Larry is a character appearing in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. A salaryman who works a day job for Paldea's Pokémon League, he is both the Gym Leader of the Medali Gym and an Elite Four member.

As a Gym Leader, Larry specializes in Normal types. As an Elite Four member, he specializes in Flying types.

Appearance

Larry is a tall man in business attire, wearing a black suit with a gray dress shirt underneath and a blue cloud-print tie. There are 2 dark notches on each side of the suit lapels. He has very thick eyebrows and square eyes. In his role as an Elite Four member, he also wears black gloves with what appears to be a gray compass-like pattern engraved on them. He also carries a suitcase with him.

His preference for Normal-types is reflected in his very generic and square appearance, indicating that he is very formal in what he does, just as Normal types have nothing remarkable about them. Incidentally, his bird-like hairstyle and cloud-print tie and unusually piercing gaze also reflect/hint at his Flying-type coverage and how he does use them as a secondary preferred type. That and his suitcase implies that he travels a lot, something associated with flying airplanes usually. His hair and expression vaguely resembles a combination of Pidgeot's hair and Staraptor's face, further foreshadowing his flying-type affinity.

Personality

Larry constantly works overtime as a salaryman and is often left completely drained of energy as a result. He sees himself as a normal person, thus he prefers Normal-types as like him, they have nothing special, though he does not disobey his boss' orders. Thus, Larry has fairly poor self-esteem, expressing surprise and confusion should the player pick him as their favorite Gym Leader.

Although mostly having a morose outlook on life, Larry does have a huge appetite, always frequenting the Treasure Eatery of Medali inside his Gym.

Etymology

Larry is a fairly generic English given name, fitting with his status as a Normal-type expert. It may also, given his status as a Flying-type expert, come from "lark," a type of bird, and "airy."

Correlating to the plant-themed naming of the franchise, his name might also be derived from the plant Laurel.

Trivia

• Larry being both a Normal- and Flying-type user is poetic; he uses Normal types due to feeling a connection to them that they are as unremarkable as him, while he uses Flying types to express the freedom and vacation he longs for, evidently with the Tropius in his team. Another reason might be that it is the most common pairing for the Normal type.
• Larry is the first character in the Pokémon series to have square eyes, as opposed to the round eyes that previous characters in the Pokémon series have had.
• Much like Koga, Larry is the only Gym Leader to take on an additional role as an Elite Four member. However, the former is promoted in a separate game.
• He is also the only Gym Leader in Paldea to use the Terastal phenomenon on two completely different Pokémon: Staraptor and Flamigo.
  • Katy also shares this similarity, although her Teddiursa evolves into Ursaring in her rematch.
  • Larry's also the only Gym Leader whose Terastallized Pokémon retains the same typing as with its normal form: Staraptor, who is already a Normal-type Pokémon.
• Much Like Bede, Larry changes his type specialization when moving up to a new rank. Larry's tie has clouds on it, which foreshadows his specialty as an Elite Four.
• Larry is the only Paldean Elite Four member not to watch the match between the player character and Nemona in the end of the Victory Road storyline; he leaves with his briefcase instead.
