied that, heartily stating he was Leon's biggest fan and wanted to be like him. He also admitted Leon offered the Gym Challenge endorsement to him, but Hop refused, thinking any loss would also negatively reflect on Leon. Marnie smiled, seeing Hop was like her, since her brother and people from Spikemuth were worried about her, and she had to carry on her successes to make them proud. However, this also gave a lot of pressure on her, which made Hop think of Leon, who had a friend during the Gym Challenge but the two parted ways after the latter lost. Still, Hop was confident that Leon still supported him even after having the endorsement rejected. Hop then asked Marnie why did she propose to Hop to go to Spikemuth, to which Marnie responded that neither Hop nor Henry would be able to enter that town.[9]

Marnie and Hop reached Spikemuth. The former expected the gates to be shut, surprising Hop. Marnie noted it was quiet inside, until she heard Casey shouting to Henry to dodge. Marnie became alert, and went with Hop through a backdoor entrance to Spikemuth. She arrived in time to stop "bro" from hurting the two men, who attacked Sonia and held Casey's Pokémon. After the fight was over, Hop asked Marnie about her "bro", to which she and Piers admitted that they were siblings. The rest of the group was in shock, to which Marnie reminded Hop about his relation towards Leon, whereas Piers added that a rule was added that challengers' privacy was kept a secret. The group also talked about Sonia, who suffered from the two men's attack.[10]

The group waited as Piers called Leon. After the call, Piers explained that he had to go meet Chairman Rose and talk with him. He explained that the most probable thing to happen was to have the Gym Challenge suspended, though this all depended on Chairman Rose. The rest decided to join Piers, since this was more about the Gym Challenge than they thought. The group went to Wyndon, meeting with the rest of the Gym Leaders at Rose Tower. Hearing a commotion from inside the tower, the group met up with Opal and Bede, who tried to get Oleana out of the way. Oleana claimed that Rose was absent, but as the group did not believe her words, she sent her Pokémon to attack. Hop wanted to join, but Piers dragged him, as they were using this distraction. At the elevator, Piers was nearly attacked by Oleana's Garbodor, so Bede went in the elevator instead. While going up, the group asked about Bede's outfit. Despite Bede's anger, the group was glad to hear that he was training to become a Gym Leader.

On the top of the tower, the group saw that Rose was absent. Suddenly, a recording of Chairman Rose was shown, confirming that he was absent. However, he made it clear that he wanted to start the Darkest Day, but at the Champion Cup, but was forced to execute this plan at an earlier date. He made it clear this was to protect the Galar region in a thousand years. He asked of the group to continue their efforts to start a new heroic legend, and then ended the broadcast. The group then saw that a beam of light was shot out of Hammerlocke, triggering the Darkest Day, for Power Spots were forming around Galar region. Descending down, the group saw that Pokémon were Dynamaxed, and were causing panic. Oleana ended the battle with the Gym Leaders, stating that they could visit Rose at Hammerlocke. The group noted that they couldn't use the monorail or the Corviknight taxi, due to the terror. In that moment, Professor Magnolia came with her motorhome, and asked of the group to go in as they rode to Hammerlocke.[11]

Marnie was in the motorhome heading to Hammerlocke, which, due to a collapsed bridge, took a bumpy ride on the railway. She asked Piers about helping Trainers back home to battle Dynamaxed Pokémon, to which Piers stated he would go only if they call him. Having arrived, Marnie went outside the motorhome to join Henry, who dashed away. She also briefly saw Bede casually handing money to the railway officer for illegal driving on the railway, commenting she knew why Opal chose him as a successor. After meeting up with Leon, Sonia, Nessa and Raihan, the group went inside the power plant, where they saw Chairman Rose proclaiming the success of his mission.[12] Marnie and others confronted Chairman Rose, who stated that while certain crimes were committed, it was all to protect the Galar region, to accumulate Galar particles. Since the exit was sealed, Marnie tried to find another way out, until she noticed Oleana coming through the elevator.[13]

Oleana, who came out of the elevator, asked for their help, which made Casey angry at her for luring them in and trapping them. Oleana reminded that Rose needed help, for he was trying to save Galar from its devastating future. Others had their doubts about this, to which Oleana admitted that even if Rose's intentions were benevolent, he could still make a wrong decision and suffer, to which Melony noted she was right. The group went to the top of the power plant, where Eternatus defeated Rose. With the fires spreading, the Gym Leaders arrived and stopped the fire, letting Raihan and Leon to come in and rescue Rose. The group, including Marnie, joined in the fight to take Eternatus down. However, Eternatus didn't suffer much, and a burst of energy was emitted: a beam was shot into the sky, transforming Eternatus into its "serious mode".[14]

Marnie continued to battle Eternatus, but it emitted a powerful beam that defeated her Morgrem in one hit. As she and Hop prepared themselves to send another Pokémon, Piers had his Malamar warp them away from the battlefield before Malamar got defeated by Eternatus. The two noticed two Pokémon arriving: Zacian and Zamazenta. Seeing Zacian and Zamazenta being able to confront Eternatus to deal it damage, both Hop and Marnie cheered on for these two Pokémon. Piers smiled to see his sister cheering on the Pokémon, thinking that now that these Pokémon would surely win.[15] Just as Zacian and Zamazenta collided with Eternatus, a bright light flashed. By the time the rest of the Gym Leaders came to the top, they found everyone, including Marnie, unconscious. The group was taken to the hospital in Hammerlocke, where they were recovering. However, Marnie recovered quickly, and met up with Marvin, Magnolia, Casey and Hop, where they were informed that Henry went missing, as did the relics and the Legendary Pokémon.

Later, Marnie went to see Hop and Leon at the latter's house. Hop shook his head, for Leon had not recovered yet. Marnie admitted that Piers was also recovering at the hospital. With the news of Chairman Rose stepping down from the position of leader of Macro Cosmos, Marnie claimed that Leon could become the chairman to permit the Challenge Cup to continue. Hop refused, stating that he would rather defeat Leon first, surprising Marnie for his desire. Still, she joked that she'd defeat Leon first, which upset Hop a bit. Suddenly, their conversation was interrupted by a call: Marvin and Casey found clues on Henry's disappearance. Thus, Hop and Marnie regrouped with Casey and Marvin. Casey believed that Henry and the relics were located either at Crown Tundra or Island of Armor, but did not know which artifact was located in these two places, and neither where Henry was located. Bede arrived, doubting Casey that this was accurate, for both places sounded dangerous. Hop became angry at Bede for making Casey worried. Bede cut the talk, proposing to split the team to search both islands, to which Oleana showed tickets to go to both of these places.[16]

Marnie was paired with Hop and Bede to find Henry at Crown Tundra. As the two boys started to argue, Marnie became tired of their bickering, but they all stopped when Casey shouted out that they'd find Henry. After parting ways with the rest, Marnie took a ride on the train with Bede and Hop.[17] As they took the train, the group noticed a suspicious girl walking in, who was trying to hide from an old man. Bede, Hop and Marnie gave parts of their clothes to disguise her, which worked. The old man came in looking for her, but failed to notice her in the disguise. Marnie and Hop compared him to Chairman Rose, but Bede angirly cut their talk. The girl thanked them, and added that man was her father. As the old man returned, Bede removed the girl's disguise, upsetting her. Marnie claimed this was a cute gesture from Bede, who blushed, but she felt bad for the girl.

As they came to Crown Tundra, the group encountered the girl, who called Bede a traitor, much to his displeasure. Marnie challenged the old man, Peony, to have his daughter roam free. Peony accepted her challenge; Bede wanted to battle, but Marnie stepped in, thinking he'd lose on purpose. Thus, Hop and Bede watched this confrontation, as Marnie sent Morgrem to battle Peony's Copperajah.[18] Due to type disadvantage, Peony's Copperajah pinned Morgrem down. Others commented how someone else could've battled Peony, due to type disadvantage, which nerved Marnie a lot. However, Marnie's Morgrem evolved into a Grimmsnarl and defeated Copperajah. Peonia became elated, thanking Marnie and went on her way. Peony thought it was a shame, but then reconsidered that he would've liked to see Peonia independent. Bede thought it was a good idea to join Peony, much to others' surprise. Hop was against that, but Marnie reminded that Peony could be their guide around Crown Tundra, while searching for the Rusted Sword and Shield. Bede boasted that that was what he was thinking about. Peony let them accompany him, as they headed to Freezington. On their way, Marnie informed others that Casey and Marvin have found Henry.[19]

Peony took the group to the lodge in Freezington, where they met the mayor. The mayor stated that they already prepared the lodge, and let Peony know that having more kids was no problem at all. He looked at the curly-haired Bede, mistaking him as Peony's daughter, which made Marnie and Hop laugh. He then thought Marnie was Peony, but stopped, and let the group come in. Inside, the group was glad to see warm dinner on the table. As they were eating, Peony told them as part of his "Peony Exploration Team", they would go after Legendary Pokémon: a group of titans, three mysterious birds and the King of Bountiful Harvests. Bede, Hop and Marnie introduced themselves to Peony, who learned their names.[20] Having settled in the lodge, Hop received a message that Leon and the Gym Leaders were cured. Bede and Marnie joined in, and the trio was in shock to see that the group that received the cure had overgrown hair.[21]

Due to Peony falling asleep, Hop, Marnie and Bede went alone to investigate the ruins, where they caught Regirock, Regice and Registeel. They moved to investigate a giant tree to find the Rusted Sword. Much to their surprise, they found three giant bird Pokémon resembling Moltres, Zapdos and Articuno. Uncertain which Pokémon had clues about the artifact, the trio ran off to confront these Legendary Pokémon.[22] As the trio fought, Hop noticed that Moltres was starting to fly off, and latched onto its leg. Hop flew away, leaving Marnie and Bede behind.[23]
