The shape (body style in Generation IV and form in Generation V) is an attribute that all Pokémon have. The amount of body styles is defined in the video games, and there are only 14 groups of Pokémon, each group defining the Pokémon by the characteristics of their bodies, fundamentally the limbs.
The first games that included this classification were Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, and it has been present since then in all the main games of Pokémon. The classification is found in the Pokédex.

Trivia[]
- Volcarona has six wings, a characteristic that doesn't belong to any shape, but it's possible it was cataloged in shape 13 because it's where its characteristic fit the most.
- Lickilicky is in shape 12 despite having a tail.
- Greninja is also in shape 12 despite having a vestigial tail.
- Togetic, Victini, Celebi, Illumise, and Heracross are found in shape 12 despite having wings.
- Charizard, Druddigon, Zekrom, Dragonite, Volbeat, and Hydreigon have wings, and even so, are cataloged in shape 6, instead of shape 9. So, they're cataloged with Pokémon without wings.
- Palpitoad is cataloged in shape 6, despite having no arms.
- There were no Generation VI Pokémon that were added to shape 3.
- Slowbro and Pinsir are the only Pokémon that change shapes while Mega Evolving, changing from 6 to 4 and from 12 to 13 respectively.
- Budew is cataloged in shape 12, suggesting that the vines around its head are arms.
- Crobat and Vibrava are the only Pokémon with shape 13 to not be a Bug-type.
- Additionally, Crobat is the only Pokémon with shape 13 that is not based on an insect.
- Volcarona is the only Pokémon with shape 13 that has six wings instead of four.
