Klawf (Japanese: ガケガニ, HepburnGakegani) is a Rock-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IX.

Biology[]

Physiology[]

Klawf is an orange crab-like Pokémon. Its has an orange back shell that has an uneven texture and a tan underside. Its face consists of two eyes with black stalks protruding from its shell, a grid-like mouth, round pink cheeks, and two bristle-like "nostrils". It sports eight legs, consisting of two claws and six walking legs, that are donned with grayish bristles on its joints.

Behavior[]

Klawf are both strong and dexterous Pokémon that sport a tough shell and strong claws. They will latch onto cliffsides in order to ambush prey, and are able to rotate their protruding eyes in order to see behind them, though doing this may make them dizzy due to the rush of blood going to their head. When attacking, they will use one claw to hold the opponent down and the other to break their guard, though they may lose their claws during battles as well. In certain parts of Paldea, these broken claws are considered valuable cooking ingredients, much like the claws of Clauncher and Crabrawler.

    Trivia[]

    Origin[]

Klawf may be based on the hairy stone crab, with the "stone" part of its name possibly contributing to its Rock typing. Its Japanese name suggests it may also be based on the horsehair crab.

    Etymology[]

Klawf may be a portmanteau of "claw" and "cliff".

Its Japanese name, Gakegani, may come from gake (cliff) and kegani (the Japanese name for the horsehair crab).
