Appearance[]

Transclusion
This section, or a part of it, has been transcluded from Larry; any changes involving it should be made there instead.

Larry is a tall, thin, middle-aged man in business attire, wearing a black suit with a gray dress shirt underneath, and a blue cloud-print tie. There are two dark notches on each side of the suit lapels. He has very thick eyebrows, black hair with grey highlights, and square-shaped black eyes. In his role as an Elite Four member, he also wears black gloves with what appears to be a gray compass-like pattern engraved on them. He also carries a briefcase with him.

His preference for Normal-types is reflected in his very generic and square appearance, indicating that he is very formal in what he does, just as Normal types have nothing remarkable about them. Incidentally, his wispy, avian hairstyle and cloud-print tie and unusually piercing gaze also reflect/hint at his Flying-type coverage and how he does use them as a secondary preferred type. That and his briefcase implies that he travels a lot, something associated with traveling in airplanes. His hair and expression vaguely resembles a combination of Pidgeot's hair and Staraptor's face, further foreshadowing his flying-type affinity.

Personality[]

Larry is a rather haggard and indifferent individual, largely due to his tendency to overwork himself. However, he is also no-nonsense, emphasizing the importance of fairness in battles.

Biography[]

Larry first appeared in a non-speaking cameo flashback eating at Treasure Eatery when Friede mentioned about how he met Captain Pikachu.[1]

He would eventually make a proper appearance in the anime, alongside the rest of the Paldea Elite Four, where he watched Liko's victory against Ann.[2]

He later faced off against Kofu and Coral in a double battle. Despite Coral's Glalie using Self Destruct to knock out all the Pokémon on the battlefield, Larry was deemed the winner, since the team that uses a sacrificial move automatically loses the match, even if all Pokémon are knocked out. Coral tried to protest that it was a win, only for Larry to tell her off for her attitude.[3]

Larry had a meal at Mokichi and Nandi's restaurant, and gave the restaurant's new udon a high note.[4] Later, as the Medail Gym Leader, he battled Dot, easily defeating Tinkatink and the newly evolved Quaxwell with his Dudunsparce and Staraptor. However, he gave Dot his approval for her Terastalization test, noting that she had utilized Terastalization and was very observant, while having applied both of her Pokémon properly. He then bought the Treasure Eatery's signature rice balls for Dot, Liko, and Roy, although he lamented that he had to use his own cash rather than a check.[5]

Etymology[]

Larry is a fairly generic English given name, fitting with his status as a Normal-type expert. His name most likely comes from the word "salaryman". His name may also, given his status as a Flying-type expert, come vaguely from "lark," a type of bird, and "airy."

Correlating to the plant-themed naming of the franchise, his name might also be derived from the plant Laurel.
