Charizard has been with Leon since his childhood and youth, when he was a Charmander and then a Charmeleon.[1] During one match in Leon's youth as a Charmander, it was defeated by Sonia's Rookidee.[2]

Charizard is Leon's ace Pokémon, helping him win many battles and holding on to his title of being the number one Trainer.

During a match against Lance, Charizard was Gigantamaxed to face his Dynamaxed Gyarados, eventually defeating it with its mix of G-Max and Max attacks.

After handling a Gigantamaxed Drednaw, Leon sent Charizard out to battle Ash's Pikachu. Ash proceeded to Gigantamax Pikachu during the match, who hit Charizard with a super-effective G-Max Volt Crash. However, Charizard was able to endure the attack before being Gigantamaxed itself, where it used its signature G-Max Wildfire to finish him off, allowing Leon to win the unofficial match.

During the Masters Eight tournament, Charizard was sent after Rillaboom had been unable to battle after being hit by a Flare Blitz from Alain's Charizard. Charizard easily defeated both Alain's Malamar and Mega Charizard X (finishing the latter off with a single Dragon Pulse despite being Mega Evolved), allowing Leon to advance to the next stage.

During the semi-finals, Charizard was sent out after Rillaboom fainted trying to fight Diantha's Gardevoir, who was immediately Gigantamaxed. Charizard took it out through a combination of G-Max Wildfire and Max Airstream, allowing Leon to advance to the finals.

Charizard was later sent out in Leon's match against Ash in the finals, where it clashed with Pikachu in its Gigantamax form, although unable to defeat him in the time frame. It was recalled but soon sent out again after his Cinderace fainted fighting Pikachu, where it matched his strength. However, Pikachu eventually prevailed and defeated Charizard, causing Leon to lose the finals. Charizard later recovered and was playfully headbutted by Pikachu when they both recovered.
